I've come to you to after gifting mine to a top,top professional keyboard musician ,so I now get the chance to watch it played at a level that is off the scale, whilst I had it as an inheritance from my father who was a music nut and would give and receive music paraphernalia, I made the decision that is was made to be played, and although I loved it to just look at ,its made to be played and not an ornament . So I have the pleasure regularly to see it played as do many, many other people to who it has brought a lot of pleasure to.
When I was 8 years old, I compose some tunes on this kind of piano (I had the tiny model with the Ré broken) that I recorded on microcassette to be able to play with the speed... It is fun to see this kind of creations used professionnaly, it makes me want to do this again...
Hi Hainbach! I like that Intro Track a lot, also the Setup at 6:00 mins, the background light make it rly relaxing, pls do more of those, i like to watch you makin music!
I can't help it, somehow I expected a statue of Beethoven on a toy piano. Just kidding 😉 Really great sounds. I always loved the bell sound of those old mechanical clocks that you put on top of a sideboard. My dad has some of them and from time to time he allows one to ring. Bell rods simply sound gorgeous. The pitched-down sounds in your set remind me of Pantha Du Prince, very very rich and warm and roomy (don't know why this word pops into my mind). I also found a toy piano (maybe even a michelsonne) in the end of the track _plastic people_ on the album _there is love in you_ by _four tet._ It struck me, just before falling to sleep. Once again: Thank you, Hainbach, for showing us the beauty and love that lives in your art.
I'm having strange visions of some 1970s executive keeping that first one on his desk and gradually wearing away at his secretary's will to live. The way that these pianos open appeals to me in some way that I can't explain . The way that the backboard slides into place just seems so graceful and thought out. And the sound is definitely nostalgic - despite the fact that I'm twenty and the toy piano I had as a kid being a horrible neon-green general MIDI thing. Perhaps some sort of osmosis from pop culture, where the sound of a toy piano is audio shorthand for "children"?
Beautiful collection you have there! I bought a 25 key one for my son in the early 2000s when he was born for about 20 or 30 euros (I bought it for me really but let him play with it... big mistake!! a baby hammering away at it broke a tine or two!!!).. they were very cheap in France in those days and I saw a few for about 50 or 60 euros for a few years and stupidly never got another one... mine is in dire need of repair... couple of broken hammers & tines, top a bit broken... must watch your other videos about it... I also have a very rare Martenot Clavi Harp I paid about 15 euros for with only one missing "key"... the two played together sounds absolutely incredible, really creepy!... a friend of mine with a massive collection of pristine instruments found one in perfect condition recently for less than 50 euros I think... he has the best luck finding instruments...I must repair mine... the tines look very hard to repair properly without losing resonance.. do you know anything about repairing tines?
@@Hainbach Thanks! yeah you're probably right... I think I remember reading or watching something about it & it wasn't simple.. must find that info again.. watching your video reminded me how good they sound... do you know the clavi harp? sounds lovely too but thinner and more ethereal, like a spindly kalimba
You can buy replacement tines for a Rhodes electric piano online, there are charts that explain how to cut them to the right length. They are $10-30 each and probably work very similar!
I went searching around specifically for videos on how these were made traditionally with the plans to build a strung instrument similar to this (hammered zither). I was a little disappointed when you said that you wouldn't take it apart.... And then you did 🤣
TIL a style of playing on tiny piano's... For some reason, it did not occur to me that you could get such wonderful melodies and sounds from such a "toy" piano...Very similar to a glockenspiel...with a twist.
I had a toy piano that had only 3-5 white keys, the black keys did nothing, and no matter which key you pressed, it would play a note out of a melody, like it had a music box kind of mechanism inside. I always loved the sound of it, but can't find anything like it anywhere... Would anyone in the comments know about this? I remember it was yellow, plastic, and smaller than the smallest one Hainbach shows in this video.
You have a marveling collection! I only have an 80's Jaymar in great condition. It's very loud and clunky. Though it could probably be used in parts of Die Zauberflote.
These sound like a pale kid with empty eye sockets knocking on your window during the thunderstorm and whispering "daddy, why did you bury me, I'm not a miscarriage, I love mommy but I hate you". Yeah, that :D
Hey! I just discovered your channel, great stuff! I always wanted to know what it would sound like if you put a magnetic pickup in front of the reeds on one of these, similiar to a fender rhodes/wurlitzer. Maybe you could do it! :)
Hi Hainbach. I have a Michelsonne with some broken tines. Do you or anyone reading the comments know which material I can use to replace them? Herwig from Austria
@@herwigthelen6304 It's very difficult to replace individual tines. The original entire sound rod mechanism is made by heating up the metal and inserting the tines. You can't just hammer punch out the old broken ones and put in new ones. A skilled metalworker might be able to drill out the old one and find a way to get the new one in but there's a lot of thinking to do.
Good evening. I am always impressed with your knowledge of toy pianos. In fact, I have a Michelsonne with a broken steel fiddle, do you know how to replace or repair the fiddle? Please let me know if you do. from Japan.
You mean a broken tine? The only way I know is to find a replacement, or ask a metal worker to make you one. But maybe contact the Michelsonne museum in France?
@@Hainbach Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am. There was a rebar that sounded crazy and was repaired with solder, but I couldn't help but notice that the sound was different, so I was touching it and it broke off from the thinned base. I thought I could replace it, so I bought another old Michelsonne and tried to replace it with an iron fiddle that sounded the same, but when I hit the end of the iron fiddle with a hammer, the end just crushed and wouldn't come off. So I messaged you to see if you could help me figure out how to remove and install the iron tines. I did not think of the Michelsonne Museum. I would like to inquire if I can find the contact information. Thank you very much.
This is a long shot, but what, if anything, is the piece played at ~4:20 onwards? it's so pretty and calming, and i'd love to know if it's from something or if it's simply something Hainbach composed on the spot. Fantastic video either way!
HAINBACH Thank you kindly for the response! I'm biased, but I think this is so deserving of being a full piece. It's simple but just so beautiful! Keep doing your thing, this is one of my favorite channels on TH-cam ❤️
HAINBACH Are you talking about Lynda Michele's room? Perhaps the place on French TV is not a museum. It is the room of Lynda's Michelsonne collection. I visited this place at the end of November 2019. It was a really nice space.

