  • Have you ever wondered where the different parts of your violin, viola, or cello bow come from? In this video, we look at the different materials used to create a bow and where they come from and talk to a professional bow maker about the process of making a bow.

    I know this is an old video and maybe it's been addressed. But it would have been nice to talk about the alternatives that bow makers use-- different woods, synthetic hair, and even plastic. Not every student can afford a pernumbuco bow or ebony frogs or silver fittings. But still a very interesting video, and one I'll share with my students to watch while they're at home.

    This is an amazing video! I just don't like the fact that a lot of animals are used to make these bows.

    The video does not explain what it does use instead of ivory, how come?

      Generally mammoth ivory is used instead of elephant. There are also alternative materials such as imitation ivory or silver and other metals.
