The course is divided into four (unequal) parts. Part I focuses on how socialism and communism have been understood within the Marxian, worker self-management, and utopian traditions. Part II turns to a particular kind of class analysis differentiating capitalism from socialism and communism. The class theory of socialism, communism and capitalism developed in Part II is then used in III to answer the question: what was the USSR across its history in relation to capitalism, socialism, and communism? Part IV ends the course with an exploration of the implications of the answer provided for the USSR for other socialist experiments across the 20th century, particularly China, and possibly new revolutionary movements in the 21st century as well.
