      Make Sephiroth take turns while Hazard just says "What a dumb idea, why should I wait when I've got an opportunity right now?"

      I played this back in the day, and the gameplay is so generic, repetitive and dull it becomes a total slog after the first couple hours. In a lot of ways it’s like a somewhat less cringey and misogynistic version of Duke Nukem Forever, perfectly competent on a technical level but thinks it can coast solely on a “too cool for the room” attitude and a handful of cheesy one-liners.

      I’d wager the only accurate part of your comment is that most people forgot Eat Lead existed (assuming they even knew it existed in the first place). And if they do remember it, it’s probably from seeing dozens of copies in the bargain bin every time they went to Gamestop rather than actually playing it. That’s how I discovered it, I found it brand new for like $10 at Walmart maybe a year after it came out. Spent a weekend beating it (the runtime’s less than 15 hours) then tried selling it to Gamestop, but they wouldn’t take it because they still had a bunch of new copies they couldn’t get rid of. From what I’ve been able to find it sold less than 50,000 units, and if it has any kind of fanbase then they’ve been extremely quiet for the past 14 years.

    I always took the Marathon logo to be a nod to Konami. They sometimes used both a red background with a flick at the end (kinda looked like a knife blade) and also had that double -bacon strip- helix type logo so seemed a combination of both of those. Plus with the "25 year" timeline then MGS wasn't far off that and by that point Snake had appeared in other games (Ape Escape and MGS had a crossover in each brand, for example) and was an action game star "face" of the company so fit as an example to parody.

    I'd argue Max Payne is a parody while taking itself (mostly) absolutely seriously. There's a few parody jokes in it, but it's dry and played seriously and it absolutely works. Not to mention that fourth wall break during the drug trip sequence where Max sees he's in a video game.

    • @shawnfields2369
      @shawnfields2369 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A parody? Max Payne was supposed to be a parody? If that series was a parody, that takes itself seriously, they did a great job. Because I couldn't tell the difference. I thought it was a serious shooter game series. But the awful movie with Mark Ruffalo(or was it Mark Wahlberg?) missed the point, and just looked like a bootleg version of itself, although I think Marky Mark didn't do too bad as Max Payne, just not great...or anything nearing a competent movie. But then again, MOST video game movies completely miss the point, like Doom, ALL of the live action Resident Evil movies, the Silent Hill movies, the second MK movie(not the first one because they nailed that one), the crappy Uncharted movie with Tom Spider Man as Nathan Drake, and Mark Whalberger as Victor "Sully" Sullivan.
      Which doesn't make any sense. Tom Holland was way too young to be Nate, and Mark Whalberg wasn't old enough to be Sully. Seriously, Whalberg should've been Drake, and Holland should've been nowhere near the movie. But the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movies got the characters right, surprisingly enough. At first, you think that while Jim Carey is talented, that he may not be the best guy out there to play Dr. Eggman, but nope, he proved people wrong, and completely nails Eggman's personality perfectly. Not sure about Keanu Reeves being Shadow the Hedgehog, but that could work, if they do it right.

      @@shawnfields2369 well, noir as a genre has been so overdone and replicated today that it's almost impossible to do a true noir story without making it a parody in some way. I seem to remember an early idea for Max Payne was it was going to be set in the 70s and be called Dick Justice or something. It evolved into something more sombre set in the modern day (then), but you can still see Dick Justice playing on TV in Max Payne 2. I mean, even think of his name: Max Payne is kind of on the nose. I think Max Payne proves parody is not exclusive to comedy.
      As for video game movie adaptations; I think movie studios have only just let go of their subconscious belief video games are for kids. Gamers are attracted to well written and compelling stories, just like movie goers. Being a different format doesn't change that 👍

    • @shawnfields2369
      @shawnfields2369 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Fyrehart97 I agree, video games aren't just for kids, they're for everyone to enjoy. That's why we have this thing called "the ESRB Ratings System", it's supposed to help prevent kids from playing T/M/A-O, rated games. But I guess I never caught on that Max Payne was a parody. I thought it wasn't too serious from the name, but I missed out on the first 2 Max Payne games. The Max Payne games do look like a typical noir detective story, or something out of a cop movie. And since Max was a cop himself, it makes sense. Max Payne also sounds like it could've been a GTA in-game parody, playing on a TV in the games. And yeah, the people making these game based movies need to learn how to make a movie based on something like Resident Evil, Doom(since apparently, getting The Rock to be the main character was their "idea"). And while I like The Rock, and he is a badass, and wouldn't make a bad Doom Guy, his character in the Doom movie was just acting like he was supposed to be in a Gears of War movie, or something. But I love the first MK movie, that had Johnny Cage, Liu Kang and Sonya, and Raiden, and the best live action Shang-Tsung they could've had. But It's a shame they managed to mess up the sequel. It's like catching lightning in a bottle, but trying a second time, only to miss completely. Annihilation had WAAAAYYYYYYY too many characters, and the guy who played Johnny Cage was going to come back and play Johnny again, but when he read the script, and saw that his character DIES in the first 2 minutes of the movie, he refused. And they had to recast literally everyone except for Robin Shou, who returns as Liu Kang. But the others, yes the others, were recast. I didn't even realize that as a kid, because Johnny Cage gets killed by Shao Khan in the opening of the movie, like a chump. I know he has an attitude in the games, but he's not a weakling either. He's like Dan Hibiki from Street Fighter, but less annoying. I know in MK people died violently all the time, but in the movie's opening sequence? That's not even enough time to remember what happened since the last film. And the 2021 MK CG movie was basically just Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion, and nothing else of importance. The people behind these movies have to learn how to make the movies properly, and do their research, not just make it for kids because it's an E-rated game, like Sonic. That's how you do video game based movies right. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, or the first MK movie. Sure, the MK movie was PG-13, but it works because it focuses more on the characters and their journey. It's like playing the games and going through their arcade mode, to get their ending. Also, there's that one guy who gets killed by Goro, and then Johnny does one of his signature moves, the Nut Punch, from the MK games, on Goro, and beats him that way. Sure Goro looked...weird in that movie, but at least we had Goro in an MK movie. And there's also the SF Van-Damme live action movie, which was the late, great, Raul Julia's final performance, as M. Bison, who was easily the best part of that movie, and nails Bison's personality perfectly. But there's also an animated SF2 movie that's actually really good, and was presented like an animated series. Now RE needs something like that, so we can finally leave the live action RE movies in the trash, where they belong.

