I mean, not real hard when it's already a more competent written, designed character and has a whole movie to expand on it. Meanwhile Jared Leto was given David Ayer' fantasy gangster world and was just used as an accessory for Harley for 7min of runtime. I'm glad we have Joaquin for sure. But he's beating Ayers' Joker. Watch Requiem for a Dream and Dallas Buyers Club, Jared was doing the same shit brilliantly. This is a character piece that wouldve benefited him too. Also the method acting bs was way exaggerated and David Ayer himself said a lot of what the media reported was fake and he and the cast talked about how he was really good to work with so these guys are being quite ridiculous. Joaquin is also a method actor btw. Like jeez chill out a bit. Anyway, this movie is looking brilliant I can't wait.

Thank you Ace Jared Leto is a great actor but WB/DC/Ayers didn't give him that on screen time to flex his acting muscles. Plus you had fans who didn't want to look pass his tattooed look to see there was something to his Joker. The time he was on screen that look in his eyes can scare you.

It has more a "Taxi Driver" vibe than anything else. It looks to have another nod to "The King of Comedy" as well with the cameo by Robert De Niro as the talk show host. I'm still thinking Joker's final make-up pays a bit of homage to the TV show version.

It also plays with the design and colors used by John Wayne Gacy (serial killer) when he dressed as Pogo the clown. Which btw is the name on the wall of the comedy club in this trailer. This take I hope changes the entire DC Batman approach.

Loved your reaction right after the trailer!
I'm really sold by this trailer and really surprised how it's not any ordinary comic book movie and looks nothing like it, it's more like a character study.
Really sold by Joaquin Phoenix's performance. Heath Ledger will still no doubt be the best but Phoenix seems like he will be close to it or equally good!
Really interested about the other cast members too. The girl smiling at Joaquin in the donut store is Zazie Beetz from Deadpool. The talk show host is Robert DeNiro. And also cool to know the guy on TV about the guy hiding behind the mask is playing Thomas Wayne. And the kid behind the gate is playing Bruce Wayne.

I am great there is a reasoning behind it all but more then anything...I WANT THIS MOVIE TO GO AS DARK AS POSSIBLE.
Tired of what one of they most disgusting psychopaths is being watered down...NO MORE DAMMIT.
Understand him...BUT UNDERSTAND HE IS VILE AND DOES VILE THINGS AND SHOW IT.
    Just my take.
I heard it is R but more importantly I heard it is a HARD R.
    PERFECT :)
The Joker makeup is spot on imo for the decade it is supposed to take place. The makeup isn't the important part anyway, its the way the character is portrayed wearing it.

Giving someone a legitimate motivation is not "watering" them down. There are plenty of supervillains that are not human for you to have your fun with. The Joker has always been portrayed as a product of society, JUST LIKE BATMAN.

I felt this film was trying to show that the joker isn't a "cool" character. The Leto Joker wanted to make Joker cool and sexy but that's not him. Joker is tragic, deranged, damaged, and full of hatred. Much of the public almost celebrates mental illness but this movie wipes all that off the table and points to what it truly is and I don't think a lot of people are going to be comfortable watching how much the every day person can contribute to making a Joker every day.

Smile, though your heart is aching
    Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
    you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
    Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
    for you
Light up your face with gladness
    Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile

It was rewarding to see the turnaround that I expected. :p Every single time I see this trailer, I get chills. If you let it be its own movie in its own kindaverse, I think it'll blow everyone away.

In 1981, a failed stand-up comedian turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City, slowly rising up to become a frightening legend.
Inspired by Martin Scorsese writings and films, remember its a STAND ALONE movie of just joker only

It's a crime that you've never seen Falling Down. It's one of the best movies ever from a time when action movies ruled the world. Michael Douglas is brilliant (like always).

Many modern iterations of Joker in other media have kind of adopted this concept that he was a really good guy before the world finally broke him. And actually this origin makes him eventually a way better villain. I think this may be the DC answer to Logan. This may be an R-rated character piece. Also, this takes place in 1981. The little boy is Bruce Wayne and the guy on the television is Thomas Wayne. I think Joker’s mother dies and that sends him over the edge. I also think we see Bruce’s parents killed in this movie. I don’t know if Joker does it or not. But I think that shot of Joker making him smile is after his parents are dead. This movie looks amazingly good. This could be better than Ledger’s Joker. That’s about the highest praise I can give.

