I took part in the 1982 World Rubik's Cube Championship.
I was 11 years old.
The cubes now are amazing, but we had better timers back then, in 1982. Seriously!
There was a sensor mat on the table, and the timer started when you picked the cube up, and stopped when you put it down.
Now, all cube records have to include the time it takes to move your hands to the cube from the mat pads, and also back to the pads after the solve. This is probably only a few hundredths of a second, but obviously a few hundredths of a seconds can be important.

I wasn't in the final. Just the UK Midlands regional heat. I got 94 seconds. Nicolas Hammond (check him on Wikipedia) won the heat with around 35 seconds. He then lost in the national final to Julian Chilvers, who lost in the world final. All the best!
@BakedLikeACake This was not a problem. The cube was on the table, but not on the sensor before inspection. We did 15 seconds of inspection, and then placed the cube on the sensor. This primed the sensor. Then, when we lifted the cube, the timer started. It worked very well.

solve was disqualified as stickerless cubes were not competition legal back then
( tho were stickerless cubes even manufactured in the 80's ? )
They were illegal from 2011-2015 because the stickerless DaYan Cubes came out in 2011
I think stickered cubes should be illegal cause you know ;) you can just peel the stickers
The cubes were all provided by the organizer (I guess in order to prevent contestants from getting an advantage by putting vaseline in their cubes.)
So you probably couldn't bring any kind of cube into the competition unless you brought enough for everyone to share.

although in the world championships in 1982, competitors weren't allowed to use off brand cubes (and they might have even been provided by organizer), good video
would have to be the og rubik's logo which looks a bit different than the modern logo. Hard to remove that and bring it to the present. Also stickerless cubes weren't allowed in 1982 although that would be an easy fix with a stickered gan cube

@@jogle9013 granted 3.47 is incredible but you’ll find cubers out there that do a solve and go like “urgh! 13 seconds?! That was terrible!”. Hence, it’s nice to see people still keen to find amusement and satisfaction in their own progress rather than comparing themselves to practically every other faster Cuber out there. :)
