I have played. I have read the rules. I have watched countless videos trying to understand this game. I have no idea why shoe, car, radish and corn makes sense but I totally get it now! This is amazing. Thanks for ending my confusion. Very nicely explained!
I have gone through 4 classes and the lightbulb has not went on with regards to scoring. No one was saying that you can’t score when you’re not serving. Thank you! Super clear.
Very clear explanation and I'm so grateful to not hear background music competing with your voice for our attention! Let's us focus on what your saying! Thank you!!
great explanation, very clear and concise. I especially liked that you had a shoe playing with a truck. Pickleball is an inclusive sport and all pickleball players of all skill levels should look for opportunities to play with shoes. Thanks again for another well done and informative video
This is really helpful. My wife is a beginning player and is struggling to understand scoring. It's like teaching your wife to drive! This video will be a great help to us.
excellent video, you made the rules and scoring much clearer to me! Love the creativity with the little objects playing.. Your explanations were patiently done!
Love that you filmed the players in slo-mo. Somehow that slowed my brain down enough that I could absorb what you were teaching. That said, scoring in pickleball is weird. 😅
Awesome video, hitting a pickleball keychain over a sharpie between a shoe and a piece of corn is next level smart. Can you clarify the whole right/left serve and even/odd score? Or is that just for singles. Thx.
Explanations are so clear. As a beginner to play pickleball, but have no idea how to count scores... I know now how to score and how to switch the server position... Thank you so much!
People act like the 0-0-2 is so complicated that you can't explain it to beginners. I don't think it's that hard. The first team to serve gets the first chance to score points. It would be an even bigger advantage if both players got a chance to serve before the other team got one chance, so to balance things out, the first team to serve only gets one server. That's why they start out as the second server.
@@raycortopassi4030 only the serving team can score. Having the opportunity to score confers an advantage to the first team to serve in the game. Are you following so far?
@@raycortopassi4030 I explanation above was about the rationale for the 0-0-2. In other words, why the game is started with 0-0-2. But more basic than that, I hope you at least understand what the numbers represent...? 0-0 is the score. The third number is about the server, and lets both teams know when the service changes side. Do you understand that much?
Good video, thank you. I'm understanding the scoring better, and I understand the server's number for the first 2 sideouts. What I'm not understanding is does the server's number change throughout the game, or is it always the same number they begin with?
I'm a tennis player learning PB and one thing about doubles team player rotation was vague. In tennis doubles, the receiving team never alternates left and right courts. For example, if you started receiving in the left (Ad) court, you always receive serve in the Ad court throughout the set and match. However, in PB, the court side one receives on alternates L/R based on their positions when last serving but sided out? For example, if my first receive ever in the game was left court, but I served last from right side with side out, the next time I receive is from right court? Thanks
I thought if your score was even, you starting server should be on the right and if your score is odd your starting server should be on the left. When you are covering the real scenario, you have it backwards. PLEASE clarify ..
Very clear on score keeping, Any tricks for those of us "of a certain age" who know how to keep score but continually forget it (particularly after a long rally)..sometimes all four players!
The first four minutes was a toss salad of confusion. Luckily I skipped most of it and viewed the remainder which was very clear on how the scoring is kept. Thanks
I've watched nearly a dozen videos before this trying to get the stupid scoring system -- and it's rather confusing, but you made it very clear. My only question you didn't address is, when playing singles, do you still say the 3rd number? Do you get a second serve when playing singles?
That was a long video for Mark and understandably so. I like Mark for his clarity and brevity. I have yet to see a scoring video that mentions that the receiving team must each receive serves on the side where they found themselves at the side out. So, if I (3.5 on a rare good day) ever partner with Tyson McGuffin, we won't be able to let Tyson take all the serves.
Helpful info on scoring. Question: when you are in the middle of a match, and you are not sure of the score, it seems to me that players figure it out by who was the very first server - how does this work?? Thanks!
Good question. We should make a video on it. The short answer is: if your score is even, a team’s first server will be serving/returning from the right side of the court. if a teams score is is odd, the second server will be playing from the right side.
I just started playing and the people that were teaching just confused me more with serving and scoring. Personally I think they were making things up. Anyway thank you for your video ( I’ve watch half a dozen of them before yours) I clearly know how the serving works now. The hard part now is trying to convince the people who are teaching me that they are wrong lol.
Keeping score comes easy for some, but not for others, because they are focusing on getting that ball back across the net & know someone else will keep up with it!
Where else can you get your Pickleball with “cob of corn, radish, truck and shoe”? You with me so far? You also get a free explanation of a rally and a great picture of Mark’s hair. All this wrapped around a great explanation of how that pesky scoring system works. Only at Third Shot Sports.

Is it true that you do not keep your server number (1 or 2) throughout the game? It changes with each sideout. When there is a sideout, the player on the right is always server 1 (except the 1st point). Thank you for your help.
Whoever is on the right is first server after a side out. Each won rally the server switches from side to side so may end up on the left at the next side out.
At the start of the game, and after a side out, the serve always comes from the right side first. However, sometimes players may be forced to serve from one side of the court but prefer to play the rest of the point on the opposite side. They will serve as required, and then move to their desired side. So, the serve would come from the right side of the court, but that person who served may then moved to the left. It’s called stacking. We have a video on it on our channel.
Good question! If a team wins a rally when they are serving, same person keeps serving but from the other court. If they lose the rally, that person loses the serve. So at the very start of a game (002, serving from the right) if the serving team wins, the server would then serve from the left side of the court (1-0-2). Does that make sense?
You leave out a very important point that should be introduced in the very beginning. And that is that the very first server of the game is know as the "first server", which is different than "server #1". And it should be noted that the 'first server" will ALWAYS be serving on the right side when their score is even. The "first server" can be server #1 or #2 depending on where they are standing when they get a side out.
I feel like pickleball doubles scoring is a bit convoluted. Should have just adopted tennis doubles scoring. Tennis scoring, altogether. 15,30,40,Ad, game. New to pickleball, and I can't keep up with all the confusion on court about whose serve it is, which side to serve from, etc.
Once the 1st server serves at 0-0-2 and loses, once the other team loses and it's still 0-0, how does the next person on the original service side call the score? 0-0-1, since now they are the 1st server for the team? Seems odd since they started at 0-0-2, even though they were the first server of the game period.
At the start of the game,,,the serve say 002 and goes in a rally,,surely won that rally,,two things will change,,server will go on and change or switch places with his/her team,,secondly she has to say the score,,,102???? Right????
With regular scoring, yup. There is a version called “rally” scoring where a point is awarded after each rally. But this is not typically the version used.
I can't stop laughing. You explained this like you are talking to a 3 year old. Last I heard, they ain't capable of playing Pickleball. I couldn't keep watching as I thought I was in pre-school again..... What score do you play to win?

Hi Mark. To follow up on this great video..can you explain how to know which side of the court you should be on based on the score?
You have an even score? Serve from right side facing the net. Odd # is from left side
