    One tip I picked up by watching Red Sea's "how to" videos on these test kits. For Magnesium, the titration is complete as soon as the liquid turns blue the first time, regardless of whether the liquid changes color afterwards. However, for Calcium, when the liquid first turns blue you should wait and/or shake the solution for 10-20 seconds. If it remains blue, you're done. If the liquid turns back to purple, you should continue to titrate until the solution remains blue.
    If you're a chemist and you disagree, please weigh in, as this struck me as a little odd. But that's what the narrator says in the Red Sea TH-cam videos, and what Red Sea replied in comments.
    Finally, one recommendation for an accessory - a magnetic lab stirrer. This negates the need for the nifty titration handle, but it also speeds up the titration process quite a bit. BRS carries the Hanna magnetic stirrer, now!

    ANOTHER TIP: When you get the entire reef foundation kit, never ever lose the measuring spoon for calcium... the refill doesn’t come with it. ☺️

    Is there a call to ensure that when the plunger bottom is at 1ml that the titration solution is at the 0.85ml line like the salifert test kits?

    Thanks for the video. I found it helpful, the pause button is my best friend. My daughter (she's the smart one) and I just tested Alkalinity using both the Foundation Pro Ca/KH/Mg and the Marine Care Multi test Kit. We both came up with exactly 50% more Alkalinity using the Marine Care Kit than the Foundation Pro Kit. Both were low. One says 7 and the other says 3.5 We both did it twice. Almost seems like we've read one of them incorrectly, as in backwards but it's highly unlikely given her aptitude for biological science, which is why I brought her into the picture. Are these kits really that far apart as far as accuracy goes or are we misreading something? Yes, we get the inverse amount used part.

    I have this kit but the alk one confuses me. it says add one drop of the reagent and the 10ml of tank water should turn light blue. mine does not. it takes 5-10 drops to get it to turn to the light blue. am i doing something wrong here??

    Wait. So does the liquid level have to be at 1ml exactly or does the black part have to be there? Because there always seems to be a gap of air between the liquid and the rubber gasket on all three syringes

      BulkReefSupplyCom oh my, so that means all my parameters are even higher then they should be. I had a reading of calcium at 500, alk at 13 and magnesium at 1480. But they are probably even higher then that. How could I lower them? I’m using RODI water with the coral pro salt

    You talked about two different ALK tests and colors. The first you discussed that the Alk turns from Green to Yellow and the second you talk about How it turns to Blue. I have the second color changing. Is there a new test as you describe in the first method?

    • @karennation3580
      @karennation3580 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it turns from green to blue then if you have gone to far it turns yellow but i guess you have figured that out by now!

  • @mikemcnamee6030

    A couple tips- the syringe graduations wear away very fast. Wrap them in a layer of packing tape to preserve them. To keep track of magnesium reagent a drops i just set a timer to 1:40 each drop takes ~5 seconds+ 15 seconds of swirling. 0:20x5=1:40.
    Anyone else have particles floating around in their magnesium and calcium titrants?

  • @scotty2salty327
    @scotty2salty327 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    🤔 Hey do you ever notice that when the Magnesium test changes color to blue after about 20 seconds of stirring it will turn pink again. It turned blue at 65 drops (1320 ppm) which is where I expected roughly then turned red. This time I kept adding titrant to see if I could get it to stay blue but I got another 15 drops before I stopped. Do I just take the measure when it turns blue or do I keep going untill it stays blue. That would put me at like 1500 which I know is not true. LFS doesn't test me that high.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Red Sea's how-to videos, the first time you see the color change to that blue color, that's when you take your test result. If you were to keep going until it stays blue, that test result would be inaccurate.

    Am i the only one who is confused about the fact that when he draws liquid into the syringe there is a air pocket by the plunger? Does that not mean that he technically doesn't draw a full 1ml? Does that not throw off ur reading? And can you put the reagent left over back in the bottle to use next time or is the reagent contaminated now?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air in the syringe accounts for the space in the tip of the syringe. It is still a full 1ml of actual liquid. The instruction manual has a good visual representation of this too if you're still confused. Red Sea also recommends discarding any extra reagent so that you don't contaminate the reagent bottle.

      That is indeed the way RedSea says to do it but that is also a terrible way to do it in my opinion. I had noticed inconsistencies in the size of the air bubble which means inconsistencies in results so I ditched that nonsense. A far better way to do it accurately is to remove the plastic tip and draw out 10ml with no air gap... the way syringes are designed to be used. Replace the plastic tip and start testing. This way you know every time, without ambiguity, how much solution is in the syringe.
      Now, I will grant you this is not rocket surgery and sometimes close enough is super good enough but why not take the time to really do it right.
