Steven Stayner’s brother didn’t commit the Yosemite murders until well after Steven’s abduction. Steven had already died from a motorcycle accident when his brother committed the murders.
I can't believe it. Just today I found a digital copy of his book on my files and I was checking it out, thinking about this case and now this. Can't wait to watch it.
I personally don’t think jealousy or resentment towards his brother did anything to cause him to become a killer. If anything all it did was speed up the process. Honestly, just look at his face and you know that he is wrong. Many killers can hide their true face and this is usually seen in serial killers, but many killers are much more obvious and it is absolutely seen in their look. Is every person who look crazy or wrong a killer, obviously not, but be careful. If it’s not a matter of mental retardation and they have a look of something gone wrong in their physical characteristics, namely the face, then there’s something to watch carefully. It may sound ridiculous or silly or whatever, but there’s something to the look of a person that is telling to their character. I’d bet that even before his brother went through his ordeal, this psychopath was harming animals. Which brings me to a small final point. If you have a child who harms animals don’t protect them from getting the psychological help they need. Not only to get a handle of their mental health but to understand it and hopefully prevent a future killer of humans. Also, and don’t ever dismiss this, killing animals is never anything to brush aside. Killing of an innocent life wether it’s a baby or animal is fundamentally the worst thing a person can do. It’s literally the harming or destruction of life in its most innocent and vulnerable and this is a sign of evil at its core.
"I personally don’t think jealousy or resentment towards his brother did anything to cause him to become a killer. If anything all it did was speed up the process." You're exactly right. Cary started killing about a decade after Steven died in a car accident, and he was fantasizing about killing women before Steven's abduction. People like categories. People like simple explanations with all of the plot points resolved at the end and for everything to make sense. It almost never works out that way.
I was glad the family got a chance to tell what they were comfortable talking about. I was disappointed Cary's mom wouldn't say a word about Cary, but it's her call. I was also glad the show presented the fact that Cary had been having violent fantasies about females as young as 7 years old. I was going to guess about 8, and it would have ruined the show for me if they'd carried on with the idea that Steve's abduction had something to do with Cary. Cary was already fantasizing before Steven was even abducted. I'd love to read the mitigation report presented to the jury. Interesting that serious problems occurred in the family lineage. All in all it was a good documentary.
How much heartache can one family endure? I really applaud them for their courage to tell their side of the story, and relive some of the most difficult and painful moments of their past. To be made a national spectacle and then turned into nightly entertainment with a fantastical "retelling" of the events of Steven's abduction must be very disorienting and a nuisance to put up with. I like the way the documentarians include the actors who sensationalized the story by acting out the dialogue and records from Steven and Cary. It really displays how our fascination with childhood trauma and consumption of true crime can really get distorted when we experience it through the lens of a camera and a crafted script. That made-for-tv drama series significantly tinted the way in which we perceived Steven, Cary, and the entire Stayner family as a whole. I'm glad I watched this to get some better clarity. The despicables who were allowed to bully Steven Stainer after his return to school about his having been molested needed to be dealt with in no uncertain ways as do all bullying types who are damaging other young students in schools everywhere, everyday.

