Everyone who still thinks this is a 48. Look closely at the 1948 coin. The 4 and 8 are the same size. This is not a 1948 or an altered 48.

Thanks Iffy, I think there's only 4 of us on the internet that think so..LOL , But I gotta tell you I'm more confident now than ever...

Well apparently there are about 40 known in existence. It is definitely a tough call. It did look like it said 43 before you cleaned it. Gotta have it checked. Hope it is. Just picked up a equinox 600 as well. 16 silver coins in just 6 hunts plus. Awesome detector. ATB and HH👍👍

Thanks Depthspader, I'm hoping its worth a little something. We'll see. As for my nox. I have found more silver with it in half a year than any other full year of detecting so far...LOVE IT!!

I've had the nox for 10 days. Now I feel like I have to go over all the spots I've detected again. Awesome detector. ATB

Oh, Gary. This one could make you crazy. For your own sanity, I would go throw it in a ditch and restart that cycle. :-)

I'll have to take a look at all my 43s. 🤔

Barry Bark below mentioned putting the penny in olive oil. Is that what you should do if you pull a coin out that looked like this one? If brushing it was wrong, what should Gary have done?

Well I can answer part of that..DON'T BRUSH IT folks...LOL

Gary Reed Unfrequented World - I think you may have ended up in same situation no matter what you did. I think the last digit had already separated from coin an you were left with floating crud that had been over it. Was is destined to flake off anyway? When a person was assessing the condition- would they have had to toothpick it?

Would electrolysis have worked? I've heard that it strengthens the metal as the crud clears away.

I'm still seeing an 8 possibly a 5. I've pulled many that I thought were 43s too but they never end up being that way lol. The top of the three extends too far left, it should be flush with the middle point. The lower of the three seems low but not as low as the 9 which it should be. The trick is not to concentrate on one number, but the proportions of all of the numbers. If the price of grading isn't too stiff it's still worth sending it in. The risk vs reward level will certainly be acceptable.

Thanks Bill. The coin is slightly turned in this video. Afterwards I turned it to the right (which then drops the 3 down) ran a straight line below the now horizontal date..the 3 tail is now very close....

Sure looks like a 43. There seems to be a difference between the 43 & 48 on the back of the neck just above the collar. Good luck !

I’ve found Indians in worse shape and was able to view the date clearly for a few seconds just before it disappeared forever using chemicals. But I don’t think you would want to do that :)
