Swing by / past (something) = Unintentionally or unexpectedly visit a place or person for a short time. Visit a place quickly/briefly, especially on your way to another place. Ex: They’d swing by her place around 7.30. He swings past the supermarket on the way to the party.
We can have these words as the synonyms and related words:
Come by somewhere = Visit a place for a short time, often when we are going somewhere else. Ex: He'll come by the old school / his home one day this week and the have a chat.
Come over = Visit someone's home. Ex: He came over for dinner last night
Drop by somewhere = Come to see someone usually briefly and without a specific invitation, sometimes at a stated place. Ex: He dropped by her home to ask for the books. The writers should drop by the publisher if they wanted the job.
Drop in = Come for a visit, especially without having got an invitation for a specific time. Ex: You can drop in whenever you’re in the town.
Look in on somebody/something = Make a short visit, visit someone or something for a short time. Ex: The nearby relatives often look in on these older people. It really helps!
Look someone up = Visit someone you have not seen for a long time when you are visiting the place where they live. Ex: Look me up next time you're in Thu Dau Mot City, OK.
Pop in/into somewhere = Visit briefly. Ex: Why don’t you pop in and see us tomorrow.
Pop into a place = Visit there briefly, usually for some purpose. Ex: He pop into the drugstore (to get some medicine) on the way home last night.
Run across somebody = Meet someone you know when you are not expecting to. Ex: He ran across several old friends when he went back to his hometown.
Run into somebody = Meet someone by chance. Meet someone you know when you are not expecting to. Ex: He ran into Mary on the tour and said it is a small world. He ran into Tony he used to know at school.
Stop by somewhere = Visit somebody for a short time, usually on the way to another place. Ex: He was passing his home, so he'd stop by for a chat.
Stop in = Visit a person or place for a short time, usually when you are going somewhere else. Ex: He stopped in his old school on the way home to see the new car.)
