I took my mother to the Dunes buffet when she visited Vegas. The food was very good. I visited the Dunes again right before it was imploded. If memory serves me correctly, before its implosion I was reading in the newspaper about a guy who worked there since it had first opened in 1955. He was very saddened that the hotel was closing. I always hoped that a loyal employee like that found another job on the Strip.
I won $40 at the Dunes in 1977, which was my 1st trip to Las Vegas! I was on vacation out West, and took a bus up from Phoenix, Arizona. In subsequent visits to Las Vegas, I usually won at the Dunes, but never very much. I feel bad that it is no longer there!
Thanks for showing this, I stayed in the old back rooms, long walk, it was in 1986 , I was 16 y/o , they had 2 pools, 1 shape like a “A” , Good memories!!
My parents took my sister, brother and I on a trip to the American southwest way back in 1970. We stopped in Las Vegas for one night and my parents took us to the "Dome of the Sea" seafood restaurant at the Dunes Hotel/Casino. Fond memories of a great meal and a gorgeous young, woman playing a harp while traveling around the center of the restaurant on a mono-rail type seat that looked like a shell or swan (can't quite remember) and was suspended over a small pool of water. Thanks for a well done history of this long gone, iconic Las Vegas hotel and casino!
I am a Cab driver going on 8 years and it is SOOOO wonderful and shocking to see the photos and history of this city, as apposed to how I see it today 2021. Thanks for the memories!
6:16 Ah, yes. The legendary wealthy real estate mogul and founder/CEO of Mirage Resorts (now MGM Resorts International) Steve Wynn, who played the pivotal role of overhauling the Strip by leveling the Dunes for the Bellagio.
My first trip to Vegas 1961I was 12 years old. In. the early dawn, Dad pulled in under the sultan and I was taken by the big lights that were his rings. The whole thing was just so overwhelming. I always remember the pool surrounded by rooms on two stories. Everyone was super nice and personnel knew my name after the first day. It is a golden memory that is still with me.
How you doing? My name is Bob Anderson and I just saw you talking about the Dunes Hotel Casino. If you are talking about the Dunes, you probably know who I am. I had my own room at the Top of The Dunes where I was given a 2 week engagement and I wound up staying on the top of the Dunes for 12 years. My shows started at 10 in the evening and 2 am in the morning. It was the hang out for all the stars to come and hang out and that is exactly what they did. I don't know of any major star on the strip that did not come at least once to my 2 o'clock show and in most cases got up and performed with me all night. I'm talking Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. Tom Jones, Liberace, Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, Jack Jones, Wayne Newton, Dom De Luise, Shecky Green , Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles, Robert Goulet, Debbie Reynolds, and all the others. If you just hit You tube and print Bob Anderson Singer or Impressionist, you'll be able to see a little of who I am and what I continue to do. All the best.
This was very interesting, I stayed there in 1986 in the very back of the motel was the old part of it, not the tower part. Thanks for the info of Dunes….
My Godfather, Frederic Apcar was part owner of the Dunes and he was the first producer to bring topless showgirls to Las Vegas from Paris and London, called the Bluebell girls in 1959. I got my first big job as a musical director from him in a show he had produced in the Harrah's Casino Hotel Lake Tahoe, Nevada for 4 years 1977 to 81
Just a small correction, only part of City Center, non of the Monte Carlo (yeah okay Park MGM) and none of New York New York are built on the Dunes course. The course was very narrow for an 18 hole course, it ran next to I-15, going across maybe half a block.
Interesting historical vlog. Don't know why you showed a picture of Tillman Fertitta's Golden Nugget in the marina area of Atlantic City. Steve Wynn's Golden Nugget was on the boardwalk now closed after changing hands many times.
In the late 1970's I saw a magician lecture in New York. That magician was Paul Harris who was the house magician at The Dunes Hotel/Casino. He is the best magician I have ever seen. He is a legend among magicians.
@Bigfriendly15 I agree 100%. Hostility vanished and it was just crashing the buck. Locals stopped going to the strip. Exact same thing happened in Atlanta Ga Underground Atlanta.
Would you consider making short video of Is Michael Gaughan's Royal Inn Hotel/Debbie Reynolds Hotel. Michael Gaughan would go on to sell the hotel and build the Barbary Coast and continue with the remaining coast properties. I worked for him before becoming a teacher in the Clark County school district.
Played Golf at the Dunes in the late 70's and early 80's, I do remember coming across a horrific scene in the back of the Hotel. It was early morning on the way to playing Golf, we stumbled upon a scene out of a Horror Movie. The hallway or entry way in the back had Blood splattered everywhere with Police Tape around it as well. It was sight I will never forget as well, we never did find out what had happen there. Not a very good memory of the Dunes for me....
I worked for Ben Riggio general manager at the dunes I worked on his Ranch on West Sahara and Tenaya back when it was all desert Ben and his wife were into Arabian horses
I thought the Dunes closed in January of 1992 and stayed vacant till its first implosion in October of 1993. Winn would buy it to replace it in November of 1992.
i really wonder why the Dunes sign was imploded, it was a real symbol of Las Vegas and imploding something that could be part of history makes no sense.
Morris shankner borrow money not only from the teamsters but from Indian springs State Bank that collapsed with Farhad Azima.... savings and loan crisis

I still have the Do Not Disturb sign I swiped from the Dunes, so there. Vegas is no fun anymore; it was cheaper and safer when the mob ran it. Now it's just overbuilt and overpriced, and blackjack only gets you 6:5 instead of 3:2.

I bought some nightstands from the Dunes after it closed. I still have & use them today.

I've got great memories of staying here in 1991. I turned 14 years old that year and was the most memorable holiday for me and my family
Must have been amazing! Thanks for sharing.
@@LegendaryForces absolutely started in LA to SFO then Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas and back.
Amazing how the casino only took $3m to build but at one point was taking in $10m a week, that's insane return on investment

Didn’t know it had been replaced but the Bellagio. I spent like almost an hour looking for it.
In 1988, I saw comedian Argus Hamilton perform there. I also remember the marquee in front of the hotel advertising "Steak and Lobster" for $4.99!!!!
That must have been so awesome!!

Fantastic video Oscar❤️
The Dunes had the coolest sign.
I remember driving down to look atvit back in the 80s on our way through las vegas
Agreed. Another great sign from that period was the Stardust sign
I agree! Something was hypnotizing with the lights going up and down.
@Max C i think they did bring it somewhere.
@Max C oh one of those junkyards for those types of things or a collector.

I WENT TO THE DUNES EVERYDAY, GREAT BUFFET, $1 SHRIMP COCKTAIL. GREAT FUN
@Bigfriendly15 how about 99 cent breakfast with ham steak as big as the whole plate. $1.99 Prime Rib dinner served 24 hours a day.

Another awesome video. Thanks Oscar
Thank you!
Precisely! Thanks for the info!

Stayed at the Dunes the first time in the Summer of 1969. In one of the motel style units in the back

In their last few years I think the Dunes and the Frontier were the most miserable, depressing casinos on the strip. And nearly always empty.
Could they not have at least preserved that iconic world famous fabulous neon sign ?.
I have a set of Dunes chips. They're some of my favorites. Great colors and feel.
Awesome! There are so many amazing sets out there.