      @@JohnSmith-ox3gy I also agree...but, I played this game when it first came out in 2009. Not great, but not that bad. It's just a failed parody game that stars one of the cast members of "Arrested Development", as the main character, in a sort of Doom/Duke Nukem type game. It's not that bad...it's just not as good as Deadpool's game. Which I also thought wasn't great, but just good. So this game's like a 7, and Deadpool is like, a 7.5. But at least Deadpool got 3 movies, and Matt Hazard couldn't even get ONE movie. And Wade is a way better superhero than Matt. Wade gets to team up with Wolverine for his upcoming movie, Matt Hazard is just irrelevant now. Deadpool managed to get Ryan Reynolds to play him in 3 movies, meanwhile, Matt could only get one of the guys from Arrested Development(which is a great show, fyi, but this game was a few years after it ended), and Nolan North plays Deadpool in the game, so he's clearly making a comeback. Too bad Matt couldn't... but he tried though. It's just that the game tries, but it ultimately fails. And also, Deadpool managed to travel back in time and prevent the worst thing from happening to both himself and Wolverine, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", which also had Gambit, in it too. But it still sucked. But ironically, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game is better than the actual movie it's based on. Not that hard to do, but I mean X-Men Origins Wolverine is pretty damn bad...and Wolverine is my favorite member of the X-Men too. But I'm glad Deadpool prevented the movie from happening, or else we may not have gotten the second Deadpool movie and the
      Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

      Same here. I mainly played it because I heard that Neil Patrick Harris and Will Arnett were going to be in it, was one of the main reasons why I wanted to play the game, and I loved playing it for awhile, but I had to take a break because I kept getting annoyed by how frustrating the games cover mechanics can be. But the humor was great, and Will Arnett does a better job than I was expecting, but I already enjoyed his work on Arrested Development, and as Lego Batman, and I enjoyed his work as Bojack Horseman too. And I'm glad the game got a sequel, but this game is forgettable at times, but I wouldn't say it's bad. It's just not very good. Just average at best, like a 6 or 7/10. Because we all know Will Arnett can most definitely do better, but he still killed it as Matt Hazard in this game. I don't regret playing the game either, but I did enjoy the humor and hated the cover mechanics, until I learned how to just blind fire from cover and just got through the game that way. The game's nothing special, but it does try a bit harder than most games that try to do things like this. The humor and voice acting are the best parts. It tries to be like a parody of things like Gex, Duke Nukem, but while it doesn't really "succeed" at parodying those games, it did an alright job for 2009.

    The game gets crazier as it goes along, so a bit unfair to end it there.
    I enjoyed it back then, but it was really of it's time. Parodying contempary games and movies. As most parodies that rely on references they don't age well.

    This game is not bad….. It’s actually really good. The controls aren’t the best, and it can get a bit repetitive, but it’s funny and very enjoyable. Don’t pass this one up because they’re saying it’s bad.

      Don't worry, I didn't at the time this game came out, I was 16, and was already a fan of Will Arnett, because of Arrested Development. And because I love parodies. Sure the game could be frustrating at times, but the humor and acting are both on point. And I really enjoyed Arnett's Batman voice throughout the whole game. And I'm glad the game got an actual sequel too. Haven't played myself, but I did enjoy this game. But it's somewhat forgettable at times, but I will say while I was expecting just an okay job, from the people involved with the game, it was a lot better than I expected back in 2009. I'd definitely play the sequel though. And Will Arnett is a great actor/comedian already(like you didn't already know that, from his iconic roles on Arrested Development, and as Lego Batman, and Bojack Horseman, even though that wasn't a thing at the time). But still I agree, not one of their better Worse Games Ever episodes. Not a bad episode, but Matt McMuscles does a better job covering this game.

    Helpful hint: If you want to make a spoof/parody of something, make sure that your product is BETTER than the ones you're spoofing. It falls amazingly flat otherwise, since all you're really doing is reminding your audience of a better time to spend their time. The real killer of this game is monotony. Strip away the premise , jokes and the story, and you'll quickly realize how boring it is.

    It's not a bad game by any means, but it has a rather simple gameplay and a surprising lack of variety in mechanics.
    The story and parodies are definitely the best part of this game, in fact I think almost every level had a unique tweak and of course references to other genres and games.
