+Mark Reilly what i do now is strap my board on before i get off so avoid that. I know you're not supposed to do that but there are more skiers than boarders and i used to crash into or tangle up with skiers sometimes.
I find dismounting from a chairlift much easier on a snowboard compared to skis. On skis, I crash nearly every time I try and dismount but very rarely on a board. I was an okay beginner skiier on the slopes but getting off a chairlift was probably my greatest challenge on skis.
I'm really scared of getting off the chairlift as a snowboarder. I've been skiing most my life and last year my cousin and I wanted to try snowboarding. The biggest challenge for me was getting off the lift. I fell every, single time. I broke my wrist falling while getting off one time. I really want to snowboard, but I'm scared of falling off the lift and breaking something again. What do I do?
Thats actually a good idea. Something like a seat that can pivot right or left on each end (goofies on the left, regulars on the right) so instead of prepping by adjusting your body you could lift a little latch thing and swivel the seat. Having one on each end of the lift seat means that there are still two spots in the middle for skiers on quads.
3:00 could have been avoided if there wasnt people blocking the bottom of the ramp, Once you are off the lift, get out the way so that those coming after you dont have to slam into the ground to avoid you
Its real awkward to get off a ski lift with both feet in the bindings. The back foot is almost stuck below the ski lift if you try to get off normally.
@runbren A possible reason for boarders is they are also so afraid to catch an edge that they try to keep an edge without a foot strapped in so they turn and fall. Just throwing that in the mix.
i admit. it was hard and still is the first time i get back on the snow. but once i caught myself going the wrong way and i tried to turn and my whole leg like flipped with my board twisting it. my knee got sprained
The reason Snowboarders are more prone to falling is because on the lift your hips are staying perpendicular to riding position so you must rotate while you're getting down. Skiers only have to sit up and they're ready to go.
@Mu5ik4Life depends which model, they are not for park use by a long shot, but for glades and normal riding i've felt they are just as responsive as a standard binding, the newest models address this issue and if you're willing to spend the money they are very low profile.
It is impossible to load onto a chairlift with both feet strapped in. You could probably reach down and attach your back foot during the ride up, but that's very difficult, and potentially dangerous.
It's getting the hang of lining the board up straight and getting the back foot to land on the board next to the back binding. Skiers just need to stand up. There are a lot more steps involved in getting off a ski lift with a snowboard.
it can be very different on a snowboard cause ue foot is not strapped into ur binding and ur foot can slide around a lot if u don't clear the snow off ur board if ur having trouble get a kick stamp I think? newsy its a sticky thing that will give u good grip when getting off chairlift
I always hated getting off of the ski lift that doesn't have a hill for you to slide down. It's the time of deal where you have to push off of the lift. It sucks most with snowboards.
Depends on the rider. I find I fall over much earlier when I have my foot close to the centre of the board. Although one thing I do notice is that my butt is more likely to land on the tail of the board and then I toboggan away with your method rather than hitting snow and getting stuck.
let's face it, chairlifts weren't designed for snowboarders. they need to have a side-seat type rig every other chair position for us boarders... I love watching these videos because then I don't feel so bad for the few yet epic fails I've had on the chairs.
Yes. There is a rule for riding with one binding. But when no one is really cares I prefer both binding on. Riding to the lift shouldn't be that hard with both bindings on if there is nice flat ground with a snow. You can jump to move or help yourself with a handholds.
OMG i feel ya man, i was with my dad and my sister both who can't ski very good and they sat on either sides of me and trying to get off that was hell!
It's not funny when they just fall but when they're still standing and they they try EVERY kind of arm flailing leg flailing movement to keep from falling, it's HILARIOUS!!!
