Calm - Ease | Guided Meditation by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • This is a 20-minute guided meditation offered by Thich Nhat Hanh, part of the Plum Village Essential Meditations in the free Plum Village app: plumvillage.app/
*"Breathing in, I know I am breathing in.*
*Breathing out, I know I am breathing out.*
    *In,*
    *Out.*
After saying these sentences we can abbreviate them by saying "In" as we breathe in and "Out" as we breathe out. We don't try to control our breathing. Whether our in-breath is long or short, deep or shallow, we just breathe naturally and shine the light of mindfulness on it. When we do this we notice that, in fact, our breathing does become slower and deeper
    naturally.
*Breathing in, my in-breath has become deep.*
**Breathing out, my outbreath has become slow. **
    *Deep,*
    *Slow.*
We don't have to make an extra effort. It just becomes deeper and slower by itself, and we recognize that. Later on, you will notice that you have become calmer and more at ease.
**Breathing in, I calm my body and my mind. **
    *Breathing out, I ease everything.*
    *Calm,*
    *Ease.*
    I am not struggling anymore.
"Breathing in, I smile. Breathing out, I release all my worries and anxieties. Smile/release." We are able to smile to ourselves and release all our worries. There are more than three hundred muscles in our face, and when we know how to breathe in and smile, these muscles can relax. This is "mouth yoga." We smile and are able to release all our feelings and emotions.
*Breathing in, I establish myself in the present moment.*
*Breathing out, I know this is a wonderful moment.*
    *Present moment,*
    *wonderful moment.*
Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment fully alive and aware.
    *In, out*
    *Deep, slow*
    *Calm, ease*
    *Smile, release*
    *Present moment, wonderful moment.*
If you use this poem during sitting or walking meditation, it can be very nourishing and healing. Practice each line for as long as you wish.

Thich Nhat Hanh has passed to the other side. May he have a smooth passage. For me Thai was and is the most extraordinary person and teacher. His gentle soul and his humor, his wisdom, his vast knowledge and interests, his. poetic creative writing, his love and celebration of life, his devotion to humanity and nature, his deep political conviction and engagement grounded in his biography and ever present - all of this made him for me the most diverse teacher and human being. Thank you for what you gave us and are still giving to us. Dagmar🙏🏼 Namaste

@@daves4687 Almost four months now Dave. Straight. The results have been transformational.
Let me enumerate some of them:
      1. Feeling at least 90% less anxious than before.
      2. Also feeling more present, more vibrant, more alive throughtout my day to day activities.
      3. Some oh Thich prompts resonste with me some days. For example, I constantly reming myself that "nothing is more important than my peace and joy", and that puts things in perspective.
      4. Less toxic cravings in general. Because I feel more present, less need to go out to scavenge for toxic "highs".
      5. Happier and satisfied than before. Paying way more attention to smaller things, and constantly feeling the impermanence of it all, and thus, what makes every moment special. This, specially, when hanging out with family.
In conclusion, i've named my meditation habit my "mother habit", the only habit that cannot go if having a rough day. And this has made all the difference.

Same here! I have started using this since I developed a temporarily incapacitating illness which has put all normal life on hold. It helps me tremendously. I’m so pleased it really resonates for others too. Exactly what you say Alan. I can imagine every day before 6am would be wonderful. I too always come back to those words “nothing is more important than my peace, my joy”. It is so true! I never ever imagined I’d get into meditation. Life changing and so wish to develop it more and be able to generate stillness and joy at Will, in particular stillness in tricky situations and turbulent emotions.

For years I told myself that I could never meditate because I have such an over active mind. I have Aspergers. Most of the time it feels like I have two inner monologues thinking of two separate things at the same time, always one being the louder primary thought and another become a quieter secondary thought. Shortly before Thay's passing I began to understand mediation and practice it more mindfully, but just barely. Within 24 hours of Thay's passing almost everything "clicked" entirely and I don't understand why. I practice mindfulness everyday and as often as I can. At work, on my couch, in the car, drinking tea. In the beginning I could only meditate for no longer than 3 to 5 minutes before getting frustrated and giving up. Now I find myself not wanting to leave my meditation and always looking forward to the next time I can sit and enjoy another peaceful moment.
Thank you so much Thay and Plum Village for truly changing my life!

The most powerful message of this meditation, and one that I keep coming back regularly to, is "nothing is more important than your peace, and your joy; smile, smile to everything, even to your difficulties". After several months of practice, this particular message is coming to me when I am feeling low, stressed, or anxious. It has become a powerful message that gets ingrained deeper and deeper the more i`ve practiced this particular meditation. Yesterday, for example, I was feeling angry about some work issue, and this message suddenly sprung up, and the anger vanished immediately. Practice it. Practice it every day. And you`ll soon be able to identify that peace and that joy that are always there, right beneath the surface, and more importantly, you`ll be able to become that peace, and become that joy, whenever you`re feeling out of sorts.

@@feelsokayman3959 bowing in gratitude is a pretty common and humbling gesture. it's not to elevate someone above you, its to express gratitude and respect. in my time doing jiu jitsu we would all bow before entering or leaving the mat. we would all shake hands and bow to each other at the beginning and the end of session - regardless of what belt you had (a black belt with 20 years experience would still bow to a white belt in their first session for example). and when i would visit a zen meditation center we would all bow before entering the room, and bow at the cushion before and after sitting on it.

Took me a while to realize I shouldn't try to say in my mind what he says Everytime I breathe. Yet it's more like an event that happens. Breathing in I realize my breath has become deep. Don't say it Everytime...
I learned that in one of his other meditations. He said it like that. It's not to be said it is more like an event that happens each time. He says it in one of his walking meditation teachings.
That changed this meditation for me from a 1/10 to a 10/10. A go to happiness meditation or release and enjoy meditation

If i was a king ruling . I would encourage meditation to my whole commune. Though i may not be the king. But as a human where ever i be i will add the glimpse of meditation to life. I will not let the buddha with in me die. Even if i am married or engaging at my death bed. i will be aware and experience the ugliest beauty of life.
Really Really thank you Plum. You guys and master Thich Nhat Hanh are the ones who have really understood buddha and not modified his practice given to the world many many years or decades ago. The practice is pure and still the same as buddha taught i can feel it in his words. I can feel what buddha meant. Thank you. May every king, politician, student, thief, prostitute in general human experience this joy that they have been in search for every second in their lifes.

Dear Thay, your teachings have brought me so much inner peace, thank you. I just meditated to this and towards the end I felt impatience crop up. Instead of getting irritated, I embraced the feeling, and felt the impatience feel 'shock' at the fact I'd embraced and hugged it instead of pushing it away. This made me laugh out loud for the last minute or so. Thank you, this was a wonderful breakthrough.
