What about Hiccups losing his freaking leg? That shocked me so hard as a Kid. It was a really powerful idea for a kids movie, having to watch this teen deal with the loss of his leg as he tries to adjust.
@@amy-rose7090 Yeah. And it teaches that you can lose something but still go. Losing his leg didnt mean Hiccups could never walk. His leg was gone forever but he made the best out of it with the prosthetic leg. Its just really powerful. You dont see many crippled characters in Kids shows like that. And I think it matters for the show itself, because it strengthens Toothles's bond with Hiccups. They both lost a integral part of their body that they need to move arround, and both had these parts replaced and had to accustom to them. Theres a lot of kids show tackling the subject of Loss of a family member or friend. But noone really touches the subject of...Losing a part of your own body. Its one of the most disgusting kinds of loss because theres no getting over it. If you lose a leg you'll be reminded of it every day. And I think in a weird way this show tackles it great, showing Hiccups and Toothless making the best out of their situation.
I loved every aspect of it, it means he didn't get out without a scratch (like 95% of movies love to do with their protagonists), it was kinda foreshadowed with Toothless losing his wing, and it's just a sweet shot that Toothless had to help him stand up at first, it was like full circle with him having a prosthesis just like Toothless.
@@CustomKnights Yeah. In a way they complete each other. Toothless needs Hiccups to operate his new wing, and Hiccups needs Toothless to fly and move arround without stumbling arround due to his missing leg.
The movies strike me less as an adaptation, and more a full blown reimagining that basically just barrows the world and concepts. Not that that's exactly a bad thing. The original FMA series stops having any similarities to the manga after Dr. Marco appears.
Well, in case of FMA, that was only because they didn't have anymore material from the manga to go off of, since that adaptation had caught up with it. HTTYD is just a full blown reimagining.

It would be better to grade it on how the world is used in comparision to the original. To put a fine put on it, FMA did good. Akame ga Kill fell out a cliff and smashed its head open like a water melon 600 feet bellow. HTTYD did good reimaging the world. Deathflix fell off a cliff and resembled a dropped melon too.
@@rattlinbones Eh, for me, it doesn't matter at all how close the adaption is to the original, as long as it's good. I like FMAB better too, but purely because after watching the 2003 adaption, I was left feeling depressed and unsatisfied. I'm a sucker for happy endings :( Anyway, comparing the two is like apples to oranges. Both are very different, and have very different themes. Imo, I think everyone should watch both and treat it like the full package.
@@rattlinbones Oh, don't get me wrong. FMAB blows the original FMA out of the water in every possible way. I vastly prefer it. My point is that the original anime, at least for me, still did a really good job adapting the world and characters for its own uses. It took the ground work laid out by Hiromu Arakawa and built well on it in a very different, but creative way.

Alvin the Treacherous is still one of my favorite villains from anything. Nothing will be as cool as the main villain appearing on the shore in a coffin
Personally my favorite villain from the franchise was Vigo Grimborn in race to the edge series. I dunno if he was in the books so feel free to let me know

In fact before he was the 10th Doctor he had a bit role in Scream Of The Shalka, what would have been the 9th Doctor via animated web series if not for Russel T. Davies, because he was recording in the same building and was a huge fan. You can hear him when the Shalka invade the base.
This franchise was a gift. I still can’t believe it has ended. The soundtrack has to be my favorite part of the series though. Forbidden Friendship is a masterpiece.

If I go to a restaurant, and order a salad, because I want a salad, and they bring me a amazingly good BLT, regardless of how good the BLT is, it is NOT what I ordered. It is not what I wanted. No matter how much I may enjoy BLTs, it does not make it what I asked for. The movies are called 'How to Train Your Dragon', and they are NOT 'How to Train Your Dragon'. The named the dragon 'Toothless', and he is NOT Toothless (nor is he toothless, for the matter of that). It is not what it says it is. It is lying, and stealing. It is bad.
trexpaddock they never say that the movies are a complete remake of the book. It says “based on the book How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.” It’s a very loose adaptation of the book. They were never meant to be the exact same. But just because they’re different doesn’t mean that one is worse than the other. Cressida Cowell gave the director permission to use her books and she was even there to watch the final product of the movie. She was all on board with them using her ideas, so it’s not stealing. You should’ve known that they weren’t very similar when the first trailer released. I prefer the overall adaptation of the movie to the book.
@@kennedylareign The movie is NOT an adaptation of the book. It is 'in name only' at best. The moves are NOT based on the books. The only thing in common, is a few of the names, and even that to a limited degree. Cressida Cowell SOLD the movie rights to her books, and all they just used the name of the book(s), because it was popular, and did something totally different, tricking people into thinking it was a movie version of the popular book(s). By your logic, The Beatles are a 'loose adaptation' of the new testament, because some of the names are the same, and many of their songs are about love. If you want to see a movie version of a book, I could recommend 'Silence of the Lambs', if you want to see a decent adaptation, I would suggest 'Night Watch' & 'Day Watch'. They did an interesting job on 'Sin City', as a film version of an already visual story.
Just want to point out, Toothless's shots is actually super consistent over the movies and series, he never shoots more than 10 at any time, so it appears to be around that number. Although it's unknown if his Godzilla forms give him bonus shots. As a rule tho, the shot limit exists because they just don't have the sustenance to continuously fire, which makes sense, as magic doesn't exist in this world, they made it more realistic, as their shots recharge when they eat and such.

