However the team went on a crazy run, making it out of the group stage & beating Japan & Senegal to get a semifinal with Brazil which they barely lost. They then beat South Korea in the 3rd/4th place game & the Turkish fans were absolutely ecstatic. Even though airport security knew that there would be a large crowd to greet the team when they returned home, they did not anticipate that nearly 200,000 people would be there. In fact there were so many people that all commercial flights into & out of Istanbul's airport were either significantly delayed or had to be rerouted to the smaller airport on the Asian side of the city. Like in this story, the Turkish fans started throwing bottles, rocks & flares at the plane. Again, Matt, as has been stated ad nauseam by countless commentators, writers, fans and analysts, that's why you play the games and sometimes even the biggest, unexpected upsets can occur. Lets be honest, too even if New England had only made 3 post-season appearances until 1985 miracle run, for the previous decade since 1976, they had only one losing season (an atrocious, God-awful 2-14 campaign in 1981) they had enjoyed 5 consecutive winning seasons from 1976-80, 82, a .500 8-8 season in 1983, another 9-7 season in 1984. The reason why they didn't make more playoffs more back then was due often to bad luck, being in one of NFL's then-toughest divisions in the old AFC East with competitive Bills and Jets teams of the late 70's/early 80's, and the NFL only having a 5-team playoff seeding back then. You have quite a few notable AFC/NFC teams from mid-70's to even the late 80's who finished with 10-6, 9-7, or even 11-5 with 1985 Denver Broncos who missed the post-season.
@@matthewdaley746unquestionably? Lmao, they teams played in the regular season and the Dolphins won convincingly. Are you one of those people who don't think what happens on the field matters?
@@GR-bn3xj "convincingly". Marino bounced a TD pass off of Dan Hampton's helmet, Steve Fuller started for the Bears, 4 yard TD drive off of a blocked punt, the Bears were admittedly hungover. A Dolphins-Bears SB wouldn't have turned out much different. The Patriots were a superior team to the Dolphins at every position except QB and receivers.
@fabioburgos878 you can make up all the reasons, but the simple fact is miami beat them by 2 TDs and were in control of the whole game. Would they beat them again the SB? I don't know. But it sure would have been a better game than the one we got, if only for the fact it would be hard to be worse. I think Miami would have put up a decent game, you don't. I can't convince you of that, but I do think the vast majority of people wanted to see the dolphins in the SB and I don't think they would have gotten beaten by 5 TDs.
I was an employee at the airport,(a rental car company) at the time and was there that night, while it was wild and a tiny bit destructive, I never got the impression anyone was in danger or fearing for their safety. The only real casualty I recall was the flimsy fence that separated us from the plane, it died a quick death as soon as the airplane came to a halt. Before the Pats arrived it was a party atmosphere with singing and, yeah, lotsa beer. Squish the Fish!
I remember as a kid going with my parents that night in Miami. I wasn't into football yet and my dad buying me a sweater that i still have. Dolphins AFC champions they were selling them cheap because they lost the game and i remember that night the streets were very wet later seeing that it rained in that game I think thats why they llost.
I noticed in the 1985 and 1986 AFC Championship games they had both teams' names in each end zone. This one and the next year in Cleveland between Cleveland and Denver
This is one of the biggest shockers ever. Theres no way miami should have lost this. And definitely would have given the Bears a way better game. Im still pissed abt this game
Wow! This Game made me SICK! I couldn't & still can't believe what I saw in 2 weeks in Succession: Both the Raiders: 12 & 4 Dolphins 11 & 5 were Far Superior Teams to the 1985 Pats & Both Lost by Lost by Turning the Ball over 6 TIMES! I suspected those Games were Rigged & Still do, because the Exact Amount of Turn Overs Committed by both Teams 1 Game after another is nearly a Statistical Impossibility!
The game was rigged! Too many turnovers & Marino looked like scrub compared to his actual playing abilities & not too mention the Dolphins just weeks before this Chamionship game looked like the best team in the NFL as they beat the Bears & Tony Eason & the Patriots weren't the better team & even if it weren't rigged then it's also forgotten that the Dolphins had many great starting players hurt form the previous playoff game against the Cleveland Browns coming back from a 20-0 game & won it 24-20! No Mark Clayton & no middle linebacker & the Patriots new this & had Craig James run the ball up the middle & Tony Eason choked bigtime in the Superbowl later! That game was a Farce & I am convinced that these games especially the post season games are possibly rigged but anyways that game was the worst game ever in my childhood memories

What's so funny Is I watched this right before the video was posted. I had no clue he was gonna post this. The rain in miami had a big effect on the dolphins. In my opinion. That miami team started 5-4 i believe and had won 7 in a row. It was on fire. I still hate that it denied the super bowl that everyone wanted
I bet that plane landing at 2:10 incident hurt their momentum. After beating the Jets Raiders and Dolphins in the playoffs , all 3 on the road, one would think they might have given the Bears more of a challenge rather than losing 46-10
It should have been the Dolphins vs Bears in that Super Bowl. The former were the only team that SHUT the mouths of that friggin big mouthed team in one of Dan Marino's greatest moments: th-cam.com/video/vW5Rnh53Hgw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3POLnrDc6p78fNzw
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how the Browns went through something similar after winning in Houston in 1980.
