Chronology of Ideological trends in National movement.
1. Moderate nationalists who believed in the notion of "prayer and petition" within the domains of constitutional methods and having faith in establishing political connections with the British authorities for the redressal of their grievances.
Ideological basis- liberalism and englightened thinking
Reason- avoiding hostility on behalf of government in fear of suppression of their political activities for mobilising people towards a nationwide freedom struggle and creating a sense of national consciousness.
2. Extremist trend-
Failure of moderates to make a wider appeal towards the masses and their inclination towards the western school of thoughts which led to the emergence of a radical faction within the Congress leadership.
Ideological basis- Indian culture, Indian history and sense of pride in Indian civilization.
Their methods included going beyond the constitutional methods of agitation encompassing boycott and swadeshi andolan.
3. The era of Revolutionary terrorism:
Ideological basis-
1. Initial phase - individual heroic action that justified violence
2. Advent of Socialist and Marxist trend which favoured a non-violent popular broad based revolution.
Methods-
1. assassination attempts on unpopular government officials and the traitors among the revolutionaries.
2. Planning swadeshi dacoites to raise funds for revolutionary movement
3. Under socialist trend and communist trend-
a. Liberation of India
b. Emancipation of the exploited classes of workers and peasants from the capitalists and tenants through a continuous class struggle and establishing a socialist order as envisaged under Marxist manifesto.
For eg. A ploriteriat revolution.
