@brunobryant4846 You're right Bruno, the Maids unlocked our hearts from day 1. Kanami said the thick fog we've had in London for the last 2 days still isn't as thick as the fog they get in Japan. Again, this reminds me of the Pre-Grunge Seattle music scene. I remember some friends who traveled in CA, OR, and WA a lot hitting lots of small clubs and other venues, and coming back to St. Louis with literally dozens of cassettes of music. Which is how I found Letters to Cleo, Headpins, and a bunch of other bands I cannot remember at the moment. This is back before bands and groups could burn their own CD's, they would record a master cassette, then use several dual tape decks to high speed dub other tapes, with photocopied or mimeographed artwork that was hand drawn. Back when a 4 track recorder was "STATE OF THE ART" for home recording. I had a few other friends who chipped in together to buy a 4 track recorder, then they made their money back renting time out in their basement "Studio". The Ladies Pre-"JBI" songs give me that feel of that sound. Once JBI hit however, their sound made such a change, and progression, that I found myself being more drawn to it. Reminding me of early Priest, Slade, Thin Lizzy and even AC/DC. The nostalgia factor of their music is one thing I hope they never move away from. I am still hoping they get whatever issue they have with MIJ figured out and add it to their YT channel. And Miku is actually considered to be an accomplished poet with her lyrics. Let me dig into my files about her 4 kanji writing. This is from a comment section discussion I had earlier this year I think. @napodyna6981 11 minutes ago @greylocke100 I think Kobato explained her use of four-character idioms, Japanese idioms made with four kanji characters. Many of them are unique to Japan but are also often derived from the classical literature of ancient China. They contain wisdom or life lessons where may reference old myths or folklore, or Buddhist ideas, or anything in the culture. In Japanese it is something like an abbreviation, the meaning can't necessarily be derived from their component words, (not even in Chinese). It's not an appropriate analogy, but it might feel like abbreviations for Latin epigrams. @greylocke100 Sure, I'm glad if it helped you. BTW, there are also mere idioms, not wisdom or life lessons. Maximum the Hormone's "予襲復讐 [Yoshū Fukushū]", which deals with bullying at school, is coined by them, literally "Preemptive attack Revenge", where it could be read as "Preemptive attack for revenge". "Yoshū Fukushū", however, is a four-character idiom that usually spells "予習復習", which simply means "Prepare and review". The titles of Unseen World discs are simply translated as "Roots" for 1 and "Progress" for 2, respectively. However, the former [原点回帰/Geten Kaiki] is a four-character idiom meaning "Return to basics [the point of origin]", while the latter [現点進化/Genten Shinka] is a word coined by Kobato that is a variant of the former and may means something like "Evolution at the present point". @otobokegaijin6218 3 minutes ago (edited) Regarding the Japanese four-character expressions, they're in the "Shambles" lyrics too. 渾然一体 meaning disparate elements blended into a harmonious unity. Also 笑止千万, meaning something like "so funny can't stop laughing" but often in irony or pathos or bathos. The word "shambles" is a rendering of 混沌 (usually translated as "chaos"), an alternative form of that word is 渾沌, and 渾 is the first character of 渾然一体. In Chinese literature 混沌 appears as the name of a demigod, and demigods (if not that particular one) feature in "Kengan Ashura". These literary connections are not coincidences. You'll often find them in Miku's lyrics. There are a few other instances of this sort of word-play in the "Shambles" lyrics. For example, there's a proverb from Chinese/Japanese literature that's not literally translated but means something like "What seems to be good can turn out to be bad, what seems bad can turn out to be good, sometimes the end of things isn't obvious at first." The proverb ends with the kanji character for "horse" 馬, and that character is in the full name of the protagonist Ashura in the anime. The "fierce tiger" in the lyrics is a direct reference to Saiki's favorite baseball team Hanshin Tigers and also to the Two Tigers of the anime.