Fun fact: in Riders of Berk/Race to the Edge, there’s a episode where Toothless goes crazy because of an eel and starts randomly attacking everyone. Hiccup actually counts his shots and says that 9 is his top count. Also Ruffnut is the girl twin and Tuffnut is the boy, but it’s easy to confuse the two, especially when they get more similar in style later on. Great Review Krimson!
WillFanofMany Really? I haven’t seen the episode in a really long time but I remember thinking that it was strange Toothless had such a high count compared to the other dragons, and 6 seems to be relatively normal.
I love how you compared Toothless to cats because I actually had a cat who was exactly like Toothless in every way, in looks and personality. She even had to have her teeth removed (poor baby) making her ACTUALLY toothless!
Still disappointed that the film series didn’t see about two thirds of the main characters end up in slavery. Yes, that did happen in a kid’s book series. It was great.
More like 90% of the characters. They so easily could've chosen Alvin and Excellinor, or Madguts and Norbert as the villains yet they went with Drago/Draco and grimbeard. Smh.
I think the first movie is better than the first book, but the book series over all is much stronger than the movies. Each book has so much foreshadowing that is really only paid off after book 8. it’s such a sucker punch
I get why people think that, and I'd even possibly agree for the first half of it. However the stuff after the young heroes trial going disastorously wrong, the banishment and Hiccup facing off the Green Death is gold and gets you a glimpse of the heavier themes that'll be reoccuring across the series. I think the climax of Hiccup having to outmart the Green Death is more exciting than the fairly generic battle that happens with the Red Death.
the book has so much foreshadowing and symbolism, and it all builds up to the very end. hell, even the green death remembering hiccups name actually is explained in later books.
great review, as always. I do have two small complaints though: you cut out the part where Stoic saves Toothless from drowning, and showing off that Hiccup lost his foot (to Toothless if you believe one theory). The part with Stoic is, I feel, the key part of his arc. He had saved his son, the son he had disowned, and he goes back for Toothless, a creature that he had, just minutes earlier, called a devil. The foot thing is more symbolic. Not only does it make Toothless and Hiccup even more in sync with each other, as Hiccup's foot connects to the flight harness, the injury itself mimics the one Toothless got at the start of film.
Ok I've seen a lot of people say this so I just want to understand, how else would hiccup lose his foot other than toothless. Hiccup was going down head first into the inferno just outside toothless's reach, toothless had to grab something and the only thing that makes sense is hiccup's foot. Tell me your theory and how in the hell it makes sense
@@isdrakon9802 Hiccup had just been violently thrown don't his harness. Depending on how he was hit by the Red Death's tail he might have had his foot irreparably damaged (twisted, cut into, etc) by the stirrup when he was thrown loose. I believe Toothless did it, but you asked for another explanation.
One thing I liked about Hiccup in the books (and the movies) was how smart he was. He was a formidable opponent because he was clever and had just a bit of a ruthless streak. Plus the framing of the books being memoirs of a badass from when he was a scrawny child is pretty neat. But I LOVE the movies. They spark ENDLESS amounts of joy and nostalgia.

