    Awesome I’m looking at these clocks on eBay. Many are not working because of the torsion spring being broken. My grandma had one and was fascinated by it. Now I know I have a reference on repair or cleaning.

    Thanks for the video; you've confirmed that the pin on the bottom is a taper fit and now my spring has been replaced. Unfortunately, despite the old spring being severely kinked, it still won't run, but at least I've eliminated one thing.

    i don't think I will need to change my spring, but this is such a helpful video that I am sure that if I have to I will be able to do it with a bit more confidence. Thanks!
    i got a Kundo (not sure of the model or year) at a thrift shop for $10.99. I am going to let it run overnight (hopefully) to see if the spring will power it. I have gotten my wife into mechanical clocks. I have always been intrigued by true mechanicals. I found a Korean striking wall clock several years ago. Its timing accuracy is annoying but it is fun to have anyway. It kinda adds life to this "empty nest" and I am sure will be part of our grandchildren's memories of the house.
    I have one of those battery operated electromagnetic clocks. I had trouble getting it going, because I could not find parts. I am going to revisit it, because it is so pretty.

    • @NorkroClockParts
      @NorkroClockParts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I used a generic replacement fork. Considering the job that the fork does; its shape is not critical. The forks sold today (like the one I used) are about as universal as any clock part. I have never had a problem replacing a fork with one.

      @@NorkroClockParts I got a lot out of this video 3 years ago. In the meantime I have collected ever more examples of these clocks with far too many of the Miniatures or Midget variety. I would like a tall version as I think the weights and the ratios involved better suit this torsion style of design. However the taller older clocks are much more expensive. I like your Gustav Becker with the disc pendulum. The ball clusters are pretty but often far too loose and flimsy.
      My main problems have always centred on flutter. Its a weakness of these fascinating clocks and no matter what you do it waits in the shadows to jump out and bite you! I have been seeking an elegant cure. One that does not chop the original around and can be easily reversed. I am in fact testing one idea which shows promising results.
      I agree with more frequent winding regime with the mainspring operating its mid-range which offers a more level output power.
      Thanks again, Sincerely, BerryG (UK)

    Interesting video, and many thanks for showing the correct procedure. I had to make a Corian jig to hold the bottom spring in the compressed position to drive the tapered pin out of the bottom clamp. Someone at some time had bent one of the bottom collars and made it very hard to even get at this pin. I have loved these clocks since I was a kid and now that I am retired I have the time to learn a new hobby. These are a blast to restore since most of the older 400 day clocks were very well made and can be found at very reasonable prices. I didn't know about the cut glass being only on the older clocks. Any idea of when they made the change to pressed glass with the smooth edge?

    Correction from a physicist:
    It's not adjusting the centrifugal force, it's adjusting the moment of inertia which slows down or speeds up the lock.
    Inertia in a way is the measure of how hard it is for something to change it's speed. Picture this, if I shot a 1 kilogram ball out of canon, you'd expect that there be come kick back. But if I shot a 10 kilogram ball out of the canon, you'd expect that there would be EVEN MORE kickback.

    • @berryj.greene7090
      @berryj.greene7090 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this explanation and thank you for it. Its the weirdest thing in some ways. I have always thought it was to do with the distance you are trying to move the weight but with no more available power. As in a larger circle has a longer circumference. Might be similar to the power to weight ratio in say a car.
      BTW - whilst trying to be smart I noticed that you seem to have spelled "clock" as "lock" Am I right or am I right?

  • @mayorWest24
    @mayorWest24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is a little off topic but I’ll ask the question because you briefly touched upon the beaded domes. I have four Kundo dome clocks. One is a 400-day clock with a glass dome that is cut at the edge and has a removable pendulum (so it was made circa 1950). The other three are quartz with a beaded glass dome. One is a quartz with a plastic dome, but it was advertised as vintage. Did Kundo ever make plastic domes or is it a cheap aftermarket replacement dome?

    • @berryj.greene7090
      @berryj.greene7090 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Vintage" is a tricky description and designed to obfuscate reality. Quartz is modern and often plastic. They work better as a timekeeper but lack artistic merit and intrigue. Things that are too perfect ....... Yeah! I'm not sure when the plastic domes first arrived but they are much later. Glass is fragile & like fascinating art is easily spoiled. Originality is sought by some collectors who look for clues to spot deception. The cut glass domes are the way it was done. More lately the glass was cut by heat and this leaves a (safer) beaded edge. A true torsion regulated clock with brass & steel clockwork is much more likely to be of true vintage.

      If the name looks like Kono it's most likely a Koma. This clock can cause a lot of frustration for beginners. The miniature Koma clocks were not well designed and are hard to get running (even for professional clock repair persons). If the spring is too long the pendulum will bottom out and rub on the base of the clock.

      You have to push or pull the pin through. I use a pair of parallel pliers: one jaw on one side of the pendulum top, the other jaw on the end of the pin. Squeeze the pliers and the pin will start moving through the hole. You can probably do the same thing with needle nose. Once you get it to move a little bit you should be able to grab it with the pliers and pull it the rest of the way out. They are in tight but you will be able to get it out.