How would you skate on the lift with both bindings on? Unless you somehow can put them on while riding up the lift. That would be a pain in the ass and probably cause you to fall off the lift lmao
Everybody has to learn at some point. Not everybody starts snowboarding/skiing when they're young, so they don't have the balance yet or the confidence. I remember when I was learning I used to psych myself out or just not get my balance right and then eat shit.
wow i was snowboarding out at marmot basin and i was sitting with two skiiers on each side of me and when we got off my board slipped onto one of there skis and he lifted his ski i was stuck on and he flipped me and made me look like i was crap at snowboarding
I snowboard and I personally find it like 10 times easier to just keep both feet strapped in on my board. I can get on and off the lift way easier this way. Every time I do this I get yelled at, though. I'm not sure why the operators yell at me. So many people are terrible at using the lift that it seems like they'd be fine with the rider doing whatever makes it easier for them (within reason).
I remember in beginner's snowboarding class they had us ride down the bunny slope with one foot out of the bindings and I could never make it 2 ft cuz my foot would slip off the board. Lol. Skiers don't have much trouble cuz they have poles for balance, and boarders have nothing to hold onto but hope and pray they don't fall down the lift slope. xD
I just started snowboarding, so I don't mean to sound elitist, but i think people fall because they over complicate it. just put your other foot down as if it were strapped in, stand like normal, and go straight down the ramp. haha and then stop somewhat graceful-ish and crawl to where you need to strap it. i dunno, is it just me that thinks this?
@Serveck fair enough, glades and regular shit and their cool i guess... but honestly if im gonna bomb it down a run, or do some rly tight glades or park stuff, i just feel waaaayy more secure with a toe strap
oh dear =( worst feeling ever starting out boarding and first few times off the ski school have all met in a line in front of the chair lift...not only have to manage not to hit the floor but also not take out any small kiddies, haha...quite proud to say i managed it just about, chair lifts are soooo much easier on blades than on a board!
This is a pretty steep dismount. This happened to me when I was a beginner at Whistler, and the lifty stood there laughing. Not nice! Boarders should jam their back foot against the bindings, and it would be good to have a stomp pad right there too. Watch my video for a hint that can help in this situation.
dismounting a chair lift is deff. not designed for boarders, but hey thats life, i just hate the idiots that linger at the bottom and have no consideration for others getting off the lift...when i fell i just got out of the way as fast as i could. even the boarders hoarding the tops and middle of the trails to strap in.. take it to the tree line
@runbren Everyone has to learn at some point - I fell over the first few times, but I don't feel ashamed or like I've done anything wrong. The reason I love snowboarding is because there's a friendly atmosphere and most people are happy to give you tips and help you learn. I'm glad you weren't working the lifts when I was learning...
I been snowboarding for 5 years and I still fall off the lift from time to time. Shits awkward and clumsy as hell. Skiers don't know the struggle lol
I was an okay beginner skiier on the slopes but getting off a chairlift was probably my greatest challenge on skis.
anzaeria I feel like whichever sport you try first you're going to find easier getting off the chairlift
Stomp pad bro
I'm really scared of getting off the chairlift as a snowboarder. I've been skiing most my life and last year my cousin and I wanted to try snowboarding. The biggest challenge for me was getting off the lift. I fell every, single time. I broke my wrist falling while getting off one time. I really want to snowboard, but I'm scared of falling off the lift and breaking something again. What do I do?
That’s the worst designed lift exit I’ve ever seen
The hardest part of snowboarding.
The struggle is real.
To dismount:
1. Stand up when chair reaches top
2. Turn sideways
3. Catch edges
4. Cry
these are beginers and who the fuck designed that chair?
why put a black slope at the end of a lift ?
Thats actually a good idea. Something like a seat that can pivot right or left on each end (goofies on the left, regulars on the right) so instead of prepping by adjusting your body you could lift a little latch thing and swivel the seat. 3:00 could have been avoided if there wasnt people blocking the bottom of the ramp, Once you are off the lift, get out the way so that those coming after you dont have to slam into the ground to avoid you
if you think about it. its actually worse for new people boarding to hold on to each other cus that just screws the whole lift up when they fall.
Next million dollar idea? We may be on to something here.
How do you fall on skis.... I mean really...
When I got off I barley got off and hit hit me in the back of my head
1:12 so symmetrical like it's choreographed
3:28 rescue fail...