The thing is, the people who worked with B-M and write music for them during the early days are veteran musicians with years of experience. So they notice the girls raw talent right away, and that's why their first songs are so good for a band that had never played together before (Kanami and Akane did some stuff together before B-M but nothing close to an "actual rock band's album record") Those people played a big role in Band-Maid's inception and growth, and the maids themselves always have grateful and praise words for them. Hell, without Kentaro Akutsu and 'Thrill' the band will probably never have made it and they would have been disbanded by the label years ago Anyway, enough ramblin (lol). It's such a blast to watching you diving into the older Band-Maid stuff!, Keep up the good work and happy new year NittPicc! ぽ
My understanding is that they always had some creative input, but they weren’t the principal writers. I don’t love their older stuff, but it’s cool to see how they came up together and basically turned into a super group.
The girls had some leeway with the arrangements, as they themselves have said in some interviews. I guess that's why they still have an excellent relationship with the musicians who composed those songs (Masahiko Fukui, composer of half of this album has an interesting interview in the Score Book of Unseen World) and why they quickly learned what kind of music they wanted to play. You have to understand that none of them had any previous experience with hard rock and that they practically started from a blank canvas.
we know that the band had some say in the song writing process. they did not just play things that were given to them. this was during the time when kanami was writing music and was still getting rejected by the company. this was also during the period when miku was still just starting out on guitar so kanami had to do all of the heavy lifting.
Hola Princess NittPicc!! I'm pretty sure even in the early days MISA, Akane and Kanami were putting their flavour into the music. One of the comments by one of the three was "lets try and not get fired". All three of them had already been around the music scene and especially these three had worked on different projects. The newbies where Saiki and to a lesser degree Miku who had only Little Cumin as a show business background. MISA turned up to her first audition from a drinking session.
I love their old stuff from the early albums. Yes, since they took over all the writing they've gone to another level, but it's just a different thing. They already had "that" sound, even with these simple songs.
I'm convinced that everyone involved in early Band-Maid figured it would be a 2 year project that would be a stepping stone to other things. The members, the management, etc... But, no one was mailing it in. The writers, the recording and mixing and of course the performers are taking it seriously. Maybe that's how the Japanese recording industry works, I dunno. Thanks for the reaction!
Princess NittPicc, Happy Holidays from a fellow cook! "Key" is one of Band-Maid's lesser-known songs, but it's rock groove will implant itself into your brain and stay there a long, long, long time. It's a great song for yes, background music when you're doing something other than gaming. Baking for instance.
From Japan: Information not related to BAND-MAID's music Miku, Saiki, and Misa are good at cooking. Their cooking scenes are shown in the video. Saiki's hamburger steak is the best, Miku brings food to the members, Misa makes snacks to go with alcohol at home... Kanami seems to be making sweets. The millefeuille hotpot that Miku introduced on Prime Video during the pandemic has become my specialty dish.
This nice simplistic rock song was written by Kentaro Akutsu (the composer of Thrill, Forward, Smile, and more). Maids respectfully call him Akutsu-sensei.
What @rocotocloc stated is true. Although the Labels assign producers that have the final say they do a lot of takes on each part and decide what they want to keep and what they don't. So each player has a basic track the studio pros put out but they still are going to want each player to do something different in each take. That is where the ladies had an opportunity to improvise.
Veruca Salt comes rather near, but listen to Pat Travers' "Makes no Difference" and the fast guitar run following the riff. The bridge with the guitar solo has a lot of The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult.
From the start, MISA was tearing it up more than these early songs would normally call for. I think she inspired the others to push their limits which created what we so luckily get from Band-Maid today. 🤘🤘🎸🎀Thx, NittPicc!
Yep i know exactly what you're saying, NittPicc, you'll put B-M on in the background & they won't distract you from making a cake mix in your KitchenAid.🤣
I really enjoyed this first album when I went through it. No, it's not on the level of later Band-Maid, but it's fun and interesting and makes me smile contentedly. I absolutely love that that they didn't do what some bands do, which is pack their best work into the first album and then fade away. Band-Maid is still growing and still getting better.
PLEASE, PLEASE Band-Maid... Put "Key" into your live setlist as part of a three song throwback in your 2025 concerts! And Kanami, maybe launch into a nice, long, sweet solo to top it all off. Just wishin'... ;-) What should the other two songs be?
