Thank you for doing this. This was very helpful. I have used an allard toe off bilateral braces. Both mine broke so we went into the blue rocker. I tried the carbon fiber brace you showed here but couldn't wear it. The bar is on the inside of the ankle and non adjustable. It cut into my ankle. I am considering the hard plastic braces because carbon fiber breaks. My orthotist wanted me to try the blue rocker before doing the hard plastic. I have shin splints which I am thinking the carbon fiber caused. The plastic goes behind the leg and doesn't put pressure on the shin. It is such a pain to take the brace on and off every time I get in the car to drive. I wish they had locking hinges like a tool box where you could pop them open for driving and lock them for walking. I am not a candidate for the spring hinges.
The carbon fiber braces will eventually fail with higher activity patients. I've had a few crack, but most are still out there working well. They also have a lower weight limit. I would recommend a rigid design like the Turbo FRAFO if you have issues with breakage in the future.

However I had to quit wearing them on a daily basis due to shin pain (they have double padding on each) and a broken ankle strap. I do wear them on occasion without the ankle strap. This summer I need to get a solution figured out. Due to the cost of the braces and the insurance changing I have to commit to one kind of brace. My Blue Rockers were about $1,000 each. Are the Turbo FRAFO that you suggested expensive? I don't want to make a $2,000 mistake. My orthotist didn't want me to go to the rigid plastic AFOs. He didn't think I would be happy with them because of the differences in energy return compared to the carbon fiber. I That's why I agreed to try the Blue Rockers. +NudgingCharlie13 The Turbos cost about the same, around $900 each. The enegy storage and return of prefabricated carbon AFOs is overrated. The carbon must be rigid to get any real return, just look at a prosthetic foot to see what kind of rigidity is required for real energy storage and return. I've had many patients travel from across the US. I agree it's expensive and not many have this as an option. The secret to effective, rigid plastic braces is in the alignment.
My son was not a toe walker as a young child. He is 11 now and started toe walking about 2-3 years ago. After the last 6 months we started really taking notice because everyone started asking us. I asked him the other day if he could do a squat on his heals. He struggled and could not. But he could do a great squat using on his toes? Lately he is walking on his toes 90% of the time. He can walk on his heals but prefers the toes. He is has always been very athletic, walked at 10 months old. He is a very fast runner. I am going to make an appt tomorrow because I am not sure why over the last 3 years what the change has been? But we live in FL and I am leary of doctors here. So any advice would be appreciated..
dmacinnis1 Hello. I haven't heard of delayed toe walking before, so I would be concerned there may be an underlying condition. I would see a pediatric orthopedic surgeon for a comprehensive evaluation. I don't blame you for being wary, but that's the place to start. Muscle and nerve testing of his lower extremities may prove it's nothing, but get him looked at.
+saiful syazwan mohf fadzil I suppose you're talking about the posterior trimline. I don't have a specific landmark I use. For the low profile you can trim at or just above the Achilles insertion. You can use either design for most cases, but I always use the higher trims for Achilles rupture or tendinitis.
That is not uncommon. There are cheap versions that don't hold up well. I use the Otto Bock Walk On AFO mostly. They hold up well. I haven't had one break in years

Are there signifiacant differences in treating peroneal nerve palsy versus restricted dorsiflexion due to hypertonicity in the calf?
Yes, with peroneal pasly alone you do not need a plantarflexion stop, or bumper in the back. It is needed with hypertonic calf muscles.