The last one is the funniest...my stomach is hurting from laughing so hard!
i admit. it was hard and still is the first time i get back on the snow. but once i caught myself going the wrong way and i tried to turn and my whole leg like flipped with my board twisting it. my knee got sprained
You have the best job ever, I srsly hope fail isnt contageous
Chairlifts are not meant nor are they snowboard friendly!!! Years later and I occasionally fall or someone grabs on to me
12% skiers 94% snowboarders
The reason Snowboarders are more prone to falling is because on the lift your hips are staying perpendicular to riding position so you must rotate while you're getting down. Skiers only have to sit up and they're ready to go.
Well and snowboarders only have one foot strapped. I tried strapping both and it helped but you have to strap them while on the lift.
@Mu5ik4Life depends which model, they are not for park use by a long shot, but for glades and normal riding i've felt they are just as responsive as a standard binding, the newest models address this issue and if you're willing to spend the money they are very low profile.
I love it when you see a snowboarder carve up a black diamond and then wipe out getting off the lift
It is impossible to load onto a chairlift with both feet strapped in.
You could probably reach down and attach your back foot during the ride up, but that's very difficult, and potentially dangerous.
Half of these aren't anywhere near fails compared to my first time on the snow. haha I still can't believe I didn't break something.
When you'r foot isnt strapped in they say plant it against the binding and forget about it
lmao 1:52 the guy totally splits the uprights....ITS GOOD!
What's with all the matching gear?
Awesome video, completely highlights why I hate every last lifty at Perisher.
my first time boarding, i was falling about every time for a bit
I agree, it can be a Boarder only chairlift that will cause skiers to crash every time they get off.
Depends on the rider. I find I fall over much earlier when I have my foot close to the centre of the board. Although one thing I do notice is that my butt is more likely to land on the tail of the board and then I toboggan away with your method rather than hitting snow and getting stuck.
it amazes me some people even make it too the mountain without gettin in some kind of accident
This video make me feel better about myself lol
I can't get off that thing without falling for dear life
the guy that just stays on the lift at the end is awesome he made me lol!!
last one: damn, butt is still frozen to the lift. *anotherround**sigh*
The kid got off but not him hhhhmm
A fitting revenge for Poma lifts.
let's face it, chairlifts weren't designed for snowboarders. they need to have a side-seat type rig every other chair position for us boarders... I love watching these videos because then I don't feel so bad for the few yet epic fails I've had on the chairs.
@420squeeg
its in australia. they do have detatchables but this particular one in this resort doesnt.
I hate it when people wait right in the middle of the ramp and you end up swirving to avoid them then crash into your mate sitting next to you ¬.¬
This is why I go on ski lifts alone...
i sometimes do my other binding up on the lift then penguin waddle 10 feet to the runs. but it is annoying to do them up on the lift
i still dont get why its so hard to get of a chair lift for some people... the last time i fell was in gr. 4
@WeirdoTrolly so what about the other -6% ?
Is that at sir sams?
Yes. There is a rule for riding with one binding. But when no one is really cares I prefer both binding on. Riding to the lift shouldn't be that hard with both bindings on if there is nice flat ground with a snow. You can jump to move or help yourself with a handholds.
they usually tell you to keep 1 foot out which is pretty crap.
comeon it's hard to board with only one foot strapped in
Negatives of snowboard: T-Bar and getting off chairlifts and sitting on chairlifts.
almost all the ones that fall are snowboarders, painful sport :L
OMG i feel ya man, i was with my dad and my sister both who can't ski very good and they sat on either sides of me and trying to get off that was hell!
its not easy especially when you only have one foot strapped in. but you get better. snowboarding is not easy
@2:56 WFT were they trying to do? They didn't even have their boards turned.
when you see snowboarders arms flailing, you know there going down
it snaps your skis down and kinda forces you off. It helps, trust me.
you need one. they stop the lift if you have two, asside from the fact that you can't get out.
if in the off chance you do fall, you can gtfo of the way quicker so other ppl coming up wont crash into you
It's not funny when they just fall but when they're still standing and they they try EVERY kind of arm flailing leg flailing movement to keep from falling, it's HILARIOUS!!!
