I can see your point, that, from an engineering efficiency point of view, 2 strokes are dinosaurs. From my point of view, as a spectator, the GP 500 bikes ridden by Gardner, Schwantz, Lawson, Rainey and so many others, in the late 80's, was the most exciting bike racing that I have ever seen. That was because it was so bloody dangerous. F1 of that era, was similar. This modernised, electronically controlled, health and safety controlled, noise controlled garbage, that qualifies as racing these days, just doesn't interest me. It may be very efficient, but I find it very boring.
I see your point in that racing is less a matter of trying to control a mechanical beast that burns rubber or has difficult to control wheelies, but as the only thing that matters in racing is lap times, anything with less control is slower. Isle of Man TT is still extremely dangerous, but by the time you notice you've lost traction you already hit the wall.
You are totally right.Back in the day riding a GT.750 Kettle, along with some friends on 550 suzukis and 380,s were wonderful fun.Screaming and smoking, the ultimate fun
I don't see it as a race at all, if you mean that life is a race, to save our sanity. Insanity came in a long time ago. All there is, is the truth. Whatever that may be. I don't believe there is any time element attached to it. It is just the truth.
There is a bit too much minutiae in that link you provided, for me, and I don't know who those people are.
My assessment would be, that if we consider the world as a Globe and we focus, in this instance, on the human's and in-humans, that exist upon it. Then, we can see, that there is a, tiny minority, that are desperately trying to control the vast majority. That is because they believe, that they have achieved a sufficient accumulation of power and submission over the years. They believe that their, supposed, success, over a relatively short timescale, allows them to get away with it in the future.
History is littered with so many despotic leaders like that, who had exactly the same mindset. Gone now. Washed away. All of them, because of their lack of humility about what their real place actually was.
Well everybody wants this old, dangerous racing.. But nobody wants to see people burn up like Niki Lauda way back or die like Senna.. or Wayne ending up in a wheelchair. Kevin Schwantz got away but it could just as easily be him. You can't have both, just like the TT demonstrates. The drivers wouldn't mind
If you have a Classic 2t , RG , RD , NS 400 exe ...., YOU are the lucky ones .
They are in DEMAND !!!! no matter what
From what I’ve learnt about 2 strokes in general, intake filters are essential
Great points as always Matt!
I love how cheap single cylinder bikes are to repair.
so many people treat modern inline four stroke motorcycles as disposable.
Once they need rebuilding it's just more economical to sell it and get something newer.
I put same brand rod in my 125 rotary valve short circuit bike. They seem good quality and been around for ever
Thanks for your work
I have read that one can split the crank by grinding off the conrod and crankpin, then its much easier to pry the crankpins out. Obviosly the (old) conrods and crankpins get destroyd. Viable option or not?
Fucking hell no, are you mad?!
That's why I look after my DT125R! But fair enough it wouldn't be an easy bike to blow up, unrestricted it only has 22bhp at the crank which makes it a great reliable commuter bike. But some single cylinder 4 strokes have the same type of roller bearings in the big end as well which is strange, maybe it's to do with cost😐
Possibly a stupid question but why are 2-stroke conrods often copper plated but I've never seen this on a 4-stroke engine?
If your going to weigh the RG engine, then you may as well check it's temperature as well!
Gunna convert the RG500bto FI 4T then?
YAAYYYYYY MORE UPlOADS!!!. THERE GOES MY NIGHT OUT!!!!!!
Top gear on output shaft (due to fubared gear dogs that are needed for second gear) on a Kawa Z1 from the 70s will set you back 255€. One gear... old parts are quite expensive indeed.
I would think the age of the bike relates to cost of the parts in these cases. They know you are desperate and they are holding the cards.....they are kind of like a meth dealer at that point.
You know what I ordered bearing too but mine are ball bearings. For some reason no one including Toyota sells the idler pulley alone on 2003-2006 2AZ-FE engines for the Camry. Instead they want to sell you a $158 Tensioner Assembly. So I order 2 6203 R2 bearing for $4.58 and they are Japanese made Nachi bearing 6203 2NSE9C3. I ordered 2 even though I only need one. I think these will fit the alternator as well and they are cleared for up to 18K RPM. When you get to 2007 they sell just the idler and on the V6 models the have always sold them. On the Hi-Lux trucks and Tacoma they have always sold the idler as well! So not sure why they do not sell just the idler on this year. In the USA it does not matter if it is Ford, General Motors, Toyota most of the idler pulleys use some form of 6203 bearing. So I would imagine Holden, Adam Opel and many other's do much the same and are buying off the shelf common ball bearings. You can also find hybrids with ceramic ball bearing in this size as well. The failure mode for a pulley on a car is the grease in the bearings. Once the grease drys out or is washed out the bearing fails. A lot of people will pop the shields off every 2-3 years and repack with grease and if you do that these will last almost forever. Oh to test an idler you remove the belt and give the pulley a spin and if it spins freely instead of stopping almost immediately it means the grease has dryed out or washed out and the bearing will be going bad soon if it spins too freely and for too long! Hope this helps some of your fans!
