All these people complaining that the bonus features are on DVDs instead of Blu-Rays aren't realizing that it's not going to make a difference. All of the behind-the-scenes footage was shot on video cameras from the late 90s and early 2000s. The picture quality isn't going to be that great no matter what, and upscaling to 1080p would just add noise and grain.
When I watched the shire's opening scene, I shat my pants. The song and they dialogue came from the Main speakers, but the ones behind the rooms played the sound of water streams, the people talking, the trees leaves through the wind. Truly masterful.
Absolutely. These are some of the most incredible adventure/action/epic movies ever made. A fantastic story, great cast performances, and top-notch movie making. This box set is listed on Amazon for $50 through tomorrow. The deal ends Saturday at 11:59pm. DON'T MISS OUT!
This thing still isn't out in my country. As far as I remember you can't even find a Blu-ray release of the Two Towers and Return of the king. It makes me feel terrible.
I have the Extended edition on Blue Ray. It is worth getting it. I love how the picture quantity and sound is amazing. I love watching the movies in Hd and extended edition also.
@halo6534 I honestly think that in time, Peter Jackson's LOTR movies will become one of those movie trilogies that we will look back on fondly and show our kids 30 years from now the same way that people still show their kids Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Back to the Future
@MysteryBounty of course! the first one is the beginning of frodo and friends journey, how he got the ring and how he met Aragorn, the future King of Gondor... i suggest u to get ur hands on the extended one to see the deleted scenes...
why don't they release a version of these with only blurays, and each movie on one bluray? thats my biggest problem with the current boxsets, i want each extended edition on ONE bluray, i dont wanna switch discs for one movie
@mcintyre0591 I'm going to be getting it thise weekend, Will it still be on sale at Best Buy by then? And do you know how much Walmart is selling it for?
Yeah I did own the theatrical DVD trilogy, but I bought this BLu-Ray extended trilogy, and its honestly the ultimate viewing experience for any fans of the Lord of the Rings movies are books. I was found of how the box is organized the same way as the book. The book is organized (or at least is usually intended to be organized) in one volume, three books, each in two parts, with Appendices. This trilogy is in one book-like box, in three Blu-Ray cases, each in two parts, with appendices. It gives a sense that the movie-makers wanted the trilogy to be just as fulfilling as the book. The Hobbit extended trilogy, however, is an entirely different story.
Hey i have a question if you don't mind. Since each movie comes in two parts, does that mean that one disc contains half a movie and you have to change into disc 2 midway?
***** Yes. It's a bit annoying, but for the most part, they place that stopping point where you have to switch somewhere that won't disrupt the flow of the story. Like for example, Part 1 of the Fellowship of the Ring ends with the speech of all of them getting together and forming the fellowship. Closing with Pippin saying "so, where do we begin?" Then it stops and you pop the other part in with them beginning their journey after meeting with the elves.
If you don't own the movies yet, you're going to want the remastered Blu-ray edition that was quietly released in 2021 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Fellowship. The picture and sound could not be more crisp and clean there. The 4K edition from 2020 is actually rather muddy looking
@adriandude85 No, look at the IMDB forums, blu ray forums, etc. The FOTR disc has been green tinted in certain scenes , it affects the color of certain scenes to boe a lot different then the original color. You probably didn't notice it unless you compared it to the original print color.
@01984lockyer no, they didn't include things that were unnecessary in the first place.when editors edit a movie they have to keep the "timing" standards of theatres in mind.no one would watch a movie when it's 4+ hrs in theatres. so those footage are not redundant, they enrich the storyline, hence makes it a better watch. cause i watched both theatrical & now i have these blu-rays.HUGE experience difference. not only quality but characters have more life to them cause you know their background.
$120? When I bought it at target, it was roughly $100. I know that it isn't that big of a price difference but still. For the record... it was worth EVERY CENT
From what I've read and heard, The Fellowship ends at a logical point when it needs to be swapped for the next disc, and feels like a full movie. However The Two Towers and The Return Of The King apparently end abruptly, so you really have to watch them in one go.
@01984lockyer There are a lot of scenes that were removed to cut down the movie length. This edition has all of these scenes. There's like an hour more to RotK
Dude... That one shot of Gollum in the first movie when they are in Moria (in this video we see it at 1:07) used to creep the shit out of me when I was younger. I still get a bit of a jolt when I see those eyes sometimes
@TheOnePistol In-store sales vary by location, so you would have to look up a sale ad using your zip code to see if it is on sale in store. At the time I am typing this Walmart.com has the price at $69.96 and BestBuy.com has it listed as $99.99
not quite sure why there are still so many discs...the normal DVD set was 4 discs each for the extended, if blurays can hold easily 6x the data (if not more) why still so many discs?
I don't the complaining about no new special features. It's not like they're going to get everyone from the films together and be like, "We need more special features, so let's talk about the movies for a few hours." Besides, the special features aren't even what you buy the movies for imo.