i tore my medial ligament coming off a chairlift on a snowboard
How would you skate on the lift with both bindings on? Unless you somehow can put them on while riding up the lift. That would be a pain in the ass and probably cause you to fall off the lift lmao
As a lift operator, this was really boring. However, this is the most awesome part of every days work xD
Everybody has to learn at some point. Not everybody starts snowboarding/skiing when they're young, so they don't have the balance yet or the confidence. I remember when I was learning I used to psych myself out or just not get my balance right and then eat shit.
the last one 3:40 when dad left and never came back.
wow i was snowboarding out at marmot basin and i was sitting with two skiiers on each side of me and when we got off my board slipped onto one of there skis and he lifted his ski i was stuck on and he flipped me and made me look like i was crap at snowboarding
Ya maybe if you're the only one on that chair.
Why don't you ask one of them to switch a place with you before getting on?
most people snowboarders dont know how to have their boards ready when they get off.
Once a lift OP allways a lift OP. Gappers make my day !
@BorntoskateJr it's the guys job to watch the chair lift what else would he do?
I remember in beginner's snowboarding class they had us ride down the bunny slope with one foot out of the bindings and I could never make it 2 ft cuz my foot would slip off the board. Lol. Skiers don't have much trouble cuz they have poles for balance, and boarders have nothing to hold onto but hope and pray they don't fall down the lift slope. xD
@TRRforLife I know that... I ski and my husband snowboards... snowboarders have trouble in all sorts of lifts, the worse is the poma lift...
I snowboard and its kinda hard getting off the lift you just cant think about it too much but i used to ski and how do you fall on skis?? seriously???
i hate it when your on a ski lift and two skiers are on both sides of you and you are a snowboarder D:
I just started snowboarding, so I don't mean to sound elitist, but i think people fall because they over complicate it. just put your other foot down as if it were strapped in, stand like normal, and go straight down the ramp. haha and then stop somewhat graceful-ish and crawl to where you need to strap it. i dunno, is it just me that thinks this?
it's easier to have back foot towards middle of the board.
what if you just.. *shudders* went straight!?
I would just put both bindings on -_- unless its like a rule that you need one ?
@Serveck fair enough, glades and regular shit and their cool i guess... but honestly if im gonna bomb it down a run, or do some rly tight glades or park stuff, i just feel waaaayy more secure with a toe strap
These types of people are the reason I have topsheet chips in my $500 board >=(
@TonightsSpecials Every once and a while you have all skiers trying to squeeze out and they tangle up, but no excuse for the ones alone or two.
oh dear =( worst feeling ever starting out boarding and first few times off the ski school have all met in a line in front of the chair lift...not only have to manage not to hit the floor but also not take out any small kiddies, haha...quite proud to say i managed it just about, chair lifts are soooo much easier on blades than on a board!
@runbren God bless you this makes me feel so much better about my first time I was no where near this bad
why am i not suprised becaue the fails are all on rentals...
In their defense it does look like a fast lift, and the Australian's don't always have a particularly long ski season to practice....
That is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time omg!!!
1:54 and it's good!!
This is a pretty steep dismount. This happened to me when I was a beginner at Whistler, and the lifty stood there laughing. Not nice!
Boarders should jam their back foot against the bindings, and it would be good to have a stomp pad right there too. Watch my video for a hint that can help in this situation.
Set up a camera at that one chair at Guthega, It is the most unforgiving thing for newbies.
chairlifts aren't made for snowboarders, period.
Well atleast they can stand longer then me
Thats why I strap in before I get off the lift. lol
this has happened multiple times to all of us.. at least the snowboarders
Some lifties get mad at you if you do that in Oregon atleast because you can carve out parts of the landing
dismounting a chair lift is deff. not designed for boarders, but hey thats life, i just hate the idiots that linger at the bottom and have no consideration for others getting off the lift...when i fell i just got out of the way as fast as i could. even the boarders hoarding the tops and middle of the trails to strap in.. take it to the tree line
0:32 forever alone
