Btw the wiring it all just a test. I got bored of waiting for the circuit boards I put together for this project so plonked in an old midi to solenoid controller I built a few years back for the next vid :) hence the ratnest wago’s 😂 also this video isn’t denoting that it isn’t going to be a difficult challenge! I can imagine it gets harder and harder the more complex it gets. Tuning and voicing. Videos just A Bit of fun 😂

What I think is interesting is the people that do know what they are doing are just giving as much advice on how to do it as they can in the most supportive way I’ve ever seen because they know the only other destination for this instrument was a scrap heap.
I often get the feeling while watching this channel that Sam must have figured out how to fit extra hours in a day, or potentially extra days in a week. The constant throughput of big complex projects is really impressive.

Given that you're probably going to midi it, it's probably better to start fresh, and will end up more versatile as a result. Those old mass-contact relay systems are a maintenance nightmare.

I meet people every day that have been taught to 'leave it to the professionals'. It's too bad really. I couldn't imagine thinking that I couldn't do anything. I would feel helpless. What a sad way to live.
I love them. I haven't paid for an electrical appliance in years. The best bit is when they say "I'll buy it back off you" and get laughed at.

i almost was one of those "dont do that" comments but then i rememered that you can do anything.
Part of me was thinking _"Don't do that."_ But then another part of me was like _"Just rip out all the antiquated electronics and replace them with MIDI-controlled Arduino."_ Maybe that's not the industry standard way to wire an organ. But it's the way to do it with a maker ethos and modern technology.

The best way of learning how to do something... is by doing it. Sure, you can get advice and help if needed, but if you just let others do it you can never learn.
I can't imagine why anyone would discourage someone who at least tries to save an old musical instrument. When the church I attend was refurbished the superb organ ended up in a skip, not even stripped for parts. I was close to tears. When I saw how this instrument had been rescued before (and what an amazing story that would have been, and to hear it played in that house!) and now that Sam is rescuing it again is just wonderfully inspiring. It may be utterly crazily optimistic but more power to your elbow! Keep the crazy flag flying!

Those criticising should remember that an organ like this isn't really an instrument anyway, is a collection of separate instruments, parts and systems brought together and played from one place. Sure, it won't be a church organ anymore, but it will live on and give joy to people, albeit in a different way. If not for you, it would have all ended up in recycling and landfill. I am very impressed with how quickly you have these parts producing music again. Well done!
Surprisingly there are still people commenting on the first video "You don't know what you're doing" even after this magnificent reply, thirteen video on the playlist to date and dozens of comments from organists and organ technicians praising Sam for what he's doing. The fact that you are slow (and if you missed all that above you are) doesn't mean everybody is and Sam, for sure, is not.

Electrically minded organ builder here: sometimes I just have to snip everything, but do so in a staggered order down the cable to leave an indication of the general sequence of things. Makes it easier later…
If you plan on using the original wiring in any capacity. But as the system is just a lot of wires switching solenoids and he's not using the "computer" cards, it's really not that necessary to worry about it.
