  • D'Ussé (pronounced "dew say") Very Superior Old Pale (VSOP) Cognac is a relative newcomer on the cognac scene given that most cognac producers are well over 100 years old easily.
Launched in 2012/13, D'Ussé VSOP came to prominence as it was endorsed by rapper, turned entrepreneur, Jay-Z, notable other half of Beyonce. He is also a part owner of this cognac with the majority owner being Bacardi. This is Bacardi's first foray into the cognac product category.
Is this celebrity cognac any good? Please watch my review and let me know what you think!

Well Jason, I agree with your review 100%. I am 74 years of age, I have been drinking cognac for >50 years; and while D'Ussé is not the best cognac on the market, at this price point, in my honest opinion, it is indeed one of the best VSOP cognac I ever had. I bought one bottle earlier this week and once I tasted it, I called my local LCBO store and asked them to set two bottles aside for me. It's good, it's really good, smooth and flavourful.

You can get D'Usse VSOP 750ml for $40 USD. That's a good deal when you consider the VERY nice bottle and a respectable 4 year old cognac. The brand is new as opposed to the century-old players in this market. The market leader Hennessy VSOP might edge it out in taste and garner WAY more name recognition/prestige, but you pay for the privilege (heh).
I'll have to see what gets a better reception between the two with my friends. In any event, you can always use D'Usse as a high quality and affordable cognac mixer.

As a fellow Canadian, I share your pain in struggling to find a lot of variety of Cognac. One thing I have discovered from making brandy is that it is an inherently harsh spirit. To get the rough edges off is a real feat.
Thanks for reviewing cognac! It is hard to find quality review on TH-cam of this spirit.

Yes, sadly cognac doesn't attract enough attention from reviewers.

I thought we were into fine aged rums during the summer months? (At least I am, and some are relative bargains). In the states, the weather is still warm, so I'll wait until the first Canadian cool wave comes through to transition back into scotch. Cheers!

Thanks for all your insight regarding not only the quality of the spirits you review, but their relative value in the market. Would you be able to review Dewar's 19 year old scotch in a future video? Thanks a bunch from south of the border!

Dewars 19 is not available where I am. So won’t be reviewed anytime soon. If I do happen see an interesting Dewars to review will make an attempt. Thanks for the kind words and tuning in!

This is the first time I will have to respectfully disagree with your assessment. I am glad it wasn't over a scotch. D'Usse is mediocre at best IMHO. I found it cloyingly sweet, harsh and rough. Immature. I am yet to find a "celebrity" endorsed liquor, that's halfway good. The money that should be spent on improving the quality of the product goes to a multi-million endorsement contract. Profit margins are razor thin, so what happens to quality? IT GOES DOWN! Sad, but true. Thank you for years worth of wonderful reviews, and for many more to come. Cheers 🥃

I haven't tried the Cognac, but I agree with your opinion in celebrity-endorsed spirits. I think most rappers just mix their cognac with coca-cola anyway?

Clynelish 14 is excellent! Haven’t reviewed it on the channel as don’t have a bottle available where I live. Years ago I reviewed it on my blog: jason-scotchreviews.blogspot.com/2010/10/clynelish-14-years-famous-grouse-18.html?m=1

Yeah got it on sale at binnys for 44 US dollars. It’s good but not as refined as Hine or Hardy. However this really grows on you and becomes better after each glass. I definitely like it better than courvousier vsop and it’s literally on par with the Hennessy vsop can’t go wrong with either really. But if you want the best cognac experience Hine and Hardy and Deluze are a step above in my opinion

I purchased this bottle as a gift for my father-in-law. He loves Brandy/Cognac. I am a Single Malt and Bourbon drinker. All the reviews on the LCBO app were strongly positive. The most common word that is used to describe this is "smooth". I should have taken that as a warning. The best thing that I can say about this is that it is not harsh. I did not enjoy the thin mouth feel. Drinking this with ice would be the last thing I would do. I personally did not find the sweetness to be cloying. As my first cognac in 20 years it was not impressive. I don't drink Whisky that is considered "smooth" for the same reason I was underwhelmed by this "smooth" cognac. I find that when a producer is focused on making something "smooth" they typically sacrifice depth of flavor. Oh yeah, definitely coloured. I might as well be drinking Dalmore.

Any reason why using a Glencairn over a snifter for this cognac?

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The brandy snifter I have is kinda massive to the point of being cartoonish. So opted for the Glencairn.

I just tried this Cognac. Way, way overpriced. Should sell for around $25 to $30 since it is no better than most VSs. It makes a good mixer for a Sidecar or other cocktails. As a sipping Cognac it is a failure. Not surprising it's a Bacardi product--it ranks among Bacardi's mid-level product offerings.