I adore the books and especially how surprisingly mature the overall message is. By the time you get to the last few books it's not just a kids series, it feels bleak at times but serious. Also Alvin The Treacherous is the best villain and you can't convince me otherwise. I'm not gonna spill my view on the movies because I'm keeping this comment positive, but I understand why people like them.
Sophie Marshall I have to say, hearing him say that the books are "very much aimed at kids" told me right away that he hadn't yet gotten anywhere near end of the series. ^_^;
Sophie Marshall true Alvin is a despicable villain but her mother Excellinor is the TRUE VILLAIN. In the later books Alvin is just a puppet. I do like the movies and can accept them as being good and different, but I will always like the books more. Too biased and nostalgic.
@@arrash4388 completely agree. Alvin doesn't even care about being king until his mother shows up, it's clear just how much she manipulates him in the later books. Dreamworks never had a villain so compelling or interesting in any of their HTTYD movies or the series.
Books are good but I really prefer the movie franchise. And the books ARE for the kids. That never changed. Also the creator apperantly really loved the movies.
Like how something happens to Snotlout. Alvin(I think that's his name) was an INCREDIBLY cruel character, from what I remember. There was also the bit with the Romans.
Some fun facts about this movie: one of the animators put a ball of duck tape on their pet cats tail for reference for how Toothless would react to a new tail in the Christmas special. And with the exception of the horned helmets, most of the viking clothing is pretty historically accurate
Disney and pixar usually only put out one animated film a year, occasionally two, but Dreamworks in the past would release up to four. Going for a quantity over quality thing, but they do have some titles under their belt that they put their damnedest into and the "How to train your dragon" franchise was one of them.
MadameTamma what the heck happened? I want to say they were bought out by universal, buuut they released home and several other bad in succession even before. (I technically count kung fu panda 3 partly only since it discontinued the dreamworks tradition of sequels being continuations of stories and more “retread the original mostly for nostalgia”)
I liked the added touch that movie Hiccup lost a foot in that final battle; kind of like karma paying him back for causing Toothless to lose a tail fin.
At the beginning, and really hoping the entire series is considered. The first book is fun, if a little childish, but books 9-12 are honestly the most emotional and breathtaking reading experiences I've ever had. Edit: I'm rather disappointed in his disappointment in the lack of romantic lead for Book Hiccup. I think Cowell does really well in having the main focus on platonic relationships, even though books five, eight, and ten play with romantic themes in Stoick the Vast, Valhallarama of the White Arms, Fishlegs, Humongously Hotshot the Hero, and Tantrum O'Ugerly. I guess if you squint, Hiccup and Fishlegs are the sort of main pairing, if only platonically. They fight for each other and have a deep emotional connection that's really explored through their (spoilers) separation and reunition in the tenth book. I doubt Camicazi is even into boys lol. Edit: I honestly think that having Toothless be this *all powerful Night Fury Alpha dragon* is a real disservice to his original. Book Toothless, while (spoilers) eventually being revealed to be an extremely young Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, is rather unremarkable. Movie Toothless has no flaws because Movie Toothless is not a character. He is a cat. Book Toothless has flaws because Book Toothless is a character who we begin to understand through the series. Edit: (spoilers) I think if he read the ninth book before doing this review, he would see the connections between Movie!Hiccup and Book!Hiccup the First. In the books, Hiccup the First is born into the first war between dragons and humans. The head of the dragons, Merciless, who is revealed to be the Green Death that Hiccup the Third killed in the first book, foresees that a boy named Hiccup will kill him. Merciless sends a ridiculously overpowered dragon called the Wodensfang to wipe out Hiccup the First and his entire village. Wodensfang is too big and gets injured in a tree and Hiccup the First cuts him down and nurses him back to health. Together, they stop the war between dragons and humans. Hiccup the First becomes the First King of the Wilderwest and ushers in a new age in which dragons and humans are blood-brothers. Familiar, much? If only movie!Toothless was named Wodensfang.
I have to disagree about Camicaze and Hiccup; I think the last two books - where she blushes when finding Hiccup at Darkheart but mostly when she beats off other girls who want to dance with Hiccup - show that she does have an interest in Hiccup. I always thought Cowell just left it really vague on purpose, maybe so readers could decide for themselves what happens? I do also wish we had some solid confirmation or explicit romance arc tho lol
I also love how one of the most iconic scenes (the first snout-touch) was a glitch. That little hesitation from Toothless was an animation error, but they kept it in since it looked so good.
17 yo, have read the book series all the way through at least 4 times and I still feel emotionally drained and want to cry every time I finish a read-through
David Crossler Same here. While I also love the movies and TV show(s), the books are In. A. Different. League. I think it's vital for anyone who reviews this particular adaptation to have read the entire series. You've got to make it to around book 8 before things start to get really intense.
That last epilogue though. It feels like you are in Hiccup's shoes and the way the world has changed so much just makes you want to cry from what was once. In my beginning is my end... There were dragons when I was a boy.
It's too bad the reviewer hadn't read the entire series before this review. The later books get much more serious, with less childish humor and a lot deeper (and darker!) themes. I totally recommend them as an entire series, and agree that the movies and shows are also excellent, in a COMPLETELY different way.
Honestly, the first book was inferior to the first movie. And the middle books were pretty boring too. It only gets interesting by the end. It's a very good kids book series, but as an adult there are only few enjoyable things about them I N M Y O P I N I O N

I read all the books when I was 10, and I still enjoy them not because of the humor, but because of the overall story. I think you just need to read the books a the right age in order to really get into them. These are the kind of books that stay with you forever.

Two things: 1. This seems to be one of those rare reviews where “the movie was better” 2. One of the details I always thought was a very interesting touch, (especially now that I’ve learned thanks for this review that it was a detail that wasn’t in the book) that Toothless and Hiccup become amputees. For Toothless, it was A method that explained why the two needed to work together, but for Hiccup it becomes another thing that bonds them together.
The first book is certainly inferior to the film, but I'd say I enjoy the book series more. The middle books are a little boring, though, and make good kids books but aren't exactly as high quality as the first and last three.

