  • This 6 bar mechanism enables the hinge to rotate 180 degrees.
It contains 5 movable links, 5 revolution joints and 2 prismatic joints.
The two yellow bodies of the hinge are placed in the holes of the panels and are fixed with screws.
At close position the hinge is not seen from outside.
    This hinge is commercially available.
A video shows trajectories of various points of this concealed hinge.

The “Invisibe Hinge” patented by Harold F. Schmidt in 1975. US patent 3881221. Harold was an employee of the company founded by Joseph Soss.

Honestly.. after watching MANY of your videos, I'd really like to see some of these mechanisms in real life
Like a machinist making a few of them and demonstrating them

This is already a mass-manufactured product. It's got a few names but if you search "concealed barrel hinge" you'll find they're cheap and plentiful.

Wow, what a brilliant design. I love its symmetry, and its "simplicity"..

what path does this trace? does it follow a perfectly circular path around a fixed (virtual) pivot point? i think it doesn't, but can't quite tell from the animation (or from playing with a real life Soss-style hinge)

Amazing mechanism. What relation has one arms with the other to design different dimension of mechanism?(proportions). thanks to share your knowledge

Sorry, I don't have calculation instructions for you.
The hinge is designed based on patent figures with some "try and adjust" corrections.

"concealed" but not "invisible". The reason it's called a concealed hinge is the mechanism by which it functions is mostly hidden. If a person sees this type of hinge on cabinetry and aren't previously familiar with it, the workings of it are a mystery.
