  • In this video we are taking a look at the root causes of seborrheic dermatitis (a.k.a. dandruff) and how to treat it naturally.
    I used to have really intense seborrheic dermatitis, where I was also losing a lot of hair. It was very uncomfortable and embarrassing anytime I went to the get my haircut. And it wasn't until I addressed the root cause of my seborrheic dermatitis that I was able to heal it naturally.

    I have had seborrcheic dermatitis for 5 years now. I didn’t take it seriously back then and now it’s gotten so worse. Plus I did cysteine treatment on my hair so it wouldn’t look frizzy. Now my hair has got even more damaged and I’ve severe hair breakage and hair thinning along with sebborhic dermatitis and the most worst dry and frizzy hair I’ve ever had. What should I actually do to get rid of the dermatitis and also about my hair thinning and breaking? Will oiling my scalp once a week not cause the dermatitis to flare up more? I’ve stopped oiling since forever and now I think I need to get back to it. Does home made hair masks also work on the scalp like eggs and oils? Please help!

    Thank you. I was sensitive in my scalp, but this year, I had to take antibiotics to kill a bacteria in my gut, and it was worse for everything. My scalp is itchy, my eyes, more sensitive with food than before. I definitely prefer natural solutions and products. I will change my diet again. I try to avoid sugar, but sometimes it is not easy when you want something, but you have many restrictions in your diet.

    Thank you Dr. Sarah, this video really helped me! I definitely would love to learn more about the hormonal fluctuations/imbalances and that potentially causing flare ups. I don’t eat gluten anymore because about two years ago I became sensitive to it - I’m super mindful of what I consume internally and externally. Do you have any recommendations for books or articles to read on Seborrheic Dermatitis?

      I'm glad it was helpful! And yes there is definitely more I can talk about with hormone imbalances and seb derm (like a whole other video), but I didn't want this video to be too long! I don't have any book recommendations off the top of my head. For articles I typically go to PubMed or sometimes the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD). I'm not sure of a holistic/integrative database for dermatology articles at the moment.

      You will be a happy person like me😂..as I had very severe sobheric dermatitis on my scalp

    Trying to 'train' my hair was the worst advice I took from TH-cam influencers. A year down the line I am still paying for it. Not washing my hair every day did NOT realign my scalp and readjust the oil - it made it worse, more itchy and created lumps and bumps I never had b4. I persevered for some months and created hell for myself.

      Yes. Sugar is the same no matter where it's from.

    • @DrSarahWright
      @DrSarahWright  ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hello there, great question! No, this does not include sugars from fruit. In the video I was referring to cane sugar as being a trigger. Cane sugar is made up of sucrose (glucose + fructose) with no nutritional value while fruit sugar is primary fructose combined with many important nutrients as well as fiber therefore the body metabolizes these products differently and the effect on your body and skin health is different. Fruit consumed in balanced portions should not be a problem for most people with seborrheic dermatitis.

    • @DrSarahWright
      @DrSarahWright  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nibbax7772 I typically don't recommend using any shampoo daily for seborrheic dermatitis because this will strip your scalp of it's natural oils too much and then overtime can cause the body to produce more sebum which causes you to need the shampoo more. So, I would more likely recommend using a dandruff shampoo 2-3 times per week (4 at the most if needed) and then yes once symptoms start to improve you can reduce that to once per week and then every other week and so forth. But I would do this in combination with other lifestyle factors like maintaining a balanced diet and managing stress.

    Great video with lots of pertinent information. From what I gather, sugar, dairy, gluten and processed foods are most likely the key factors in causing Seborrheic Dermatitis as well as a hormone imbalance and high levels of inflammation and/or testosterone/estrogen. So, if I were to get prescribed an anti inflammatory medicine, would I notice a reduction in SD or would it mutate into another form of it, but more virulent and less treatable?

    • @willa1699
      @willa1699 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Instead of getting prescribed, try changing eating patterns. I eat keto/low carb and I’ve noticed less flare ups overall. I take caprylic acid, flaxseed oil, and vit d religiously it helps to keep under control.

      @@tc2664 lol yes, and those are starchy carbs, not overall good to have all the time. It will cause inflammation in the body. If you are going to eat carbs aim for complex carbs like a sweet potato but still not so often. I’ll have complex carbs but like once a day and during the day. I also have a ketazonole shampoo and a scalp oil but no anti inflammatory drugs are needed, imo. And if you can’t get away from it, just think to yourself how bad is this condition driving you crazy? For me, it was enough to give up on the foods I like all the time, I do have every now and again, but I’d rather not have to be concerned about my scalp. When I get flare ups it was so painful and my hair was thinning, as a woman it was making me self conscious all the time, so I’m willing to do what’s necessary

    In simple language : SD = inflammation ... Now , the next question is how can i eliminate inflammation ??? very easy : .Omega -6 is the main source of the inflammation in our body , and it is the THR main trigger of SD or any other inflammatory skin disease . Folks, you MUST reduce the amount of Omega 6 and increase omega 3 . ) omega -6/omega -3 ratio ) ...... All vegetable oils even the healthy ones ( olive oil , avocado oil ) or super -foods like NUTS and EGGS ALL are loaded with OMEGA 6 ...... You MUST eliminate ALL grains ( corn / oat and wheat and even rice ) ....You must eat ONLY grass fed beef ( not fed with corn ) and lots of fish (salmons ) .....The only fruit that you can have is Blueberries because it has a very low amount of fructose ...... fructose is the main source of inflammation ....Also , you must avoid fresh Raw tomato ...... All milk products ( yes including yogurt ) has to be stopped / ice cream / cheese / ....... Alos , you must ONLY eat one time a a day ( intermittent fasting ) with lots of water . Folks , i know this is VERY hard to do ,BUT that is THE only WAY to cure your SD and enjoy your clear skin again . remeber , look for food with VERY low omega 6 , thing like , coconut oil / blueberries /salmon / ONLY grass fed beef ( low omega -6 ) ( chicken and turkey both have lots of omega 6 ) ...... Dr T ( Pharm D ) with 22 years clinical experience.

      @@joannamalvahandidesilva YES , You are correct. I have lost tones of weight because my insulin and cortisone level are both down significantly . please remember SD or any autoimmune disease is triggered by our Hormones mainly insulin cortisone and sex hormones ( DHT ) for unknow reasons ...I do NOT know why this is happening ( most likely due to our DNA make up or genetics ) but I have discovered the Triggers which are waking up these dormant genes .The triggers are ( hormonal imbalances mainly caused by stress and foods ) . My skin is completely clean NOW and that has increased my confidence level almost by 400 % in my daily social interactions . people keep telling me why I have lost so much weight and they think I am sick and I explain them that I have this skin condition which I am on this diet . ....Basically , you have two options : 1) eating what you enjoy and keep your current weight so you don't look too skinny , but taking conventional drugs or ointments RXED by your dermatologist or PCP for the rest of your life , which are patching your problem or 2) CURING your condition, but starving and losing weight . Sorry , there is no other way ..... I am telling you that this nasty SD CAN be cured but you need to change your life 180 degree . are you willing to do that ? you are THE only who Must make a call , not ME . Good luck