When you're dealing with children the press should have some standards in regards to press. Maybe cameras shouldn't have been allowed in child abduction cases. I do want to know what happened to the little kid he saved???
I remembered my mom watching TV movie I was young and then what happened to Cary all of this so sad. I forgot too this was all in my small city of Merced .
This is so sad 😔! If this man would've kidnapped a girl, they would've put him under a bus. They gave this sick, disgusting, POS 20months for kidnapping two 5 year old boys he repeatedly m o lested. The trauma they both experienced is something some folks will never understand. I was sexually assaulted by my teacher as a child, I still see psychologists and take medicine to help me deal with mental issues at 36, it was awful. The adults in that situation definitely failed them both.
He got 20 months because that’s what the max amount was in the 80s,regardless of the victims gender. Crimes against children back then didn’t have the same consequences compared to how the laws are now towards children.
Although I know ppl didn't mean it in this way, it makes me sad to see all these comments of , " omg this is heartbreaking, so tragic, so much trauma for one family, etc, ...and then right after that , to then say " I can't wait to watch ! " 😔
@@moniqueloomis9772 It's an intriguing and engaging story, and many of us find it educational and therapeutic. It's also respectful to the victims to bear witness to the tale, as the victims' families are kind enough to share it and have been telling the world for decades, lest we forget their suffering...lest it go unnoticed. By the way, what brought you here?
The human mind is a complicated machine. We're capable of experiencing many emotions at once, and many of us are inherently intellectually curious and actively seek opportunities to be educated on any given topic, regardless of its nature. I can't wait to watch it either, but the story still saddens me to no end. It doesn't negate any other emotions or trivialize the multiple tragedies.
My name is Ricky. I was Stevens best friend and was with him the day he was kidnapped. We went to Charles Wright Elementary School together and walked home together. I remember his mom Kay calling my mom to ask if Steven was at my house. The rest is history. He was gone. The story went global. We use to play together at each others homes and I Remember there was this lady names Elenor across the street from me. Her back yard was called the jungle. It looked just like one. We made a tree house and use to hang out up there. Great memories , not so great ending.
I’m really looking forward to this. I’ve watched “I Know My First Name Is Steven” several times. In fact,, Frederic Forrest did such an outstanding job playing Kenneth Parnell, it was hard for me to see him in other shows and movies.
I thought it was Arliss Howard, although I can see why you'd mistake the two. Interestingly enough, Forrest played a Parnellesque character in a movie called "Where are the Children?" It was made in 1986.
One thing I learned from watching the TV she Teddy Ruxpin..(Chad Allen) was on it..doing a PSA. He said to keep a few quarters on you..& have your parents teach you how to use a pay phone..i know there's not many around anymore..but, still.. And, i was watching America's Most Wanted on night..(age12) One thing I remember John Walsh saying..if a stranger DOSE get into the car..try to grab the keys from the igntion..and, throw them away (from the car)..but, i heard this a long, long time ago. Now i know most cars don't have 🗝 keys anymore
I just finally watched this and it was a terribly sad story. Unfortunately, since the IMDB message boards no longer exist I have to come to trailers on youtube to ask my questions, such as: Does anyone know where the haunting images of Steven standing in front of various buildings came from, who took them and why? They are haunting and have a sad kind of beauty to them but they seem more like "ART" photgraphs, certainly more than snapshots or press photos, and are used to great effect throughout the show. I just wonder if anyone knows about them? Thanks.
This story of Steven Stayer was so sad. He saved another child's life and his life wasn't the same. People wouldn't leave him alone and people just didn't understand what was going on with this whole case. Timmy White was saved by Steven Stayner and he became a hero and he died at the age of 24 in a car accident and this story was so sad b/c Carey Stayner became a serial killer. They made a TV movie called My First Name Is Steven about his ordeal of being kidnapped. Nobody knew. People just didn't know. Sad story b/c Timmy White Died and people didn't understand. Just leave this poor family alone they suffered alot.
I’m sorry but the sister is insane too. The fact she can openly publicly say “we were jealous” of Steven’s attention without realizing and processing the horror Steven went through.
She's speaking from the point of view she had as a kid. Key terms: were/was. The entire family has been processing Steven's torment for decades now. Use some critical thinking and pay attention.
i really feel so bad for there mother my heart is with her i do feel that she kept all pain in her heart she hold her tears all the time she surly loved her kids the good one and the bad one and you have to love your kids no matter what she didn't want to speak about Cary because its her son and i understand that, people will judge her if she said bad thing or good thing about him

