I am totally mezmerized by the talents of these two artists and their interpertation of these compositions. The transition from Ellington to Jobim is done seamlessly. Malone's guitar sounds like a heavenly harp at some points. And Hubert produces a haunting sound like a soft breeze. I can almost picture Jobim siting on a beach and hearing the sound of the waves and wind combining to produce a light, airy melody. It's just magical. I never tire of hearing these super talented gentlemen's skill and combining these classics from two cultures. Play on gentlemen!!
How about Eric Dolphy, or Jeremy Steig ? Hubert spent time in the Philadelphia Orchestra and was one of CTI records jazz stars. His brother Ronnie played sax and they had a sister who was a vocalist.
I just saw Mr. Laws last year at the Central Avenue, jazz fest. And he was still kicking and blowing it righteously. Now he would have to be up in his eighties now
@@jakemichaud9456 I'd only seen him with Ron Carter - but I immediately knew this was him just as the video shifted to his face... 10 years younger here!
The first time i saw him he played wit Stanley Turrentine , Ron Carter , Herbie Hancock at the Oakland coliseum. When he played Amazing Grace he made a believer out of me amazing to saw the least..1971 !!!!
about 6 yrs ago I played a jazz festival in Hawaii where Hubert was a headliner. His playing was beyond inspirational and piccolo, good god! His piano player told me he is extremely health and excercize conscience and I here that in his sound. and stamina. Hubert, Joe Farrell , James Moody I am so lucky to grow up listening to such fine flutists. Nobody sounds like a doubler to me.
nobody does what Hubert does. Is there anything he can't do? From tone to technique to creativity.......one of the finest overall MUSICIANS to grace us with music.
OH This is too much Black Excellence for my heart!!! I am smiling from ear to ear!! 2 black musicians playing a composition by another legendary musician....Duke Ellington. Nothing like this!!!
I first heard the artistry of Hubert laws on an old Quincy Jones album. The tune was Killer Joe and to this day I can honestly say that Hubert is still the finest jazz flute player I have ever heard. There are many awesome flute players in the world but Hubert in my opinion is the finest of the fine.
Hubert Laws!!! The greatest flute player in the world! Jazz or Classical flute. That is a direct quote from the great Quincy Jones autobiography. I have always been a huge Hubert Laws fan. I heard him play a concert in Chicago in 1971, the CTI All-star jazz festival! Hubert Laws was absolutely unbelievably amazing, I'll never forget his long unaccompanied cadenza. Thank you so much Hubert Laws!!!
I feel so relaxed listening to Hubert. Zen, Zen, Zen. He looks as though his body is free of tension. I have never seen such a relaxed face. The sound is so unique, you know it's Hubert in a few notes. He is one of my favourite flutists. The other one is Moe Koffman. Really, there is no first and second. They are both wonderful to my ears, with their own sounds and styles. What a duo Hubert and Russel make. World class and beyond. The rhythm is hypnotic.
It was this master Hubert Laws who encouraged Dave Valentin(another maestro on flute)to drop the sax and focus on the flute. Thank you Hubert!! Lets not forget Brian Lynch another maestro!!
Dear friends of Jazz and followers of Jazz music, I must remind you all that without the great father, shining example of the real musician of Jazz on flute Mr. James Moody, there will not be any further wonderful players as well Hubert Laws and some few others as a faithfull followers of the great Moody school but with personal stamp on it as Laws do it.
Totally 100% agree. Sad that he's no longer with us but Moody was the best and is the best. End of story. Check out the Master on his composition Cherokee 👍❤️🤗
European Classicism in sisterhood with African Aestheticism... HuLaws, the monarch of such union, is still forever unmatched - in this regard. 100% manups to the guitarist whose unselfish approach, knowledge and skill have laid the foundation for such flautistic excellence by Prof. Laws.
Can't get enough of the flautic splendor of Hubert Laws and his musical "twin" whose guitar accompaniment is second-to-none - in other words, unmatched even by the best.
Hubart Laws is a LEGEND....DO yourself a favor and check out Swan Lake with Chet Baker/ Hubart Laws and Jim Hall and a few others I can't recall.....IT IS A MASTER Piece...Jazz meets classic!
Actually for Many Years He appeared in Concert with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra .. Once I saw him with Rampal as a duet and with full orchestra.. amazing!
Great Hubert Laws Solo Work was and is always of great Inventness musical Deepness, Identity and Love.... a continuation of the great Flute Tradition of Inventors from Doppler to Gaubert to here and now. Jazz was always also commercial from Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Amstrong to Clare Fischer ,Joe Henderson, Chick Corea : Be lively Avantgarde AND Commercial, thats FINE with me.Great Chops develop, because You want them for the expression of the Soul. These People still know to play the Melody fresh and new. Great Musicians.
+wyndhl eodumegwu Hubert Laws has dressed Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" majestically in European Classical Attire, and has tenderly placed her down besides the vivacious foot of Corcovado Mountain in the Brazilian Savannah - intermittently he has.
Never, ever, have I heard a flute guitar duo sound more beautiful than this!
So beautiful! Excellence at its BEST!

I discovered him in a box full of records I bought. Such a lovely surprise 🥰🥰🥰
How about Eric Dolphy, or Jeremy Steig ? Hubert spent time in the Philadelphia Orchestra and was one of CTI records jazz stars. His brother Ronnie played sax and they had a sister who was a vocalist.
Welcome ❤I have loved him since a child and been playing since 13 y/o and he has helped me sing notes effortlessly.
See Hubert Laws with Claude Bolling on the Johnny Carson show. I think you'll be equally impressed.
The most tasteful thing my ears have listened to.
Jeeezzz... he must be about 74 here.. still the same breath control embouchure and sound as 50 years ago! It's a miracle!
I just saw Mr. Laws last year at the Central Avenue, jazz fest. And he was still kicking and blowing it righteously. Now he would have to be up in his eighties now

What a incredible and passionate performance by the iconic flutist Hubert Laws and guitarist Russell Malone. Absolutely beautiful.
I am so happy to be brought to the sublime pleasure of hearing these two masters! Thank you Algo!
The accompanist supports the soloist. He does not overpower him. He is the ideal accompanist.
Russell Malone is incredible
This is so well described, exactly how it is. 👏

Khurram Aziz:
Am thirsty to hear... poetic flute brilliance!😠
Hes good but his tone is quite muffled and fuzzy. I like sharp clear tones personally.
I agree -- and you're in that company too!
Very beatiful sound and melody. See you from Chile, southamerica 👍
You are a great inspiration for the future flutist to come thanks
Russell Malone made the guitar sound like a heavenly harp. Hubert Laws and James Moody, my two favorite flute players.
