Someone could ask why didn't the Holy Prophet tell them to make some sort of democracy or republic, and why God ordered him to declare Imam Ali as his successor? When you look at the republics and democracies that came in the centuries before Islam, you'd see that firstly, these democracies and republics were built to serve city states, whose inhabitants were citizens who were living there for centuries in these cities. Ancient republics and democracies were not made for large, broad multi ethnic empires. Which is why, when the Persians in ancient times formed their empire, they discussed what sort of way to rule it best, and they decided against making it a democracy, because the multitude of ethnicities would divide the empire and make it ungovernable if everyone has an equal right to vote for any government officials and rulers they freely choose. Everyone would vote for people who belong to their own ethnicity, and disputes would start to wreck everything. Therefore, if you have a very large society with many ethnicities and a large geographic expanse, making it a democracy or republic isn't feasible in certain respects. Another thing is that almost all the ancient democracies and republics ended up being ruled by autocrats, because even in these cities, the (usually economic) strife between the factions within these democratic and republican societies expand, deepen, and intensify to an extent that people lose faith in the system and give their support to an autocrat, and this is exactly what happened with Rome when the republic caved in on itself and ended up with an emperor as it's ruler. But as the thirst for wealth, and the unbridled egoism that is natural and intrinsic to humans would reach very intense levels for any human being who has that sort of power, the emperors went to extreme levels of avarice and cruelty. So, now the Holy Prophet has made his government, and the intention is that it encompasses the whole world and all it's people. So this is a multi ethnic political organism, and running it purely by voting, and placing all power entirely in the hands of the global public will give grounds for divisions that will end up in some sort of dictator or civil war. So, he has to place power in a successor, but a successor who does not suffer from the human frailty of avarice, greed, and egoism. Imam Ali is perfect for that duty. Therefore, he was announced as the successor to the Holy Prophet during the Prophets life, but this position was usurped later on. Imam Ali's conduct when power was placed back in his hands decades later was a clear example of his total purity from greed, avarice, and egoism. He never punished anyone who didn't want to swear allegiance to him, nor did he demand such oaths as something compulsory and mandatory, nor did he ever punish any people who openly spoke against him or opposed his rule politically, nor did he cut off the salary and pay of his opponents that was given to them by his government, nor did he give bribes (nor did he accept them) , nor did he pay hired poets and speakers to praise him to bolster his public support, nor did he pay his enemies into siding with him for money. And he didn't favor one tribe over another, nor one race over another. He gave a unified salary from the government treasury to everyone who lived under his rule, regardless of creed, color, or culture, everyone, the high and low, got their three gold dinars every week. He used to wear two cloaks, lived in a small house of mud brick, and ate bread and vinegar, and he never changed this way of living even though he had power over all the trade, mines and farmland between Egypt and Afghanistan. Even one of his enemies said about him, علي الدر و الذهب المصفى و باقي الناس كلهم تراب
