And the best thing is that he's not even trying, he's just feeling it and enjoying it. Not showing off his speed or skills. I must say I appreciate, like and enjoy listening to more than people who are showing off.

My grandfather is the drummer for Willie Nelson. My grandmother's favorite bass line was all of me, so he taught it to me. A couple months ago she had a stroke and is still on life support. When I realized it was the same version I burst into tears. Thank you for making this

Do you think that bass player was consciously aware of his facial expressions during his solo? I've heard of artists getting lost in the music, but he takes it to a different level. Watching Gonzalo Bergara avoid looking at him is equally priceless.

I recorded a quick video of myself today playing to send to someone, and realised after I'd sent it that I was making really stupid faces without realising. I look like I'm on coke or something lol. But for reals, not making "guitar face" for me is really difficult and requires effort xD

I've commented this video too many times, but I'm gonna do it one more time.
This video was the one that got me and my dad started playing gypsy swing. We both now own a gypsyjazz guitar (both petite bouche). It has been a journey to a totally different style of music than we were used to, coming from blues, rock, contemporary, evergreens and more general styles.
We've been taking lessons since, discovering the great ideas of Django, and understanding that gypsy jazz is more than playing fast appegios and doing unusual chords. Besides the extremely hard learned techniques and memorizing stuff, the feelings connected to this is like being a part of the pioneering this style was back in the days. Like being a pioneer yourself.
I'm thankful that it was the great Bergera, that was my first new inspiration, and owe Josh Turner a part of my soul because he made it reachable.
If you like this, go check out The New Hot Club Of America, in which Bergera plays a central role. On a sidenote, this style was invented by Django and Grapelli in the 40'ies in Hot Club of France.

Gypsy jazz is the coolest thing ever. Josh to you have any tips for someone who wants to learn how to play this style?

    • @jOntzohr
      @jOntzohr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

The easy way would be signing up for a gypsy jazz academy, e.g. Rosenberg academy or GyspyGuitarAcademy. You'll get lessons on just about every jazz song out there. But a subscription costs around 25 euros/month! The hard way would be just learning some gyspy jazz standards like this one and e.g. Minor Swing by googling or looking them up on youtube!

    • @moonlapse_vertigo
      @moonlapse_vertigo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Learn chord embellishments such as major and minor 6th chords (the gypsy chord) and major, minor and dominant 7th chords, as well as 6/9 chords, and etc.
Learn the La Pompe rhythm, as it is essential to the gypsy sound
Listen to and learn jazz standards to pick up on the nuances of each different version - no two versions are the same, and this is what gives jazz it's sense of individuality
Learn the history of the genre
Brush up on music theory - in jazz, you must know what you are doing
Learn jazz licks from your favorite artists. Doing so develops your 'jazz vocabulary'
Listen to different types of music, as this will make you a better musician, regardless of the genre you play.
Have someone to jam and discuss music with. This is an overlooked, but invaluable aspect to your musical journey, more than you realize. Having someone to healthily compete with and hold you accountable for your goals, and vice versa, makes for a productive music realtionship

Gonzalo, Clipper and Josh - We ALL 'felt the fun' in this! All three of you played (and sang) to a fantastic standard. This has to be one of absolute classics in the huge Josh Turner website collection of outstanding music videos. Many thanks to all three of you. The hilarious inter-personal dynamic around Clipper the bass player's 'concentration face-pulls' and the sterling attempts at self-control made by the other two while trying to focus on playing to the highest standard and pace were a wonderful bonus. It just adds personality and another dimension to the fun of this superb musical performance. Congratulations to all!

I grew up hearing all kind of stuff from the French Quarter cause my mom was from the south. My Dad used to sing cowboy songs. As a result I am writing cowboy swing, bluegrass, blues, R&B, folk, latin, jazz, & rock. Just came back from a recording session in North Carolina. I’ve been a big fan of Gonzalo since stumbling upon a concert of his at Djangofest at the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley, CA, while visiting the area on vacation back in 2010. After that concert, I looped his albums continuously in my car. He is a genius of Gypsy jazz guitar. This trio works so well with Josh doing a masterful job on vocals and rhythm guitar, and the awesome and expressive(!) bass player who brings a smile to my face.

Why not take all of me
    Can’t you see
    I’m no good without you
    Take my lips
    I want to lose them
    Take my arms
    I’ll never use them
    Your goodbye
Left me with eyes that cry
    How can I
    Go along without you
    You took the part
    That once was my heart
    So why not
    Take all of me
    All of me
Why not take all of me

    Beautifully executed Gentlemen.
It's great that you're keeping music like this alive by exposing it to a younger audience.
Great music is great forever. It may not be the "popular music of the day" any longer, but the greatness of the music, writers, and the performers doesn't diminish with age.
For me music is timeless. I listen to music from every era.
So far today, I've listened to Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, Judy Garland's rendition of Rockabye Your Baby, Mama Said and Tonight's the night by The Shirelles, The Beatles Yes it is, In the Wee Small Hours and I have dreamed by Sinatra, Radio Radio by Elvis Costello, Close to the edge by Yes, The Bands classic It makes no difference, Joni Mitchell's Big yellow taxi, Motorheads The Ace of spades, Slip it in and Black Coffee by Henry Rollins and Black Flag, just to name a few.
In the end, Good Music is Good Music, so great job keeping this great music alive.

Glad I played this. Senor Bergara is always fantastic and Mr. Anderson's solo was a treat. Good job on accompaniment and vocals by Mr. Turner as well. This was recorded very near to me. Wish I had realized that Senor Bergara was going to be participating in this festival. I suppose I should be paying more attention to local events.
