Great viddy, helped a lot! ATTENTION! Before removing the linkage/motor assembly from the car, pay VERY close attention (take a picture!) to the exact alignment of the short arm that connects the linkage to the motor/reduction gear output shaft! Mine was not keyed and could be reassembled at ANY angle, so after it was all reinstalled, the wipers worked, but parked at an odd angle when shut off, about halfway up the windshield! I had to alter the position of that link a few times and watch how the linkage arms moved before I got it all coordinated. I hope this prevents anyone else having to endure the hassle of removing and reinstalling it a few times like I did! XD (BTW I did this on a '99 Jetta, utterly similar.)

Very straightforward job apart from getting that plastic scuttle to re-fit tight to the windscreen. Eventually got it in with loads of soapy water..

Be careful! There are 2 types of front wiper motor for the Mk 4 Bora/Golf - an older one with a *5 pin* connector(up to 2001 apparently), and a newer one with *4 pin* connector(2001 onwards apparently). Some online shops have a lovely looking search facility to check which fits your car *but* I found these very hit and miss - i.e. some said the 5 pin fit my car(wrong!) and others rightly saying it didn't. As if things weren't difficult enough without the sellers deceiving you!?!

Thanks. Very helpful. ONn my 2012 Jetta TDI:
    1. There were 2 Torx head bolts (T30) holding the wiper arms, 1 10mm.and
    2. The plastic cowling had zero fasteners! Held in place by brackets and the foam/rubber gasket.
I replaced motor; maybe should replace motor and linkage or transmission. We'll see.
Do hook up new motor electrical and run it once twice to reset to rest position. I needed One tiny re-adjustment of wiper arm position to make perfect.
I am retired lawyer and I did it!
    Cheers.

Thanks for a really useful guide. I recommend anyone to try this, requires very little experience and few tools other that 10mm, 13mm sockets, ratchet, phillips, etc. If you're very careful and take your time you won't break anything and save yourself almost £300 at VW rates. The hardest part for me was dismantling my linkage arms and swapping out the motor. You need tp pry it all apart with a fair bit of force. Be careful and use a long screwdriver. Sustained force was the most effective way of doing it. I had to do it all twice because the first time I installed it the wipers were going clockwise instead of anti-clockwise! Some head-scratching and a second remove, dis-assembly and re-assembly sorted it out. Basically, before reassembling the mechanism again just take the motor and reconnect it to the plug. Put your key in the ignition and put the wipers on. Allow them to do a full cycle and come to a rest. This resets the position of the motor to park the wipers at rest. Now disconnect the motor and reassemble the linkage and bracket. What you do here is very important: line up the two linkage arms as well as the motor spindle arm so that they are all in one line, parallel to the bracket. Crucially the motor spindle arm needs to be pointing in the direction AWAY from the motor, not doubled back over the motor in the opposite direction. I found that this allowed my wipers to sweep in the right direction once fitted. Hope that help, and thanks again for a very helpful vid :)
