What really strikes me as I watch this footage is that the British police don't look as if they even believe they have the authority to police those people. They look as if they're just present on the mob's terms, there for as long as the mob permits them to be there, hoping and praying that the mob doesn't decide to hurt them.
It's bizarre and very telling; a complete inversion of the power dynamic that ought to exist, and in fact would exist if the mob were to replaced by a similar sized crowd of pro-British people, over whom the police would feel they had full authority.
In Britain, our police force has always operated on a principle of policing by consent. That principle completely breaks down when applying it to people who don't hold British values.