I love 2 strokes and you're right.......they are shit.
Yeah pretty much me too
And me.
Hey anyway you could post where your getting the parts from. I have an RG500 Walter Wolf and am looking of acquire all the spare engine rebuild parts I can. Thanks
Yes I can - i'll bring it up in the next video
No don't do it he buys all and no one can find parts anymore... Unless he sells them for twice the amount... I know those guys buy all of the market and stash them and no one has parts left over. I ran into those guys with my Supra. They suck! I BUY ALL I CAN!!! FU find them your self.
These two companies are re-manufacturing RG500 gearbox and other parts www.maranello-engineering.com/eshop/stock-engine-c-8_17/?zenid=8ecb13f0c9d1d2dc87d9e8f81427c6e0 &

I have a Nova box....but its stupid money but as I've told Matt several times you can get stronger replacement 1st (long ratio), 2nd and 6th for £300 from Ellis Moore. I don't know anyone that has broken his gears. When I build up another 500 engine that's the option I'll be going for.
Liek I keep saying, its not my engine and not my money.....
I think you will find the largest 2T crowd in the offroad industry. Single cylinder 2T dirt application you aren't WFO at max RPM for more than like what 5 seconds?? On road bikes I get it they can be held flat out for longer which if you have jetting issues you are going to start melting pistons and snapping rings. There is a lot of money made rebuilding snowmobile engines which get held WFO for long long stretches and changing conditions that yes EFI has addressed to a point.
I understand the reliability of 4T but like anything if you ride it and don't maintain it you going to be spending money, ruin the head on a 4T and the costs go through he roof.
I like both but the 2T brings a smile to my face when it hits and scares the crap out of me.
Are diesel 2-strokes more reliable than the petrol ones?
funcounting hard to say but probably not
Diesel is a lubricant after all.
yes - generally
Maybe people should look into building 2T diesel bikes for messing around in the dirt or on the racetrack. But can you even have something that runs on diesel and has performance equivalent to rg500?
A 2-stroke diesel is a completely different beast to a 2-stroke petrol, it has a proper lubrication system & often has a mechanical timing system.
good update matt
Funny! it has spanish text! ("Kit de biela")
a crankshaft for a KTM EXC 200 (2007) cost around 500€
Fuck me LOL
my KTM single cylinder crank for an rfs motor costs +- 950 euro's. And they spread have crankshaft spread like butter.
I'm alittle late on this rg500 project but I'm gonna ask anyways, do you have the whole bike and the engine or just the engine? also what's the proper word for the crank holding plate thing?
"what's the proper word for the crank holding plate thing?" - its called a "crank holding plate thing" or a support plate???
- just the engine
@@thedirtyworkshop oh I thought there might be a fancy word for it lol.
Two strokes may be a technological dead end but it’s a road most of us old farts enjoying traveling down 👍🏻👏👏👏😎
four stoke single cylinder mx bikes blow up.They rev to 13 grand.Skirtless piston and an offset crank pin where the roller bearing big end and conrod sit.recipee for disaster lol
mx bikes always blow up ^^
but the 2 strokes do it more often xD
So does that mean the Honda NS400R is better.
Would love your thoughts on the adjustable compression cylinder heads from www.phatheadracing.com saw them on another channel and not sure if I’d be buying one, but I’m no engineer.
But are they H or I beams?
I beams of course LOL
107HP from a 500? With advancements in 4 stroke you can get a 600cc with around that much horsepower. Of course I'm not saying engines from the same era could be compared like that, but with this in mind where's the 600cc 2 stroke doing 200HP?? Any 600cc will probably last longer and be cheaper to maintain. And like you said Matt, a 500cc with the fuel consumption of a 1000cc, yet has half the horsepower of a 1000cc.
phillip galas Even the 1998 Yamaha R6 has 120HP.. with carburators. And 68Nm which isn't that bad.. At 11krpm and a shitty highup powerband which should be comparable to a 2 stroke
Who was making 600cc 4T race bikes in 1985 to compare with?
