The Royal Navy are the Senior Service, even during the Civil War (c.1655) the Army per se was barely being formed, it was embryonic. The modern Royal Navy traces its origins to the early 16th century and prior to that in maritime engagements during The Hundred Years War (14th & 15th Centuries).
The Merchant Navy kept Britain from starving during WW2. The Atlantic Convoys were hit time and time again. My father loved SPAM as it came from America and fed us. Rationing only ended in 1953/56? I didn’t see The Chelsea Pensioners march on. I love the affection we as a Country have for them. Rationing ended in 1954. I remember it well 😉 I still have a partially used ration book in my name indicating exactly when it ended 🙂. Amazing to remember that at the time of the late Queen's Coronation in 1953, we were still experiencing Post WW2 rationing.
England had a professional navy before it had a regular army, there was a Kings Navy, when land forces were feudal levies, the followers of individual barons who came to support the monarch, or did not, or opposed the monarch. The oldest regiment in the British Army, the Scots Guards were started in the mid 16th century while even late medieval monarchs had their own fighting ships, though still calling upon private vessels in time of war. so the British Navy is the Senior Service then it’s the Army and the Air Force is the junior service. The Royal Marines are part of the Navy, British warships carry Marine contingents for what are now called amphibious operations, hence their name.
Mark says of the Merchant Navy " Not as popular" They sure were when more than 30000 died in WW2. Up to 1942, their pay ceased the moment their ship went down!

The navy is the oldest service that's why they enter first, the army is the second service and the Royal Air Force is the newest service, formed during WWI and was previously the Army flying Corp.. My paternal grandfather flew a Sopwith Camel biplane during this war.
A minor correction (from a former airman): the Royal Air Force was formed on 1st April 1918 from the Royal Flying Corps *and* the Royal Naval Air Service. This dual heritage is reflected in the rank structure and markings; the commissioned ranks and insignia mirroring the Navy's while non-commissioned officers carried ranks and markings reflecting the Army's.

The Merchant Navy doesn't get as much honours as the others, but boy! They bleed and died during the Second World War trying to keep our shipping and supplies coming into the UK. American merchant navy lost a lot too during that. Unsung heroes, in a way. They don't get to fight, but without them, those that DO fight will quickly be unable to continue.
The moment when the Ukraine military attaché came down made it so emotional for me. Obviously they are in a time of great need now, but they also would've been remembering the previous wars.
What the hell do you mean saying the Merchant Navy are not as popular followed by a snigger . Our Merchant Navy played a major part in both world wars, resulting in the loss of thousands of merchant sailors. We have a great respect for our seafaring personnel 'who met the enemy head on time and time again, and most certainly do not deserve to be laughed at.
The Royal Navy are first because they are alternatively known as the Senior Service. With the RAF being the most recently formed branch of the military, the army naturally follow the Navy. Anyway, it doesn't much matter other than for ceremonial occasions as we love and respect them all equally.
Mark, you’re quite well informed! Respect to you. I know that most people from another country can’t be expected to know or understand these things but some video makers show a video of let’s say of the Trooping the Colour and have made no effort whatsoever to find out the least thing about it, I understand that they are supposed to be finding out as they watch but then they often stop it and ask a question and quite often they have spoken over the commentator’s explanation and then sometimes miss the important bits! If they’re so confused how confused will their subscribers be? Far better to do at least a little research. I tend to watch only yours and two others now. The Royal Navy was enacted by Henry VIII, is the Senior Service. Merchant Navy new addition to Remembrance, often forgotten. One service never included, which predates the Royal Navy, wishes to remain anonymous and has remained so for 500 hundred years, good on them. Yes our new Priminister, for the moment!!
The armed forces enter the Albert Hall in order of seniority. The Navy enters first because it was founded first. Its original foundation is often attributed to Alfred the Great over 1150 years ago although recent research suggests that it was founded 20 or so years before Alfred was crowned. The modern navy was created during the reign of Henry VIII about 500 years ago.
It’s all to do with seniority. The Royal Navy is called the “senior service” because they were the 1st formed. Although there had been Armies before there was a true “Royal Navy” they tended to be temporary, being raised by various Dukes and Lords to fight for a specific battle or war. There were very few professional soldiers. When the New Model Army was introduced it was the first professional army, which was the blue print for the British Army. So the Royal Navy are the oldest service, then the Royal Marines, then the British Army, and finally the Royal Air Force, which was founded in 1918. You will see this formation at ALL ceremonial events that include all the Services.