they should have included the original theatrical versions as well as trying to put the extended versions onto one disk per film - blu ray can hold more info than dvd. and newer unseen extra footage and maybe a look at the hobbit. but what do i know
I have the Extended version on DVD already, I would like the Blu-ray although I may wait until a complete Hobbit/Lord of the Rings box set comes out in the future.
Wow, not even ONE SINGLE mention of the widespread "Green tint" issue that plagues the Fellowship of the ring disc? This is something you see on about any topic or review for this set, and IGN Doesn't even mention it at all..
@oblivionhicups the special features are never shot with the same camera that they use to shoot the movie so obviously they won't be in HD or to par. not a single movie that came with special features discs had the special features on HD, NONE as of yet.
@FernandoLuis191 theatrical versions are edited & cut-out to meet the "timing" standards. people don't want to sit there for 4 hours watching a movie in theatres. but, that doesn't mean theatrical cuts are always better. they're short, hence fast paced. but, extended editions have lengthy fighting sequences & additional scenes that doesn't change the storyline BUT, enriches it.
@halo6534 These movies deserve it. I mean with 18 academy awards or something like that, and it's not even that. I mean the epicness of them are just incredible. Anyone who thinks differently, just doesn't have the patience to sit through one of the best if not the best trilogys in history.
Does it matter if the bonus features are on DVD anyway? They were shot in SD, I doubt throwing them on a bluray would make any difference besides not having to switch discs.
The one thing I'd like to know, since I've only ever watched the theatrical versions, is where each film asks you to swap disks. I mean.... Do you in the end get six 2-hour-long films, each being able to stand on their own? If I don't have time to sit through 4,5 hours, can I watch the first disc of The Two Towers and that feels rewarding as a whole movie, or does it suck that the good part of it is only on the next disc?
all nice and dandy. but i still believe it should have been not more than 3 Blu-ray discs inclusive of everything. its not like its crowded in any one of those disc's anyway, lol. and even if each of the movies are maximized to full, absolute, hyper HD (which is still not quite available on standard home system's, unless on a powerful pc of course which could even go up to 2000p if i'm not mistaken) there's probably more space left on each disc's to add all those extra contents.
so if i watched the films from this...and then again on the normal dvd's i have...i would notice a differenece in the story? things that didnt happen before? or just...better quality
@halo6534 i'm so happy that some one is the same opinion like me. i think avatar is no bad movie.. but waaay to overrated and hyped... and i think everyone of us already knows a stroy that is almost like avatar's... its much to typical. LotR is an own universe: every tree, every river or every single animal etc. has an own story and a reason for being there... its just the most epic storyline ever written. you can't even compare it to avatar.
To anyone else who has bought this; I was watching the Fellowship of the Ring, and my disc stopped/skipped for a second at certain parts, anyone else have this problem?
Okay so this is what I got. There is one blaring issue. And that is that the special features are in dvd quality. So why did you give it a 10/10? It’s not perfect.
@dudetube911 so we have to pay more money what else? what do you think those colorful boxes are for to make the pricetag go up without having to spend to much
@narutofan9tf How is mentioning the lack of HD featurettes then giving a perfect score a fair review? It seems like they gave it a perfect score BECAUSE it is LoTR rather than on its own merits.
@lorddresefer it's the extended edition it comes with a shit load of content that the original movies didn't come with. Deleted scenes, Behind the Scenes, Commentaries.
Yes yes, I know all about the joys of Blu-ray. I've got a 42" 3D SONY Full HD TV, blah blah. I've got the whole package that I'll need to make the most out of the format, but in this case, it seems it's not the equipment's fault. I suppose the problem with the Rings Trilogy here is that they probably are "supposed" to look like this, whereas I was hoping for a super sharp image. And it simply isn't that. It DOES look better than DVD, though, and also better than the previous Blu version...
@o0th3Jok3R0o I just meant that they wouldnt take out bits they thought to be important to the film, only bits they thought where not essential. but oh right, i see
@01984lockyer each of the movies come in 2 blurays EACH! they don't have a different story OBVIOUSLY, it's just more lengthy action sequences that are usually edited out for the purpose of theatrical viewers cause no one wants to sit in a theatre for 3+hours you know. for example, the Return of the King has almost an hour of more footage THAN the extended dvd that i had from before.
You list some flaws, not serious flaws, but flaws none the less and you still give it a perfect score? Does it really deserve it or is it because it is Lord of the Rings and you feel obligated to give it a perfect score?
YES thank you IGN for finally giving a good review and i never got the originals cause im like 14 and so im poor so i got this and loved these movie's with all my heart
@ISetYourFaceOnFire For sure man i thought i was gonna get trolled by people for saying that but apparently everyone agrees and all the comments have been positive feedback its nice to have a forum thats civil and knows a good movie when they see one

