dekhiye sacchai yehi hai ki Vajpayee was an "image"that BJP had put up primarily because it wanted to go beyond its traditional vote bank of Hindvta into a party that could govern. Whenever the BJP as a party was in crisis it was Advani who lifted it, most notably being the Tehelka scandal during Vajpayee's regime. What also worked in his Vajpayee's favor was that he came from the Hindi heartland, i.e. Madhya Pradesh and hence could appeal voters in the Hindi heartland i.e. UP, MP, Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar and North India which was and still is BJP's main electoral base. Even Narendra Modi who was so popular with his Gujarat model had to contest from UP to give the voters of Hindi heartland that message or symbolism. Advani was from Gujarat which limited his appeal even though it was he who took BJP from 2 to power in Delhi. Advani could not extend his appeal as well as Narendra Modi did.