The army, according to what I was told, is the British Army with no 'Royal' in the name because it comes from the New Model Army of the Parliamentarians who were fighting against the King in the English Civil War. They (and the RAF) have to swear an oath of allegiance to the monarch now.
@@jacquieclapperton9758 Yes you are correct. I think RN Officers also swear the oath of allegiance. The British Army has many Regiments and Corps which have earned the “Royal” appellation such as; the Royal Engineers, the Royal Tank Regiment, the Royal Army Medical Corps, the Royal Signals etc…, others are aligned to the Monarch or other Royal; the Kings Regiment, the Princess of Wales Regiment, the Queens Dragoon Guards etc…
@@florrie2303 I don't know about officers but I certainly didn't have to as a rating. A rather proud boast against the other services, that our word of our loyalty was enough that we didn't need to swear an oath to it. Officers, of course, carry the monarch's commission.
The Royal Navy always goes first as it's the Senior Service. Then the Army followed by the Royal Airforce as it's the Youngest of the armed services. only being formed on 1st of April 1918; 104 years ago.
They enter in order of seniority. The Royal Navy is the oldest, often referred to as "the Senior Service" , the RAF is the youngest, not created 'til 1st April 1918, by the amalgamation of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps.
If it wasn't for my late Father and his Fathers Regiment the Royal Engineers there wouldn't be the Army Air Corp which later formed the RAF . PS thank you for wearing a Poppy it means alot to us Limeys your Cousins from across the pond. The Navy is the Senior Service then the Army then the RAF .
While browsing UTube I've recently come across a BBC "personality" by the name of Philomena Cruck. I'm not sure where to put her. She could be a historian, a professor, an actress or a comic. Hopefully one of the crowd here can clarify. Anyway I found her quite entertaining. You might check her out Mark. I think you'll like her.
Philomena Cunk is a character played by Diane Morgan, an English actress. She first appeared on Chalie Brooker's Weekly Wipe back in 2013. And she's bloody funny!
I was privileged to participate in the 'muster' twice in my military career. Marching down the steps required a certain amount of rehearsal and the final step is twice as long which threatens 'break your step'. Bearing in mind there are two performances under the beady eye of the GSM (Garrison Scary Monster) who you see at the top of the steps and God help you if your poor drill is caught on camera for all your mates to see 😆The memories of those two days will remain with me with pride, certainly the culmination of my career along with guarding the Tower of London for a day and two operational tours.
The Navy came first as it is officially the senior of the three services. During WWII the merchant navy suffered a higher percentage of killed than any of the three armed services, If a ship was sunk and the merchant seaman survived his pay was stopped from the date of the sinking by the ship owners because he was officially no longer at work,
The "British Army" does not have "Royal" in front of its name like the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The "New Model Army" was the first standing army to be created. In 1645 under Oliver Cromwell for the Parliamentarians. This was during the period of the English Civil Wars. With the Restoration of Charles II as King. It was reconstituted as the first "British Army" in 1660. For the first time it included the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish, (although the Scots didn't ratify until 1707 under unification) and from that time swore their allegiance to the Monarch and their Heirs, in common with the rest of the military. However, they never took the overall Royal name. Of greater significance was the name and "Colours" of their Regiments, and the individual regiments direct relationship to the Monarch.
I suggest to check world war weird tv series, the ghost army WW2 and the mincemeat operation the movie (I prefer the old version The Man Who Never Was 1956) or the army of the little ships (evacuation of Dunkirk, they talkaboutit in the movie Darkest hours) all these stories are so interesting I'm myself passionate about WW2
The Royal Navy is the senior service and always parades first. The Army is second senior and parades second. The Royal Air Force is the youngest service and is always last. @@MarkfromtheStates We didn't have a monarchy when the Army was formed (1660), we were under control of the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, that's the main reason, its not royal because their were no royals at the time. Whereas the Royal Navy was personally founded by Henry VIII in 1546 and the Royal Air Force by King George V in 1918.
@@markwilliamson2864 Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, so the country wasn't under his control in 1660. 1660 wasn't the original founding of the Army, it was the re-founding of the Army after its formal dissolution at the Restoration (though the warrant officially re-forming the Army wasn't issued until January 1661, Charles II had ordered the Coldstream Guards to take up arms for the King as soon as they had symbolically laid down their arms when the NMA was dissolved, and these and other Household troops constituted the Army before it was officially warranted as such). Cromwell's New Model Army was established in 1645.

