- When Manchester United signed Raphael Varane there was a lot of excitement. But the 4 time Champions League winner has failed to live up to expectations and a loss of physicality combined with lots of injuries has seen Varane become a shadow of the world cup winner. Even with his drop off, Varane is still one of Manchester United’s best defenders in and around the box but having missed more than a Premier League season’s worth of matches in his Old Trafford career, the Frenchman simply cannot be relied upon. So here’s 3 players Man Utd could target to replace Varane in the long term.

United should really consider Max Kilman. He's strong and solid and also, his passing range is phenomenal
Surprised more big clubs aren't looking at Kilman. Screams of a move to someone like Aston Villa or Newcastle and 6 months later people lose their mind over how well he's stepped up.

I wrote something similar in ultrasfc premium video on him in my other account months ago. Kilman is a captain he would fit United. I’d prefer him over Branthwaite or Guehi as a English born talent.

I can see United signing two centre backs in the next 2 windows. a right footer and a left footer. A right footer to start alongside of Martinez and a left footer to cover Martinez. Jean Clair-Todibo is the ideal player to put next to Lisandro Martinez. I can see them working extremely well together. My back up left centre back would be Alan Matturro off Genoa. Matturro is big, physical and technically really sound. He still has alot to learn so backing up Martinez would be ideal. Jean Clair-Todibo and Alan Matturro won't cost an arm and a leg and will give United fantastic depth
Or just have Shaw as the backup LCB. Sign Reguillon permanent, have him & Malacia as LB's.
@michael43567 I'm not against that but united need to be getting younger In the back 4. I also think it is important for united to add additional physicality to the team in the back 4 and midfield.
@@dublin7 Todibo & Martinez are both 25 & under. Luke Shaw & Lindelof are under 30, Maguire is 30. I don't think age at CB is a major concern.
@michael43567 I don't think lindelof and varane are safe in terms of there position at united, they can definitely improve and with martinez injury history recently having two new cbs would be a massive benefit
United should sell maguire and varane and get todibo and de ligt who is not prefered by tuchel although he is better defender than both upamecano and kim jae so best chance for united to get him

for me Todibo or Guehi , Guirassy up front and either Amadou Onana or Fofana. But Varane , Case , Sancho and Martial all need to be sold. Looks like united are swapping Donyell Malen for Sancho, talks ongoing today.
Scalvini is the best option on paper but also the most expensive , so for me Todibo is the most realistic for the obvious reasons (Nice ownership).
Would love to see Guirassy get a break but he's on a very hot streak right now. Although £17m for a Guirassy to take Martial's spot who COULD continue this form would be good business

Antonio Silva is probably the outstanding young centre back right now (Scalvini is realistically more of a DM or a wide centre back in a 3) but Silva's 100m release clause is a lot of money for a very young defender. I would be very happy with Todibo for 30m-40m

We're poor at defending set pieces. Whoever partners Martinez needs to be good in the air, as well as on the ball.
I think Scalvini is my preferred replacement. He is versatile in that we can see him cover the CDM position as well. I think he can develop into a top tier defender. And if we can get Bastoni as well, although I know that is a reach, than we will be settled for years to come. These signings are dependent on the selling of Maguire and Varane. Sell to buy is how we attack this problem in the long run...

Varane is easily our best CB otherwise when available.

It's more likely they come in the summer.
Less transfers in January for United means that the players don't have to start trying to get used to the playstyle of another set of signings. The current routines can be strengthened instead. New signings can come in the summer and pre season can be used to establish routines with new players.

Varane was one of the best CB of his generation but he's not a CB for the top 4 league in Europe anymore
Definitely can't play in a modern possession based team or a team that presses high. He could have a decent career in Serie A or at the right club in Ligue 1
@StatmanDave to be fair varane was far more competent in a sytem without direct virtical player positioning.
His ability to play out from the back was far better with a single pivot midfielder. The difference between games with casemeiro and kroos playing deeper and just casemeiro holding is night and day. Still he has never and will never be an attacking minded cb. Its a shame hes been injured the stability a player like that offers in a poorly performing team is invaluable.
I was hoping you'd mention Kossounou, looks like he could be a real gem too! Plus anyone coming from Leverkusen would bring a proper confidence and forward thinking mindset with them.