The Patriots had no business being in the Super Bowl that year. They got their butts handed to them by the Bears, while Miami CLEARLY would have been the better matchup. Most of us want to see a close Super Bowl, NOT a blowout. And the Dolphins gave that game to the Patriots as if it were a Christmas present. Ridiculous !!
The Dolphins were, merely, keeping up the curse of the WFL, Joe Robbie was, dirt-cheap, and, the, Dynasty, ended when, Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and, Jim Kiick, all decided that bailing for a doomed league was appropriate, additionally, he was a lobbyist for, Big Tobacco, who attempted to stop legislation designed at limiting advertisement, he really only was prevented from becoming, Hugh Culverhouse, South, by, 1970-1974, totally a nasty reign of error, period.
As a 53 year Pat's fan and 26 year season ticket holder, I remember this one!! Squish the Fish!! But Berry the Bears was never going to happen. Once went to a game at Foxboro Stadium where they arrested so many fans the paddy wagons were full and the extra perps were handcuffed to the chain link fences outside the concourse. You didn't take women and children to Foxboro Stadium.
Yet in spite of all its deficiencies, clear and obvious design flaws, faulty, flawed construction lay-out, plus the endless, ongoing clogged, backed-up toilets and a chronic lack of hot water for tired, worn-down players after games, Foxboro Stadium still managed to last 31 seasons as an NFL stadium and was where two generations of Pats.fans witnessed their team make two SB appearances. Not a bad run for a $2.8 million, hastily-built complex that was built before the 1971 season in less then 3-4 months and was the home field for a former original AFL team that played in 4-5 different stadiums in its first decade of existence.
That 85-86 pats team was the winningest team in nfl history. What you say? I must be crazy, right? What i mean is that Pats team was riding something like a 13 game POINTSPREAD WINNING STREAK all the way into the super bowl. Of course the streak ended as they got crushed by bears. But anyone could have gotten rich from that team.
I understand why the Patriots' fans were excited, but they were doing way too much. As for the Super Bowl XX matchup, the Bears caught a break with the Dolphins going down.
I don’t think anyone would have stopped Chicago in Super Bowl XX. The fact the Pats actually scored 10 points was a feat in itself since they shutout the Rams and Giants in the NFC side of the playoffs.
From, 1985-1988, every Champion caught a significant break, the, 1985 Bears didn't play the Dolphins, the, 1986 Giants didn't play the Bears, the, 1987 Washington franchise didn't play the 49ers, and, the, 1988 49ers didn't have to play Walter Payton.
@joshuashamai2876 If anything, that Game showed why they were never going to be a, Dynasty, Jim McMahon made a bunch of truly horrible gaffes, that, fortunately, resulted in zero points, it only took one season for, "The Hogs," to totally expose them, and, by the 1989 season, they were completely done.
@johnwhite5485 Those Raiders, were very lucky that they got one last SB, they never really recovered from the unexpected retirement of Ted Hendricks, and, the AFC, sadly, went over a decade before winning another SB.
Eason only had 12 pass attempts that game but completed 10 passes for 3 TDs. Those 255 rushing yards the Patriots had this game definitely helped. The 1985 playoffs were the first I remember watching as a kid. That run the Patriots had in the playoffs was amazing. Also, the 11-5 Broncos missed the playoffs that season.
@@Rockhound6165 Yes. Only 5 teams made the playoffs then. The Browns made it by winning their division. What's interesting is if the Broncos had went 12-4 then it would have knocked the Patriots out of the playoffs. I also believe that the Patriots victory over the Raiders the previous week in the playoffs might have been a bigger upset than beating the Dolphins.
Are you asking if Bledsoe replaced Eason as the starter? No, Eason's last year in NE was '88 and he'd been replaced by Grogan then, who then turned it over to Hugh Millen.
I was very young and didn't fully appreciate this march to the big game by my hometown team. So in retrospect, knowing I'd be celebrating Super Bowls during most of my adult life, I would have been fine giving this one up so the American people could have had a great storyline with Marino vs the Bears D. The Patriots really lucked out with the weather, as it neutralized Marino throwing with a wet ball and emphasized the strong Pats run game.