They enter in order of seniority. The Royal Navy is the oldest, often referred to as "the Senior Service" , the RAF is the youngest, not created 'til 1st April 1918, by the amalgamation of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps.
The Royal Navy is also called the Senior Service as they are the oldest historically. The Royal Air Force is the youngest.
My pleasure I was honored
9:46 is the PM, 9:55 Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition ( the one who comes second in a general election )
Oh would never of guess the other guy. Thank you
The Navy is the Senior Service, we were seafarers before we had a regulated military service.
Definitely a comedy character
Well now I'm gonna look for it.
The Philomena Cunk stuff is brilliant
@@MarkfromtheStates Oops, had the name wrong. 'Cunk' is the last name.
Awesome
Royal Navy is the Senior Service and obviously the Royal Air Force being the Junior. Lots of inter service rivalry.
The Navy came first as it is officially the senior of the three services. During WWII the merchant navy suffered a higher percentage of killed than any of the three armed services, If a ship was sunk and the merchant seaman survived his pay was stopped from the date of the sinking by the ship owners because he was officially no longer at work,
terrible
Capitalism at its best.

All in step, Say no more.
From a small nation we haven't done too bad, just thinking about those who took Hitler on, God bless them
By the way, this service happens every year.
I know now and its wonderful
Navy first because they are the Senior Service.
The Royal Navy always comes first because it’s known as the Senior Service.
St BARTHOLOMEWS HOSPITAL is
900 years OLD TODAY.🎉❤😊😂😮
Wow
Thee Royal Navy is the Senior Service.
Jerusalem should have been the National Anthem.
The Navy is the senior service in age then the Army then the Airforce !
Hard to keep track of the current Prime Minister! Yep. 😂
Try the old brigade festival of remberance short vid but very moving
I suggest to check world war weird tv series, the ghost army WW2 and the mincemeat operation the movie (I prefer the old version The Man Who Never Was 1956) or the army of the little ships (evacuation of Dunkirk, they talkaboutit in the movie Darkest hours) all these stories are so interesting I'm myself passionate about WW2
Royal Navy is the senior service
Hang on, the poppy's are about to drop
So good
I can tell you that marching down those stairs is not easy as they are not level or even
The Royal Navy is the senior service and always parades first. The Army is second senior and parades second. The Royal Air Force is the youngest service and is always last. When HM, The Queens name was mentioned I welled up and the tears started streaming - what a great lady. I am so proud to have met both Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Phillip. A day I'll never forget.
Oh wow so cool
It's Done in order of service navy being oldest then army then the airforce cince 1914 being the youngest service
I will just say this. There is the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force but not the Royal Army... Why?
I don't know
@@MarkfromtheStates We didn't have a monarchy when the Army was formed (1660), we were under control of the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, that's the main reason, its not royal because their were no royals at the time. Whereas the Royal Navy was personally founded by Henry VIII in 1546 and the Royal Air Force by King George V in 1918.
Thanks Mark...I need to bone up on my Royal history
Regiments of course like the Royal Artillery,Royal Engineers, Royal Regiment of Scotland etc.
navy is the senior service because of age and they haven't every actively fought against the king, the civil war ruins it for the army haha.
"Merchant Navy - not as popular".....says the presenter...they kept the UK fed during the 6 years of war (largely with the much appreciated support of the US)......so please think again.
As I said at the time... Didn't mean anything by that... Just commenting on the crowds reaction
look at all them rich types.
Only members of the Royal British Legion are eligible to apply for tickets to the Festival of Remembrance, limited to two tickets per member. I wouldn’t call the average member of the RBL rich by any means.
You yanks absolutely dream of having this tradition
Stick to your “smart honour guards” with sun glasses
LOL I will those guys are awesome but yes it would be nice to have something like this.
Just to confuse you even further have a look at this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army_order_of_precedence.
Oh geez that did it... Brain fried
@@MarkfromtheStates I did an exchange tour with the US Army in the 80's as an SSgt (E7). Couple of great years in Virginia. Had some interesting times trying to explain this to your guys.
Lol I bet
In the UK, the Guards are known as 'The cowards in the big hats'.
I do not believe this
First I’ve heard. Have you been dreaming. Or is your name commensurate with the size of your brain.
So NOT true! They deploy to areas on conflict just like regular army units.