Anyone who says they don't know how a Joker movie can exist without Batman has no imagination....you could do character study movies for most of Batman a villains
...and the DC world's strategy isn't hard to understand....it's simply doing solo movies in there own world's....

It is simple what the wanna draw you in, mentally. As the Buddha is within you, Christ Jesus is within you, eternal God is within you, JOKER IS WITHIN YOU and so everything is within you till the time you accept it and let it go. Things happen in our life and basically be more aware of those daily rut we get into and how repeat themselves (it is at the most core of your life and what you are, for you are being the imagination of your own creative powers, these are thoughts words deeds of yours and mostly the feelings, how you intrepret, construe, perceive, assume life itself. Mental and physical worlds own & exist to That which are Conscious of those. Conscious is aware of Conscious_ness. It is the Isness of Conscious aware something being becoming till the pendulum of time wrecked you down and become nothing_ness as you change. You are a state a nation a world of trillion cells living under the laws of the same world you live in and half of the same govern Will. Because your heart beaten unwillingly of your conscious Will you are pointing out yourself to be but cannot fix a standard point where it is by virtue that you belongs to nothing specific. You are the process and along with world move together. The problem is when you perceive yourself to be between two worlds and thus duality is of the bigger grandeur problem of confliction of main issues we have to deal with daily. I said all this because with this trailer and because this Joker seems to get you goosebumps because they target to produce something which was someone (a boy to bring happiness in the world according to his mom's standards but become no one specific individual (after his life tragedy) but holds one very sociable and individual characteristic of that Conscious persona you put on every day (I mean of that ''I am blah blah blah" viz EGO. We all are the Ego and with that Joker you will see clearly pristinely unvaguely the personification of what we eagerly anticipate to watch on our screens. _JOKER_ . this is also why we do not see at the titles ''The Joker'' but JOKER. All the scenario and life being done around JOKER. This movie if it is gonna be a special one and fancy in a good way MUST JOKER BE and we remain to see the plot and the whole conspiracy inside the brain of Arthur before became Joker. It is Joker and not the Joker because he is not Joker merely himself, you are Joker also. I wonder how they will point to it. So who create the plot must bring you into the psych mind of the same person who have been through similar things happen to you. (unfold the Joker inside you.) Maybe this Joker ain't simply an egoistic junkie addicted to criminal activities and connive odd devious plot, a tricky one mad man with sharp intelligent of what he is doing. This Joker must be not a left brainer plainly but the total power of a perfect mindset looking and seeking into life as life is himself. So much confident must be this Joker, therefore I am not curious of Joaquin Phoenix's stature pose and voice tone/tint; He will show us FROM ...(woe is me) TO ...(**** you all).

One thing, while I enjoyed the Nolan Trilogy, let's 100% real here, his Batman wasn't a good Batman. I think Batman Begins had the best Batman and is why that's my favorite of the 3 movies, but none of the movies have come close to what the Batman is.
Firstly none of the movies feature one of his greatest traits, being The World's Greatest Detective. The most we've ever gotten is in the original Tim Burton film and Batman gives Vicki Vale that information about the mixture of chemicals the Joker is using to make people smile.
And one of the things the Nolan Trilogy didn't have is the fact that Bruce would much rather be Batman than Bruce, it's his mission, he's sole purpose for existing, and he sacrifices Bruce Wayne in order to keep going as Batman.
The only really good Batmans we've seen on a screen are the Animated versions and the Arkham games. None of the movie's have had great Batmans.

I think I like this Joker more than even Ledger's scratchy voice version. I empathize with Joaquin's Joker more than Heath's, because a completely mental person is more likely to be quiet than one that keeps on talking. But Heath's has become the new "baseline" for all Joker's now, in the same way all TV Jokers will always be compared to the Classic TV Joker portrayed by Cesar Romero.