The 10/10 is completely justified. LOTR trilogy is the best trilogy ever made.
Lord of the Rings > Harry Potter
Wait there's a question?
Greatest trilogy of all time !!!!
When I watched the shire's opening scene, I shat my pants. The song and they dialogue came from the Main speakers, but the ones behind the rooms played the sound of water streams, the people talking, the trees leaves through the wind. Truly masterful.

Oh TH-cam algorithm, why did you send me here in 2020?
I have the Extended edition on Blue Ray. It is worth getting it. I love how the picture quantity and sound is amazing. I love watching the movies in Hd and extended edition also.
These movies are the best movies made. They never get bad. I watch them atleast 20 times per year.
10 out of 10 is perfection. If it was perfect then there would b no "bad news" like the one at 1:51
@halo6534 I honestly think that in time, Peter Jackson's LOTR movies will become one of those movie trilogies that we will look back on fondly and show our kids 30 years from now the same way that people still show their kids Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Back to the Future
Got it for $40 on amazon last year. Wooorth
same here bro . I am so happy with my purchase. I love the quantity of sound and picture it has. I love how the movies are a lot longer.
Somehow I got it for only $25 back in 2012.
@MysteryBounty of course! the first one is the beginning of frodo and friends journey, how he got the ring and how he met Aragorn, the future King of Gondor... i suggest u to get ur hands on the extended one to see the deleted scenes...
Best war scene ever in a film Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The Riders of Rohan are fearless.
why don't they release a version of these with only blurays, and each movie on one bluray? thats my biggest problem with the current boxsets, i want each extended edition on ONE bluray, i dont wanna switch discs for one movie
7 years laters lol but the movie is too long to be in 1 disc so that’s why they put it in different discs
@@jessieaguilar5183i read they were concerned with video quality potentially being compromised
@mcintyre0591 I'm going to be getting it thise weekend, Will it still be on sale at Best Buy by then? And do you know how much Walmart is selling it for?
Man, this makes me want to re-watch all the movies.

I studied a bit of Tolkien at the university. I'm a huge fan.
It's $49.99 on Amazon currently!
best movies ever made from the best books ever written by the greatest mastermind in history. J.R.R Tolkien FOR LIFE!!!!
@saturn118 10/10 on their scale does not read "Perfect" it reads "Masterpiece", and this set is a Masterpiece.
If you don't own the movies yet, you're going to want the remastered Blu-ray edition that was quietly released in 2021 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Fellowship. The picture and sound could not be more crisp and clean there. The 4K edition from 2020 is actually rather muddy looking

this masterpiece is every home theater owner's favorite movie!
I've had no problems with my Fellowship of the Ring either. My mate has, but when compared, mine's fine. :S
EVEN LONGER?! Whoa...just...whoa...
Omg, it's finally coming. I'm so getting this as soon as I can. I don't have a bluray player yet though.
This is amazing...
This review was made awesome just by playing Howard Shore in the background hehe

I have the Extended version on DVD already, I would like the Blu-ray although I may wait until a complete Hobbit/Lord of the Rings box set comes out in the future.
10/10 this deserves more than that ;D
This felt like an HD port of the DVD's but I still love it
@LightspeedJack People need to understand, $120 is the base price, that dose not mean thats what the stores are selling it at.
Wow, not even ONE SINGLE mention of the widespread "Green tint" issue that plagues the Fellowship of the ring disc?
This is something you see on about any topic or review for this set, and IGN Doesn't even mention it at all..