The despicables who were allowed to bully Steven Stainer after his return to school about his having been molested needed to be dealt with in no uncertain ways as do all bullying types who are damaging other young students in schools everywhere, everyday.
They are from my hometown and I’ve heard so much about the Steven Stayner kidnapping over the years but I’m so looking forward to seeing everything in depth
What happened to the boy he saved???
@@cheri7054 Unfortunately, he died of a pulmonary embolism in 2010 at the age of 35. By all accounts, he had lived a good life up until then.
@@jackmort5015 That's really sad but glad he lived a good life. Too sad for both boys and their families
@@cheri7054 In adulthood, Timmy White became a Deputy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, married, and had two children.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 Thanks
Oh, I know this story..definitely gonna watch this.
I hope they talk about the suspicious death of one of the uncles too. Such a sad story for this family
wait what. please explain if u dont mind
@@MsDudette21 I’m pretty sure the older brother who ended up being a murderer was living with an uncle or something like that and he ended up dying. Can’t remember specifically if what or if people suspected Carey
@@ImaLilMonster2 no he's alive in prison
Son kidnapped for seven years and then he’s dies in car accident while the other your son becomes convicted serial killer….Wow their family never had peace….I feel really sorry for their mother in particular I know had took a toll on her over the years.
Wow I remember that mini series. We were all so scared of getting kidnapped.
When you're dealing with children the press should have some standards in regards to press. Maybe cameras shouldn't have been allowed in child abduction cases. I do want to know what happened to the little kid he saved???
He passed away in 2010. Check out Wikipedia. Timothy White.
@@jackmort5015 So sad!!!!
Is this what “I know my name is Steven “ based on ?!? Oh my gosh 😱😱😱
I remember hearing Cary had problems which may not have been related to Steven's disappearance and homecoming.
You heard correctly.
What a trailer!!! Wow.
I remembered my mom watching TV movie I was young and then what happened to Cary all of this so sad. I forgot too this was all in my small city of Merced .
i’m so glad i didn’t see this trailer until after i watched the doc
This reminds me of the show called “the family” on ABC. I wish they renewed it for a second season
That show was so, so good
@@FoxHollow928 I know I don’t know why it was cancelled that was the best cliff hanger for a season finale
I loved that show too! It was getting so good before it was cancelled
honestly ABC cancelled a lot of good shows...The Family, Happy Endings, Trophy Wife
I loved that show.
@@Sylveon1002 Wow. Didn't know that.
I’m curious about this story
Although I know ppl didn't mean it in this way, it makes me sad to see all these comments of , " omg this is heartbreaking, so tragic, so much trauma for one family, etc,
...and then right after that , to then say
" I can't wait to watch ! "
😔
😓 You're right. It's sad that some find it entertaining.
The fact that the 4 subjects in this whole ordeal are either dead or in prison
I know my first name is Steve. I remember that TV movie
Hulu is crushing it lately
Ok. I will watch.
Can't wait for all the commercial breaks 🙄
I’m really looking forward to this. I’ve watched “I Know My First Name Is Steven” several times. In fact,, Frederic Forrest did such an outstanding job playing Kenneth Parnell, it was hard for me to see him in other shows and movies.
I thought it was Arliss Howard, although I can see why you'd mistake the two. Interestingly enough, Forrest played a Parnellesque character in a movie called "Where are the Children?" It was made in 1986.
@@jackmort5015 - you’re right. Not sure how I confused them.

What's the title of the background song
Wow now it a whole Hulu show I know there a 2020 show about it
I watched the 20/20 special on the family. Very sad circumstances for the family all around.
@@jaguar5198 I did too it so crazy and sad
I just finally watched this and it was a terribly sad story. Unfortunately, since the IMDB message boards no longer exist I have to come to trailers on youtube to ask my questions, such as: Does anyone know where the haunting images of Steven standing in front of various buildings came from, who took them and why? They are haunting and have a sad kind of beauty to them but they seem more like "ART" photgraphs, certainly more than snapshots or press photos, and are used to great effect throughout the show. I just wonder if anyone knows about them? Thanks.
Does anybody know the song title or artist of the music used in the opening credits of each episode?
Song: I Got a Name by Jim Croce
Someone please tell me the name of the song in episode 2 , they play it in the background nearly the entire time
Type the lyrics you recognize into TH-cam search.

The reverberation of evil and trauma.
Why do they always have to put constant dramatic music over everything
Great trailer.
His brother’s crimes. Shiver
I’m sorry but the sister is insane too. The fact she can openly publicly say “we were jealous” of Steven’s attention without realizing and processing the horror Steven went through.
Yeah, that struck me as odd too
She's speaking from the point of view she had as a kid. Key terms: were/was. The entire family has been processing Steven's torment for decades now. Use some critical thinking and pay attention.
@@janedoll3237 It struck you as odd because you're obviously another thinker...
Poor Steven didn't stand a chance
Does anyone know the intro theme song to this docuseries? Not played in this video though

It was originally produced for NBC.