When I was little I was *OBSESSED* with the how to train your dragon books! I had every single one! And I still do. The reason I loved them so much, was because the books started off immature and goofy, but as I got older, the books seemed to grow up with me, getting darker humor, and more dramatic story lines. I feel like this kept me super interested, and I was always super excited to buy the next book! In short I love them more than the movies, because I'm super biased

I take it you've seen some of the animated series? I personally love it, most other movies would have it be like a cash grab, but this world was one I wanted to see more of. Would actually be interested in you doing a little comparison episode on the things they took or were inspired by the book series. Really interesting seeing their take on Alvin and the tribe of Outcasts, or the Berserkers and their chief. Also love the little homage naming a species of dragons after book Snoutlout's hunting dragon, Fireworm.
The best part of this was definitely the slowly multiplying dragon plushies, culminating in the “sexy beast” Toothless t-shirt and little night fury ears.
A good review if you ask me, and more thorough than some of the other reviews on YT. However, there are some things I would like to point out. SPOILER ALERT FOR THE BOOKS 1- 3:50 They steal newborn dragon babies, not eggs. 2- 4:46 Spitelout's name in the books is Baggybum the Beerbelly (Stoick's younger brother). Don't really know why I'm pointing this put, but I am! 3- 7:01 I’m sorry but Fishlegs is nothing like in the books. Let’s start with the most obvious reason; the physique. He has changed 180 degrees from the scrawny thin, asthmatic, allergic kid who’s only friend is hiccup (and later camicazi) through thick and thin, to a 2m by 2m walking block that spends more time with Snotlout and the others (something unimaginable for book Fishlegs), than with hiccup. If anything, he is one of the characters that changed the most. 4- 8:15 Actually you can clearly see in the latter books that Camicazi has a soft (romantic/crush) spot for Hiccup and while it isn’t 100% certain whether or not they got together in the end, they most likely did. It’s kinda like Phineas and Isabella’s relationship. She has a crush on Hiccup, but is too proud to openly admit it, while Hiccup is mostly oblivious due to the many stressful and dangerous situations he is being put in. 5- 12:00 Toothless is toothless because he is a baby Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, and will take him many, many years to reach his full size. 6- 12:45 So far. For there will be much better, bigger, more powerful dragons to come in literature. You just have to patient. This may or may not have something to do with me wanting to write a book series. 7- 17:09 While I do understand where you're coming from, this was before they decided to make the sequels that included Valkyrie. It is from one of the books where Valhallarama's (hiccup’s mum in the books) chest size is much bigger, thus the breastplates can be used as helmets. Side note, the reason she isn’t around in the books is vastly different than in the movies, but no less selfish if you ask me. Stoick also never died in the books, but a few other characters did. 8- 26:13 Excuse me? The book kills off toothless (or sends him in a very deep coma), and so all the vikings give him a proper viking funeral. How is that not as emotional as this? Different mediums perhaps but no less impactful. 9- Yes, while the adaptation is not very faithful at all to the books, it still works as a very enjoyable movie. I am hoping a true adaptation is made of the series, but this one still has the heart and passion as the books had so 2/5 seems a bit harsh. 10- Lastly, yes, of course the books are better, but they were a massive part of my childhood and to this very day I can’t read a single line from any of them without it bringing a smile to my face. I would recommend them to children and adults alike, as long as you enjoy reading children’s book.
Yeah but when stoic was yelling at Hiccup you forgot to mention that bit of character when Stoic stumbled back after slamming the door, regretting what he said.
Important to note that as the series goes on, the tone shifts as Hiccup grows up. The final four books have a highly connected plot that's far more darker and mature.
I really don't like how most fans of just the movies don't read the whole book series, they get so amazing later on, and it's so unfair to judge the book series without even reading them fully
If i remember correctly, at least in movies, the second movie introduced the alpha concept, a dragon who commands other dragons, either protects them or rules them... So i guess this dragon van be called alpha
The books are amazing, they're not immature they're just whimsical, and they mature as they go on. The films basically have nothing to do with them except names and vague setting. But the films are still great fun which is pobably better than Dreamworks making a terrible adapatation which is what most studios seem to end up happening.

the humor can be pretty immature, though it works for the book in a highly faithful adaptation to screen it wouldn't work so well because the film rating system would not be happy with all of that in a kids film
im rather proud to say that i have all 12 books (im pretty sure it’s 12), and ive loved those stories since i was young. spoiler: i still cant get over snotlout’s death. i love how even though ive reread the 11th novel multiple times i still have that voice in my head screaming at them to hurry up to escape, instead of quabbling. the story really has that ability to captivate its audiences, and its a shame that i cannot really find another novel series that hooked onto me as much.
My son is ten we've read, listened, laughed, loved and (me anyway) cried. Snotlout's character arc broke my heart. Fishleg's journey... Ps. Fishleg's is related to Hiccup. Via Grimbeard's evil son...word of a Treacherous. 😉
"Which is a poor argument because you can train cats if you know what you are doing" *demonstrates calling a cat via clicks* I've trained my cat to come to a table/raised location by clicking my fingers, Beg by wiggling my fingers above her, and kiss when I lean in for one. I've never been able to get her motivated through treats, so everything has been learned through petting as a reward.
I read the book as a child and absolutely adores it and then i watched the movies years later. I adore both but i recognize the extreme changes and i like them as seperate things, the movies to me are not an adaptation but a reimagining in a different universe with different characters who just happen to bear the same name.
The third and final movie, I gotta admit, had me in tears cause they were one of my favorite small childhood movies and I have some nice memories cause of them. The end of the book series also had me in tears because who doesn’t hate finishing a book/book series?

