...and the daughter of Ganjiro Nakamura, a great actor who starred in the Ozu classic Floating Weeds and appeared in over 70 films.

That's a wooden sword and not a real one. It will not kill people unless you really hit hard😁
He's going out of his way to just disarm them. Obviously, he could kill them with his skill level, wooden sword or not. I have to go along with you on the "stupid hero" description. I could go along with him on "doing the right thing" right up until he agreed to pay the Yakuza boss for medical costs. That was taking a good thing way too far.