40 bucks on amazon. can`t wait till it gets here!
I got mine for $84.96 at Walmart the other day, and it was worth every penny. I 100% agree, this diserves a 10/10! ;)
You can't give something 10/10 and complain about for a part of the review. 10/10 means faultless. It blatantly isn't.
@Takazatara it can hold more space because the renders are that much larger
The one thing I'd like to know, since I've only ever watched the theatrical versions, is where each film asks you to swap disks. I mean.... Isn't the original theatrical versions included? Just the extended?
Peter Jackson is a beast , Cant wait for the Halo no better to do it then Jackson .
Ok so on dvd they fit it on 4 disks per movie but bluray can hold more space and they put it on 2 disks for the movie its self...
am i the only one here who doesnt notice the deference in blu-ray from a regular dvd?
I love LOTR, but how can you give it 10 out of 10 if you had like three complainants?
all nice and dandy. but i still believe it should have been not more than 3 Blu-ray discs inclusive of everything. its not like its crowded in any one of those disc's anyway, lol. and even if each of the movies are maximized to full, absolute, hyper HD (which is still not quite available on standard home system's, unless on a powerful pc of course which could even go up to 2000p if i'm not mistaken) there's probably more space left on each disc's to add all those extra contents.
so if i watched the films from this...and then again on the normal dvd's i have...i would notice a differenece in the story? things that didnt happen before? or just...better quality
so...you do a blueray review...in 720p?
$120? Wow, Got this for $83 at walmart.
@halo6534
i'm so happy that some one is the same opinion like me.
i think avatar is no bad movie.. but waaay to overrated and hyped... and i think everyone of us already knows a stroy that is almost like avatar's... its much to typical.
LotR is an own universe: every tree, every river or every single animal etc. has an own story and a reason for being there... its just the most epic storyline ever written. you can't even compare it to avatar.
@ITALIANeagles22 so did the DVDs lol the first 2 discs are the movie, then the last 2 are the "Appendices" or extras
he makes it sounds like there are some downfalls of this box set but then still gives it a perfect 10? only LOTR could pull that off
To anyone else who has bought this;
I was watching the Fellowship of the Ring, and my disc stopped/skipped for a second at certain parts, anyone else have this problem?
Seriously does ign just pick a random number as the final score?
Okay so this is what I got. There is one blaring issue. And that is that the special features are in dvd quality. So why did you give it a 10/10? It’s not perfect.
I got this set and it really is worth the money if you love LOTR! I have already watched the three films and they are remastered really well.
Get it!
They need to put these movies into 3D. I missed the original ride ay the cinema, But these would just awesome in 3D. Best.Triolgy.Ever.
we can say that ign couldnt say you shall not pass to this trillogy
@dudetube911 so we have to pay more money what else? what do you think those colorful boxes are for to make the pricetag go up without having to spend to much
Wow their reviews are useless... He says its not perfect but still gives it a perfect note...
@narutofan9tf How is mentioning the lack of HD featurettes then giving a perfect score a fair review? It seems like they gave it a perfect score BECAUSE it is LoTR rather than on its own merits.
I just don't see any point in buying this...they're just going to release another box set after the Hobbit comes out.
i know it's a dumb question but is this widescreen or fullscreen??
@lorddresefer it's the extended edition it comes with a shit load of content that the original movies didn't come with. Deleted scenes, Behind the Scenes, Commentaries.
Bought this blur-ay trilogy extended edition new on amazon for 49.99. Best 50 bucks I have spent in my life and probably ever will spend.
@killa420herb A .the film came out in 2001 and B. it didnt come out on VHS AND C. the extended versions didnt come out like a year after the film
10 out of 10 out of 10 out of 10 out of 10 out of 10 out of ten
I didn't know things could get 10/10.
Yes yes, I know all about the joys of Blu-ray. I've got a 42" 3D SONY Full HD TV, blah blah.
I've got the whole package that I'll need to make the most out of the format, but in this case, it seems it's not the equipment's fault.

It DOES look better than DVD, though, and also better than the previous Blu version...
Each movies are on 2 disc for a better quality so i prefer in 2 disc
Im going to wait for the hobits and the lord of the rings to come on blu ray extended edition. so then theyll all be in one huge pack.
wow, they gave it a 10/10. And it haven't gotten anything in common with CoD, have they gone mad?
No mention of the colour?
@o0th3Jok3R0o I just meant that they wouldnt take out bits they thought to be important to the film, only bits they thought where not essential. but oh right, i see
24+ people fell to the power of the ring.
fave film of all time along with saving private ryan
I had the extended editions for every movie on DVD years ago. The movie is fucking amazing and the special features are really intresting.
this shouldn't count as a fucking daily fix video, its a review
@olacola15 its actually 9.99 but they rounded it up
@01984lockyer each of the movies come in 2 blurays EACH!
they don't have a different story OBVIOUSLY, it's just more lengthy action sequences that are usually edited out for the purpose of theatrical viewers cause no one wants to sit in a theatre for 3+hours you know.
for example, the Return of the King has almost an hour of more footage THAN the extended dvd that i had from before.
lol do you even get the movies them self or just bonus stuff and behind the swcene stuff lol im so lost?
where are you shopping??? I got mine for $70
@josepasillas530
sure... movies like that are synchronized in every language.