In that same vein, few things get my goat more than, fair-weather, fans, early during the 2005 season, the Patriots were, clearly, well on their way to their first home loss in three years, and, despite, a strict policy barring, re-entry, the Game was barely, half-finished, and, you could see their, "loyal," fans streaming up the flights of steps, and, down, the exit ramps, it was horrifically disgusting, it was, that's that.

@adamdorgant9454 History's, short, though, unquestionably.
Wonder how a bears / dolphins Super Bowl woulda been? NFL musta been pissed
Myles jack wasn't down. Refs rigged it again. This franchise is so lucky it's rediculous. See ford, tuck rule, Marlon mcree I mean it's uncanny
People in Boston drunk?!?! No way! What could go wrong?! Lol!🎉😂
I still haven't recovered from this game, and I expect that I never will.
The cry in NE was "Squish the fish!"
Thank you for using a catch made by Clarence Weathers in your highlight video. That was still the most awesome video you ever made.
The game in 1966 was played in Tampa as Fenway Park was not available. The college stadiums weren’t available either.
The fans gave the Patriots a tougher time then the Dolphins did.
For a long time Dolfan, I felt this game was worse than losing to San Fran in SB XIX
As a Dolphins fan this game still hurts 🤕
This is one of the biggest shockers ever. Theres no way miami should have lost this. And definitely would have given the Bears a way better game. Im still pissed abt this game
My name is John Munro… and I am not a Patriots fan! Lol!
Raiders and Dolphins was the AFC champion game we all thought was gonna happen
Pats fan: "this here is the front landing wheel of the plane returned from Miami"
More Orange Bowl shenanigans-in about a year's time you had the Orange Bowl game with the fireworks mishap, the game against Tampa where the stands collapsed and this. Never mind all the craziness in earlier years..
Now i gotta watch this game again. Luckily its been posted up on youtube
After beating the Jets Raiders and Dolphins in the playoffs , all 3 on the road, one would think they might have given the Bears more of a challenge rather than losing 46-10
the game that deprived the world of what would have been the greatest super bowl ever.
In 1985, everyone wanted to see The Bears against The Raiders, in The Superbowl.
The Original Squish the Fish game.
I was there
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how the Browns went through something similar after winning in Houston in 1980.
I went to that game… I don’t recall any fights or riots inside or outside the stadium
Wasn’t at the stadium
Getting thru the gates and storming the plane this was definitely before TSA
Will you do highpoint on the 25th?
Yep! 2 PM ET
Heck I'll take this game any day vs the one against Jville in playoffs in 99.
Need to edit the voice dialog. This was 1985 not 1986 mentioned several times.
This is a great example of why Dan Marino was very overrated. I remember watching this game as a 10 year old.
0:18 RIP Greg Gumbel
Those damned Philadelphia fans! Oh, wait.
No LEGIT SB TITLES New England Patriots
Ironically, Florida looks a lot like Russia these days.
Even central Florida, unquestionably.
@joshuashamai2876 If anything, that Game showed why they were never going to be a, Dynasty, Jim McMahon made a bunch of truly horrible gaffes, that, fortunately, resulted in zero points, it only took one season for, "The Hogs," to totally expose them, and, by the 1989 season, they were completely done.
and the Raiders a week earlier
@johnwhite5485 Those Raiders, were very lucky that they got one last SB, they never really recovered from the unexpected retirement of Ted Hendricks, and, the AFC, sadly, went over a decade before winning another SB.
The fact that Dan Marino was bested by Tony Eason in the AFC title game irrevocably damages his legacy.
@ and the 8-8 Browns made it and nearly upset the Dolphins.
Am I correct in believing that you're now going to do a video about the game in Tampa in 1969?
Maybe at some point
Eason's probably more suited for today's game.
Great point. He could throw but didn’t do well with the punishment a QB faced in that era.
Have the Dolphins been back to a AFC Championship game since?
Yes, they hosted the Buffalo Bills in January 1993 and lost 29-10.
@dcaa62817 Thurman Thomas and the stupid shuttle pass all game. That game makes me mad, but the 85 loss made me sick.
Where did Drew Bledsoe stand, though? Did he replace Tony Eason or someone else did?
Squish the fish!
What Denver Broncos won eight of them
Go Pats!!!
Dad wants to break in
Should have flown Harkins airlines

The Patriots were in the 1977 Superbowl against Dallas. They had a great defense then, but the Cowboys were in another league.
1986 was their second SuperBowl. They also had an appearance in the1990s. Then came the Tuck.
Stop it. The 1986 Super Bowl was the FIRST TIME the Patriots were ever in the Super Bowl. The next time was against Green Bay 10 years later. They lost that one too.
Then they got used to the idea and had a little success.