I still dont see why we always seem to force a system that starts as a 4231.
It hasnt suited the personel we have for a long time and certainly doesnt now.
Id like to know why we dont switch to a 2008 style barca system based on a 433 with a holding pivot cdm. I feel the two holding mid start just leads to more complications than necesary and results in both a weaker offensive and defensive setup.
Also why not try maguire out as a holding mid (if first choice cb are fit). For all his attributes he kinda is like a better eric dier. I do see that again in our current two holding mid system he may be too easy to bypass at times but thats not like its any different to casimero or amrabat. Imo thats more of a tactical failing, from not playing around the strengths of certain players.
Imo our biggest overall issue that other teams always take advantage of is the massive disconect in our midfield. We are so easy to play through and we dont seem to gain anywhere near an equivalent amount of offensive boost to warrent our tactical approach.
So why do we stick with the 4231? It seems crazy to me
Nice ain’t selling Todibo in January when they have a chance on fighting for title. This is more of a summer signing.
Then we should go for DeLigt, on a loan to buy option in January.

i personally would not sell varane in jan but maguire and lindelof yes and bring todibo and tapsoba in either way they will need to settle in any cb coming in will need to settle in having varane martinez and todibo and tapsoba would be an upgrade
in my opinion we need 2 new signings at center back
our preferred defense is : shaw, licha, varane and wan bissaka/dalot
and the backups are : malacia/reguilon, maguire, lindelof and bissaka/dalot (depends game to game)
keeping in mind that maguire's form is uncertain and varane is losing his legs while evans is 35 and lindelof is not that good which leaves us with licha who is a good CB but carrying this defense mostly alone or with shaw, the other choice is using shaw as CB but again he is very injury prone
we should be signing scalvini and todibo, scalvini has a huge potential to be world class and he gives more depth by playing in a double pivot and as a fullback while todibo's ogc nice conceded the least amount of goals last season and currently they have conceded like 5 or 6 goals in ligue1 till now
using todibo as a partner to lisandro while keeping scalvini to groom him would be better
United need a centre-back who is aggressive, good under pressure with the ball and quick. Also I think United need a right-back. I would love Frimpong or Dumfries. And they need a striker. Taremi from Porto, Wissam Ben Yedder from Monaco or the 2 from Napoli Raspadori and Simone. Do they need a midfielder? I would say no as they have Mainoo, Hannibal, McTominay, Amrabat, Mount, Bruno and Gore. Players to sell Varane, Sancho, Casemiro, Eriksen and Martial. £90-£100million for that lot.
I said during the course of last season that we should sign Antonio Silva from Benfica. A very impressive young CB. He would be the first one I would sign.

Utd need a rcb in January who is strong, fast, athletic, good at aerial duels & more importantly ready to play for Utd right away. That's why all the young cbs Jarrad Branthwaite, Diomande, Antonio Silva or that Italian dude can wait until the summer.
Sell Lindelof or Varane and imo, bring Todibo or Tapsoba or Premier League experienced Konsa or Guehi. Ofc Todibo is the most obvious with Nice & Sir Jim. By the way, let Nice have Martial. He will be happy to be back to France 👌

How about Sule? Not really starting at Dortmund right now. Experienced but still has a good 3 years in him. Might be an option for a decent price even this winter. Always felt he was under appreciated because he looks kind of weird at times.

Our main problem is scoring. We are not taking chances. 1.2 goals a game is too low. Antony Sancho zero goals. Rashford Garnacho 2 goals. Is a problem. Hojlund zero goals in PL. We need at least 2 new strikers. Toney Barbosa not what we need. Mbappe unlikely. Muller too old. We should be lookinh into Osimhen or otherwise NicoWilliams soon on free. Maybe even Benzema on loan 6 months. Bardghji amazing talent.

The gap between the PL and other leagues has gotten so big, MOST high potential young players who look amazing in other leagues (because there are just too many shit teams to inflate their overall stats) tend to struggle in PL. It's really hard to trust unless they are well and truly established as good players.

Silva, Diomande, Scalvini, Yoro (and send on loan) for sure for that RCB. UTD will miss out on Silva, Diomande and Inacio if they don't move for them in Jan or early Summer.
Todibo is getting highly rated but wasn't his attitude pretty bad when he was at Barcelona. Attitude seems to be almost more important at United at the moment.

Maguire Lindelof needed replacement ever since Ole bought Maguire and cost us every single cup. 2020 should have been DeLigt Alaba there. Possibly Kimmich as well added in defence or mid. Varane was good, I think his drop of form is due TenHag poor management, same as for Rashford Bruno etc. With Ole we could have had Belingham in mid as well, Haaland in front. This team would've been clinical and pushing for title.

According to reports Varane is up for sale & to be honest Man Utd should sell him whilst they can get some value for him. Realistically they won't be winning the league or Champions League in the remainder of Varane's career so they should start building a squad that has a chance to do that.