Something worth noting about how Hiccup wound up with toothless: He originally grabbed a different dragon but when he Fishlegs started saying he didn't have a dragon he handed over his basket and ran back in, thereby getting his little brat, Toothless.
I'm so glad you decided to review How to Train Your Dragon. Personally, I never read the books but I grew up with the movies and they hold a very dear place in my heart. Seeing someone talk about them and how it made them feel reminds me of the first time I watched the movies. It makes me really happy seeing you talk about something I love. I definitely cried at least once in every movie. I rarely cry after watching the first time, but these movies always seem to bring a tear to my eyes.
i like the movie fight more because it shows just how smart hiccup is. instead of a head on doomed attack, he takes the rd into a disadvantaged area to use tls strengths, stealth and precision.
What makes Toothless even more cute is the fact that he's created by the same guy who created Stitch

In the second book, he loses his right arm, which is how he discovers that he's actually left-handed. His arm gets reattached at the end.
The movies strike me less as an adaptation, and more a full blown reimagining that basically just barrows the world and concepts. Not that that's exactly a bad thing. The original FMA series stops having any similarities to the manga after Dr. Marco appears.
Well, in case of FMA, that was only because they didn't have anymore material from the manga to go off of, since that adaptation had caught up with it. HTTYD is just a full blown reimagining.

It would be better to grade it on how the world is used in comparision to the original. To put a fine put on it, FMA did good. Akame ga Kill fell out a cliff and smashed its head open like a water melon 600 feet bellow. HTTYD did good reimaging the world. Deathflix fell off a cliff and resembled a dropped melon too.

Eh, for me, it doesn't matter at all how close the adaption is to the original, as long as it's good. I like FMAB better too, but purely because after watching the 2003 adaption, I was left feeling depressed and unsatisfied. I'm a sucker for happy endings :(
Anyway, comparing the two is like apples to oranges. Both are very different, and have very different themes. Imo, I think everyone should watch both and treat it like the full package.
@@rattlinbones Oh, don't get me wrong. FMAB blows the original FMA out of the water in every possible way. I vastly prefer it. My point is that the original anime, at least for me, still did a really good job adapting the world and characters for its own uses. It took the ground work laid out by Hiromu Arakawa and built well on it in a very different, but creative way.

He did the same with Broadchurch, where he plays a detective investigating a murder in a small village. I definitely recommend it.
Also Scrooge on the new Ducktales although I think he alters his pitch a bit.

In fact before he was the 10th Doctor he had a bit role in Scream Of The Shalka, what would have been the 9th Doctor via animated web series if not for Russel T. Davies, because he was recording in the same building and was a huge fan. You can hear him when the Shalka invade the base.
This franchise was a gift. I still can’t believe it has ended. The soundtrack has to be my favorite part of the series though. Forbidden Friendship is a masterpiece.

trexpaddock they never say that the movies are a complete remake of the book. It says “based on the book How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.” It’s a very loose adaptation of the book. They were never meant to be the exact same. But just because they’re different doesn’t mean that one is worse than the other. Cressida Cowell gave the director permission to use her books and she was even there to watch the final product of the movie. She was all on board with them using her ideas, so it’s not stealing. You should’ve known that they weren’t very similar when the first trailer released.
I prefer the overall adaptation of the movie to the book.

The moves are NOT based on the books. The only thing in common, is a few of the names, and even that to a limited degree.
Cressida Cowell SOLD the movie rights to her books, and all they just used the name of the book(s), because it was popular, and did something totally different, tricking people into thinking it was a movie version of the popular book(s).
By your logic, The Beatles are a 'loose adaptation' of the new testament, because some of the names are the same, and many of their songs are about love.
If you want to see a movie version of a book, I could recommend 'Silence of the Lambs', if you want to see a decent adaptation, I would suggest 'Night Watch' & 'Day Watch'. They did an interesting job on 'Sin City', as a film version of an already visual story.
Just want to point out, Toothless's shots is actually super consistent over the movies and series, he never shoots more than 10 at any time, so it appears to be around that number. Although it's unknown if his Godzilla forms give him bonus shots.
As a rule tho, the shot limit exists because they just don't have the sustenance to continuously fire, which makes sense, as magic doesn't exist in this world, they made it more realistic, as their shots recharge when they eat and such.