Maid in Japan is a really good album, and "Key" is a great song. The music was simply not progressive nor hard rock enough for the Maids. Hence their second album, New Beginning. "Thrill" is track 1 on New Beginning, and the rest is now history. Edit: Sometimes, simple is best. If everything is complicated all of the time, it's hard to just let your hair down and rock out. Band-Maid's early music is just that - complex enough to know they are really great musicians, but "simple" enough to totally rock out! 🤘🤘💕💕

James Bondy? You need to hear their first instrumental "Go Nuts." But very difficult to find. Written for a friend of Kanami for a radio program. Only played live in Japan a few times.
First of all, PinD makes it very hard to concentrate on the music with his really fun videos Po! But I really love this album. Yes, this is their first album and they had little if any input, but as NittPicc said, they nailed it. We can tell right out of gate that these ladies had some magic going on. My personal favorites from this album are Be Okay, Bye My Tears, Forward and the last one, Summer Drive which kinda sounds like a Cluppo song even before we got to meet her! Thank you NittPicc-chan for another great and fun reaction Po!
My favorite song on MIJ, definitely the heaviest track of the album. And imo, you can already hear some parts where Band-Maid was going to go in it. But I think your take on "they only were given simple songs and could have played so much more complex" isn't 100% correct. You have to consider they, as musicians, were also on their level of 11 years ago back then. I could imagine they also grew over the years in their craft alongside with the albums.
Chemical Reaction was streamed twice. The first was the 5/10/21 Day of Maid stream where it made its debut. More recently it was done at the Medium in Summer concert of 8/30/24 which was streamed to the fan club for a few days in Sept. 2024 because the concert happened at the time of a typhoon in Japan and some ticket holders weren't able to get there. It was released in 4 parts to the fan club and called a "rough cut" So I expect the concert will be out sometime as an extra on a special edition or as a stand alone video release since it was videoed by them.
This album would be like Level 1 in an RPG. Their Battledress is still very simple and unoriginal, lol. That's why I am impressed by their evolution from this point to the present. I like the lyrics of this song, "Imperfection is the key to life,". いつも素晴らしいリアクションをありがとう。お忙しいと思いますが、これからも楽しみにしています😊

I think you are have a small misunderstanding in these early album reactions: Sure the music was composed by Kentarō Akutsu, but the arrangement was done with the band (BAND-MAID is always credited in the arrangement in every song of this album). The composition part is the one that doesn't have the band involved here, and a composition for a rock song consists generally of the riff, the chord progression, bass line, melody, bridge and structure, the rest is generally done in the arrangement part like the bass runs and guitar counter melodies, drum rolls, transitions, and solos, so Kanami most likely did all of those which why you'll have a sense of consistency in these earlier songs with Band-Maid usual style despithe the different style of compositions and everything else. Also I'm pretty sure the guitar solos are in the big part made by Kanami herself as it is hard to have someone compose a guitar solo for another since it all depends on skills, the musical vocabulary of the player, and muscle memory. Kanami most likely was given the chord progression of the bridge, how many bars to play and maybe a an outlined melody and she soloed over it using whatever playing style she developed.
As I recall Kobato more recently commented the early-days stuff to the effect that they always had creative input in the sense that they not only arranged the songs, but also asked the song-writers for changes - which back then was considered a bit... presumptuous, perhaps... by a new band of people that young. They did it regardless. And then, as Kobato put it, MISA was always a genius on the bass, from the very beginning. However it was a little different for Kanami - so while Kanami has always had very clear ideas in her head what guitar-tone she wanted, how it was all supposed to sound, in the early days it was not always self-evident she could get it our of the instrument. So apparently. lot of time went into Kanami searching about for ways to produce for that tone of her inner guitar. She might be a genius, but she's the kind that puts in the work too, or downright grind, to get things right.
Well put, thanks. Exactly, they did point out in several interviews that they were already adding parts of their imaginations into the basic composition they got. There is a lot of Band-Maid in it already.
The original “Maid In Japan” album was released with 8 songs, which finished with “FORWARD”. And, 3 songs (“Love, Passion, Matador”, “Thrill”and “Summer Dive”) were on BAND-MAID’s debut single, where “Love, Passion, Matador” was the A-side and “Thrill” was the B-side. As “Thrill” was a great success for them and got included in their next album “New Beginning”, the two remaining songs (“Love, Passion, Matador” and “Summer Dive”) was added as bonus to the re-release/re-issued version of “Maid In Japan” album.