Scott Dunn The point is that 2 strokes are obsolete. 1985 they were alright, 1995 not so much and today it's even worse
Have you tried cmsnl?
Yes dude - they're just nearly all gone. Gears come straight from SUzuki - no-one keeps them in stock
i take it you absolutely want them to be brand spanking new? I can take a look for you in a local oldtimer scrapyard if you like
No just in better knick than these ones - we found an entire gearbox but the guy wanted £2000 for it.
Alright. I'll help you search :)
@@thedirtyworkshop Ouch, £2000 for a 2nd hand gear cluster thats painful, is the RG gear cluster specific to that model only? as i've found sometimes in the past (in the case of Yamaha at least) that manufacturers use the same gear cluster across various models (I assume to save costs) but change the primary drive setup to account for different engine configurations, it would take some research to check and may not be successful but you could be "quids in" if it works ------ i've converted a few Honda cb400 5 speed engines to 6 speed using cb250n clusters (very easy just need to relieve the crank/balancer hanger to clear the gears) successfully.
Call Del - he will borrow you his scales :D
Don't forget to take it's temperature with an eBay laser thermometer too!
you don't have to answer this if you don't want to but how come you don't fix bikes as a job as in repairs for the people and cheap bikes that need work even restoring them from what iv seen i believe you can fix almost anything on a bike you could make a lot of money fixing bikes being you've got the youtube you'd be quite creditable hell id take my bike to you just cause you never know it could be a video "the workshop hi guys were fixing this bike today its a bag of shite but heres whats wrong" (just heard in the video the guy who the engine belongs to)
Money. And people. I get paided a lot more ofr doing what I do now than a garage. And I hate dealing with peoples simple problems - I couldn't deal with telling people don't do that and 3 months later they have fucked because they did. I'd end up hitting them.
ah i see hope there paying you well you know your stuff and i wouldn't blame you poor bike and lastly any tips on self teaching everything i know about bikes is down to tinkering youtube and google but google is a rabbit hole of bs articles and miss informed people
You seem like you would like street sects
Not sure why I think that but I do
u like Little Big? they're like the russian version of Die Antwoord
Don't put more shit Suzuki gears in it....just buy the decent gears from Ellis Moore....they are actually cheaper as well..only downside is a bit of lead time. Those Suzuki gears have a habit of smashing a nice hole straight through the bottom of engine casing sometimes (I have repaired spare cases here!) when they fail. As for racing, I did over 30 race starts on mine over three years until I melted a piston with zero DNF's all on the same cranks but with the odd piston change. On the contrary my mate just had a low mileage crank which did an instant zero warning big end failure which resulted in destroying the cases - farm2.staticflickr.com/1877/44554216082_e4e5f1e1f9_b.jpg . So don't mess those cranks up....people want a fortune for a set of RG500 cases!
I think this bikes racing days are over - on that point, people should stop racing these things and make pattern parts, like cases etc.
And why does everyone think I'm going to mess up the cranks? Its not fucking hard, 2 strokes are easy remember LOL
I was having a joke - I don't think you'll mess them up. However, Grampain have rebuilt so many RG500 cranks over the last 20 years I would value their experience and not mess around and just pay them - I think from memory its £600 per crank (EDIT - that's wrong its actually for both cranks) which is fuck all. I still can't understand why you want to source fit more Suzuki gears - I have given you the info at least three times now. Not for your sake but for the engine owners sake.
Really ? People race much more valuable/rarer two strokes than the RG500. I can't wait to race mine again and thrash the living fuck out of it. It's only a motorbike and the best place to live that theatrical experience is on a grid full of other two strokes. Unfortunately most RG500's sit in garages being wanked over....which is a shame!
"I was having a joke" - I know dude, I made a joke as well. Look at us 2 jokers! LMAO!
"I still can't understand why you want to source fit more Suzuki gears "
- again cost. The gears are fine for street use, and like I say this bike isn't going back to the track.
"I have given you the info at least three times now. Not for your sake but for the engine owners sake."
- Yes and the first time I sent the message along - and I didn't say this has been dismissed. I am the middle man here, when I say 'welcome back to the shop, and here we have some Ellis Moore gears" - you can be as smug as you want to be, but until then - my hands are tied.
You'll just have to wait and see.....
First bellends! 😂