Fun fact: in Riders of Berk/Race to the Edge, there’s a episode where Toothless goes crazy because of an eel and starts randomly attacking everyone. Hiccup actually counts his shots and says that 9 is his top count.
Also Ruffnut is the girl twin and Tuffnut is the boy, but it’s easy to confuse the two, especially when they get more similar in style later on.

I think the first movie is better than the first book, but the book series over all is much stronger than the movies.
Each book has so much foreshadowing that is really only paid off after book 8. it’s such a sucker punch
I get why people think that, and I'd even possibly agree for the first half of it.
However the stuff after the young heroes trial going disastorously wrong, the banishment and Hiccup facing off the Green Death is gold and gets you a glimpse of the heavier themes that'll be reoccuring across the series. I think the climax of Hiccup having to outmart the Green Death is more exciting than the fairly generic battle that happens with the Red Death.
Yes, high investment, high reward.

great review, as always. I do have two small complaints though: you cut out the part where Stoic saves Toothless from drowning, and showing off that Hiccup lost his foot (to Toothless if you believe one theory).
The part with Stoic is, I feel, the key part of his arc. He had saved his son, the son he had disowned, and he goes back for Toothless, a creature that he had, just minutes earlier, called a devil.
The foot thing is more symbolic. Not only does it make Toothless and Hiccup even more in sync with each other, as Hiccup's foot connects to the flight harness, the injury itself mimics the one Toothless got at the start of film.
And I wish he brought up the fact that Toothless was created by the same man who created Stitch

Hiccup was going down head first into the inferno just outside toothless's reach, toothless had to grab something and the only thing that makes sense is hiccup's foot. Depending on how he was hit by the Red Death's tail he might have had his foot irreparably damaged (twisted, cut into, etc) by the stirrup when he was thrown loose.

One thing I liked about Hiccup in the books (and the movies) was how smart he was. He was a formidable opponent because he was clever and had just a bit of a ruthless streak. Plus the framing of the books being memoirs of a badass from when he was a scrawny child is pretty neat. But I LOVE the movies. They spark ENDLESS amounts of joy and nostalgia.
One of the Villains in the TV series consistently focused on Hiccup BECAUSE he was the brains.

I adore the books and especially how surprisingly mature the overall message is. By the time you get to the last few books it's not just a kids series, it feels bleak at times but serious. Also Alvin The Treacherous is the best villain and you can't convince me otherwise. I'm not gonna spill my view on the movies because I'm keeping this comment positive, but I understand why people like them.
Sophie Marshall I have to say, hearing him say that the books are "very much aimed at kids" told me right away that he hadn't yet gotten anywhere near end of the series. ^_^;

Sophie Marshall true Alvin is a despicable villain but her mother Excellinor is the TRUE VILLAIN. In the later books Alvin is just a puppet. I do like the movies and can accept them as being good and different, but I will always like the books more. Too biased and nostalgic.
@@arrash4388 completely agree. Alvin doesn't even care about being king until his mother shows up, it's clear just how much she manipulates him in the later books. Dreamworks never had a villain so compelling or interesting in any of their HTTYD movies or the series.

Some fun facts about this movie: one of the animators put a ball of duck tape on their pet cats tail for reference for how Toothless would react to a new tail in the Christmas special.
And with the exception of the horned helmets, most of the viking clothing is pretty historically accurate