They always choose which songs to play, and they arranged them themselves as they saw fit. They had a lot of leeway. They choose which song to do as their first music video.
Remember, be gentle ... our MAIDs and the label were still finding their way. This album was very much a hodge-podge of stuff to see what worked. Ironically BAND MAID found a way to make nearly all of it work ;) . Kitchen-Aid ... SQUEAK!
That's funny, I was just about to tell her not to bother walking on eggshells because we know it was early days and much simpler songs. She must be using the precisely perfect amount of tact then.
Please try "Kimono Mom" for simple easy to learn Japanese cooking. A very fun show as she has a really cute daughter. Shows start when Su Chan is about 2 years old up to now at about 5 maybe? If you enjoy cooking I believe you will be as stunned by the food scene in Japan as you are with the music scene.Chicken or Pork Katsu is super easy for a good home cook. Same with Japanese Curry. Karaage is Japanese fried chicken. Gyoza is not complicated at all. I am very confident you can do better than most restaurants in America 1rst try after watching Kimono Mom. Maid in Japan may not be my sound, but I'd still rank it higher than Yacht Rock. That said, I think it's a good album. There are some situational songs that I can really like when the moments is right.
I think you bring a very American, “individualistic” mindset to your imagining of BAND-MAID’s process for creating this song. I’m sure there is no, “Nah, I’m gonna do what I want,” in a room full of Japanese people.
And I think you are oversimplifying Japanese culture. Standing up for and arguing for your position is expected. It stops when the decision maker decides on a course of action. Then everyone is suppose to be 100% with that decision.

Regarding the Japanese four-character expressions, they're in the "Shambles" lyrics too. 渾然一体 meaning disparate elements blended into a harmonious unity. The word "shambles" is a rendering of 混沌 (usually translated as "chaos"), an alternative form of that word is 渾沌, and 渾 is the first character of 渾然一体.
MISA always marches to a different bassist
This album would be like Level 1 in an RPG. Their Battledress is still very simple and unoriginal, lol.
That's why I am impressed by their evolution from this point to the present.
I like the lyrics of this song, "Imperfection is the key to life,".
いつも素晴らしいリアクションをありがとう。お忙しいと思いますが、これからも楽しみにしています😊
1:36 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG MISA😏
7:04 I forgot my chorus part, teehee😁
7:21 If I knew them back then, I would bring my guitar to be signed...wait a minute, I didn't have a guitar😅
7:50 I've never seen wide-eyed and surprised MISA except in this picture.
9:26 A very tricky photo🙄
11:13 Miku was dreaming of owning her horse, Rainbow Kruppo, and winning a big race someday.
11:24 Just another windy cold day at the beach!😏
You make me laugh every time :) . Happy New Year man!

I think you are have a small misunderstanding in these early album reactions:
Sure the music was composed by Kentarō Akutsu, but the arrangement was done with the band (BAND-MAID is always credited in the arrangement in every song of this album).
How did "pigeon" get into Akutsu-san's Thrill lyrics? Had to be some back and forth.
😍🤘
Have a Happy New Year NittPicc!!! Looking forward to 2025 and Band-Maid Sunday's with NittPicc. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
5 organic matter making 1 hell of a cacophony🥴😵!!
You do know that a cacophony is unpleasant sounds. Band-Maid is anything but unpleasant.
In all favour 2 the rhythm sec.,I sincerely wish u were right.@@ericifune5543
The emojis had seen better dys There's ur cacophony.. @@ericifune5543
Happy Holidays!
🤘🤘🤘
I would love to see you react to "Missioned Souls" cover Bestie by Band Maid. They are a family band and they are amazing!!
First part of the song with filter is sung by Miku, not by Saiki 😊
Not a request to make a show about it, just thought you might like her a lot.
Hola 👋
Oooo, what color KitchenAid? My wife has a hot pink, but she wants forest green...tbh, she wants all the colors...😂
The place I live has an old 1950s bathtub that colour. It's hideous.. looks good on a Kitchen-Aid tho. 🙂
It doesn't matter to me cos i can't see the colours anyway, but don't get your wife a white one, they look awful if they get chipped :)
@@80mtn My reply has gone, i said white ones look awful if they get chipped. It was crucial info.😔
