  • The story of Hagar is found in the Book of Genesis (chapters 16 and 21). Hagar was an Egyptian servant of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. When Sarah could not conceive a child, she gave Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate to bear a child. Hagar became pregnant and gave birth to Ishmael, but her relationship with Sarah became strained due to jealousy and tension.
After a conflict, Sarah mistreated Hagar, prompting her to flee into the wilderness. There, an angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar, promising that her son would become the father of a great nation. Hagar returned and gave birth to Ishmael under God’s protection.