Disney and pixar usually only put out one animated film a year, occasionally two, but Dreamworks in the past would release up to four. Going for a quantity over quality thing, but they do have some titles under their belt that they put their damnedest into and the "How to train your dragon" franchise was one of them.
MadameTamma what the heck happened? I want to say they were bought out by universal, buuut they released home and several other bad in succession even before. (I technically count kung fu panda 3 partly only since it discontinued the dreamworks tradition of sequels being continuations of stories and more “retread the original mostly for nostalgia”)
I liked the added touch that movie Hiccup lost a foot in that final battle; kind of like karma paying him back for causing Toothless to lose a tail fin.
At the beginning, and really hoping the entire series is considered. The first book is fun, if a little childish, but books 9-12 are honestly the most emotional and breathtaking reading experiences I've ever had.
Edit: I'm rather disappointed in his disappointment in the lack of romantic lead for Book Hiccup. I think Cowell does really well in having the main focus on platonic relationships, even though books five, eight, and ten play with romantic themes in Stoick the Vast, Valhallarama of the White Arms, Fishlegs, Humongously Hotshot the Hero, and Tantrum O'Ugerly. I guess if you squint, Hiccup and Fishlegs are the sort of main pairing, if only platonically. They fight for each other and have a deep emotional connection that's really explored through their (spoilers) separation and reunition in the tenth book. I doubt Camicazi is even into boys lol.
Edit: I honestly think that having Toothless be this *all powerful Night Fury Alpha dragon* is a real disservice to his original. Book Toothless, while (spoilers) eventually being revealed to be an extremely young Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, is rather unremarkable. Movie Toothless has no flaws because Movie Toothless is not a character. He is a cat. Book Toothless has flaws because Book Toothless is a character who we begin to understand through the series.
Edit: (spoilers) I think if he read the ninth book before doing this review, he would see the connections between Movie!Hiccup and Book!Hiccup the First. In the books, Hiccup the First is born into the first war between dragons and humans. The head of the dragons, Merciless, who is revealed to be the Green Death that Hiccup the Third killed in the first book, foresees that a boy named Hiccup will kill him. Merciless sends a ridiculously overpowered dragon called the Wodensfang to wipe out Hiccup the First and his entire village. Wodensfang is too big and gets injured in a tree and Hiccup the First cuts him down and nurses him back to health. Together, they stop the war between dragons and humans. Hiccup the First becomes the First King of the Wilderwest and ushers in a new age in which dragons and humans are blood-brothers. Familiar, much? If only movie!Toothless was named Wodensfang.
I have to disagree about Camicaze and Hiccup; I think the last two books - where she blushes when finding Hiccup at Darkheart but mostly when she beats off other girls who want to dance with Hiccup - show that she does have an interest in Hiccup. I always thought Cowell just left it really vague on purpose, maybe so readers could decide for themselves what happens? I do also wish we had some solid confirmation or explicit romance arc tho lol

17 yo, have read the book series all the way through at least 4 times and I still feel emotionally drained and want to cry every time I finish a read-through
David Crossler Same here. While I also love the movies and TV show(s), the books are In. A. Different. League. I think it's vital for anyone who reviews this particular adaptation to have read the entire series. You've got to make it to around book 8 before things start to get really intense.
That last epilogue though. It feels like you are in Hiccup's shoes and the way the world has changed so much just makes you want to cry from what was once. In my beginning is my end... There were dragons when I was a boy.

It's too bad the reviewer hadn't read the entire series before this review. The later books get much more serious, with less childish humor and a lot deeper (and darker!) themes. I totally recommend them as an entire series, and agree that the movies and shows are also excellent, in a COMPLETELY different way.
Honestly, the first book was inferior to the first movie. And the middle books were pretty boring too. It only gets interesting by the end. It's a very good kids book series, but as an adult there are only few enjoyable things about them

Two things:
1. This seems to be one of those rare reviews where “the movie was better”
2. One of the details I always thought was a very interesting touch, (especially now that I’ve learned thanks for this review that it was a detail that wasn’t in the book) that Toothless and Hiccup become amputees. For Toothless, it was A method that explained why the two needed to work together, but for Hiccup it becomes another thing that bonds them together.
The first book is certainly inferior to the film, but I'd say I enjoy the book series more. The middle books are a little boring, though, and make good kids books but aren't exactly as high quality as the first and last three.

When I was little I was *OBSESSED* with the how to train your dragon books! I had every single one! And I still do. The reason I loved them so much, was because the books started off immature and goofy, but as I got older, the books seemed to grow up with me, getting darker humor, and more dramatic story lines. I feel like this kept me super interested, and I was always super excited to buy the next book! In short I love them more than the movies, because I'm super biased

I take it you've seen some of the animated series? I personally love it, most other movies would have it be like a cash grab, but this world was one I wanted to see more of.
Would actually be interested in you doing a little comparison episode on the things they took or were inspired by the book series. Really interesting seeing their take on Alvin and the tribe of Outcasts, or the Berserkers and their chief. Also love the little homage naming a species of dragons after book Snoutlout's hunting dragon, Fireworm.