You just made me shout ...mijn g*d ..holy f*ck ! .. I wanted to use a toy piano for a churchbell in a score for a saint nicolaus (the dutch/german one) movie .. en than this vid came up
It's subjective. Many toy piano fans would not be at all attracted to the delicate and clean simple chimey sound of the Kawai metal tube system, and the complete lack of interesting resonance within the piano body. Kawai have gone for build quality, true piano-like action, perfect tuning and tonal consistency at the expense of everything else. Some would say it's in the everything else that the toy piano magic lies.
holy damn that 37 key version kicks ass it sounded amazing I couldn't believe it
I love the sound of the lower keys
Yes, that is by far the best-sounding toy piano I've heard to date. Lovely!

I am a bit impressed by the pianos, how smooth this voice sounds opening the video and also by how shiny and smooth his hair looks.
the first song he played on the thirty seven key made me feel nostalgic but i’d never heard it before and i just felt joy and happiness
What a beautiful sound ( the 37 keys ), just absolutely gorgeous!

There's some great toy piano sounds in Keyscape.... it's possibly favourite part of the whole library. Superb video. thx.
I'm glad I have two 49 upright, one Grand 49 and one 37 original (not bontempi). I love all of them !
The 37 model is just fantastic.
Man, that's great, I wasn't even aware of such kind of pianos, still these are useful

There's a song that uses the sound of these toy piano's: 'Hilversum 3' by Herman Van Veen (it's in Dutch)
If the toy piano in your haunted house is in tune, you're living with casper the friendly ghost. If it is out of tune, i have bad news for you.

Those Michelsonnes should be recapped for more bottom end. Solid 220uF across the board.
Oh nice tip for the rust, use aluminium foil and rub over rusty parts. The rust will disappear aluminium foil is softer and will not cause any damage.