The best part of this was definitely the slowly multiplying dragon plushies, culminating in the “sexy beast” Toothless t-shirt and little night fury ears.
A good review if you ask me, and more thorough than some of the other reviews on YT. However, there are some things I would like to point out.
SPOILER ALERT FOR THE BOOKS
1- 3:50 They steal newborn dragon babies, not eggs.
2- 4:46 Spitelout's name in the books is Baggybum the Beerbelly (Stoick's younger brother). Don't really know why I'm pointing this put, but I am!
3- 7:01 I’m sorry but Fishlegs is nothing like in the books. Let’s start with the most obvious reason; the physique. He has changed 180 degrees from the scrawny thin, asthmatic, allergic kid who’s only friend is hiccup (and later camicazi) through thick and thin, to a 2m by 2m walking block that spends more time with Snotlout and the others (something unimaginable for book Fishlegs), than with hiccup. If anything, he is one of the characters that changed the most.
4- 8:15 Actually you can clearly see in the latter books that Camicazi has a soft (romantic/crush) spot for Hiccup and while it isn’t 100% certain whether or not they got together in the end, they most likely did. It’s kinda like Phineas and Isabella’s relationship. She has a crush on Hiccup, but is too proud to openly admit it, while Hiccup is mostly oblivious due to the many stressful and dangerous situations he is being put in.
5- 12:00 Toothless is toothless because he is a baby Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, and will take him many, many years to reach his full size.
6- 12:45 So far. For there will be much better, bigger, more powerful dragons to come in literature. You just have to patient. This may or may not have something to do with me wanting to write a book series.
7- 17:09 While I do understand where you're coming from, this was before they decided to make the sequels that included Valkyrie. It is from one of the books where Valhallarama's (hiccup’s mum in the books) chest size is much bigger, thus the breastplates can be used as helmets. Side note, the reason she isn’t around in the books is vastly different than in the movies, but no less selfish if you ask me. Stoick also never died in the books, but a few other characters did.
8- 26:13 Excuse me? The book kills off toothless (or sends him in a very deep coma), and so all the vikings give him a proper viking funeral. How is that not as emotional as this? Different mediums perhaps but no less impactful.
9- Yes, while the adaptation is not very faithful at all to the books, it still works as a very enjoyable movie. I am hoping a true adaptation is made of the series, but this one still has the heart and passion as the books had so 2/5 seems a bit harsh.
10- Lastly, yes, of course the books are better, but they were a massive part of my childhood and to this very day I can’t read a single line from any of them without it bringing a smile to my face. I would recommend them to children and adults alike, as long as you enjoy reading children’s book.

Yeah but when stoic was yelling at Hiccup you forgot to mention that bit of character when Stoic stumbled back after slamming the door, regretting what he said.
Important to note that as the series goes on, the tone shifts as Hiccup grows up. The final four books have a highly connected plot that's far more darker and mature.
I say the final five books, since the whole shenanigans starts in the berserk forest

Man these books where my childhood, I adored them as a kid like most people enjoyed Harry Potter at the same age.
Oh I just kept loving those twists towards the end. Showed how well-thought Cressida Cowell's story was.
I really don't like how most fans of just the movies don't read the whole book series, they get so amazing later on, and it's so unfair to judge the book series without even reading them fully

I never thought what was missing from the book was better was krimson playing with plushies.
The books are amazing, they're not immature they're just whimsical, and they mature as they go on. The films basically have nothing to do with them except names and vague setting. But the films are still great fun which is pobably better than Dreamworks making a terrible adapatation which is what most studios seem to end up happening.
Yeah, the books are okay not really my thing but I get why people like them, I consider the movies to be a completely new series that are absolutely perfect

in a highly faithful adaptation to screen it wouldn't work so well because the film rating system would not be happy with all of that in a kids film
im rather proud to say that i have all 12 books (im pretty sure it’s 12), and ive loved those stories since i was young. spoiler:
i still cant get over snotlout’s death. i love how even though ive reread the 11th novel multiple times i still have that voice in my head screaming at them to hurry up to escape, instead of quabbling.
the story really has that ability to captivate its audiences, and its a shame that i cannot really find another novel series that hooked onto me as much.
That scene makes me cry every. Single. Time.
My son is ten we've read, listened, laughed, loved and (me anyway) cried. Snotlout's character arc broke my heart. Fishleg's journey... Ps. Fishleg's is related to Hiccup. Via Grimbeard's evil son...word of a Treacherous. 😉

I've trained my cat to come to a table/raised location by clicking my fingers, Beg by wiggling my fingers above her, and kiss when I lean in for one. I've never been able to get her motivated through treats, so everything has been learned through petting as a reward.

I read the book as a child and absolutely adores it and then i watched the movies years later. I adore both but i recognize the extreme changes and i like them as seperate things, the movies to me are not an adaptation but a reimagining in a different universe with different characters who just happen to bear the same name.
Yeah, the movies are loosely based off of the books and not an adaptation :b I feel like people forget that while comparing them
To be honest they’re not the same thing I just think of them as different universes with a few similarities

The third and final movie, I gotta admit, had me in tears cause they were one of my favorite small childhood movies and I have some nice memories cause of them. The end of the book series also had me in tears because who doesn’t hate finishing a book/book series?

Something worth noting about how Hiccup wound up with toothless: He originally grabbed a different dragon but when he Fishlegs started saying he didn't have a dragon he handed over his basket and ran back in, thereby getting his little brat, Toothless.
I can't have been the only one who yelled 'Brisingr' whenever he lit his sword in the third film.

I'm so glad you decided to review How to Train Your Dragon. Personally, I never read the books but I grew up with the movies and they hold a very dear place in my heart. Seeing someone talk about them and how it made them feel reminds me of the first time I watched the movies. It makes me really happy seeing you talk about something I love.
I definitely cried at least once in every movie. I rarely cry after watching the first time, but these movies always seem to bring a tear to my eyes.
i like the movie fight more because it shows just how smart hiccup is. instead of a head on doomed attack, he takes the rd into a disadvantaged area to use tls strengths, stealth and precision.
