  • It is Kayak Camping time! Austin Wallis of Sidetrail Adventures, Kevin Champ of Wondering Electrician, Dirt Dobber, RKB and I jumped into the truck and trekked to The Missouri Ozarks to join The AVA Journeys crew - Brian, and Brenda Dillard, John and Ashley for a trip down the Current River. We Started at Cedar Grove with a take out at Van Buren, MO. Join us for a 5 day float down the emerald green water of the Current River. We explore the rocky bluffs, the gravel bars, the caves, the many springs and more. We had encounters with bears, wild horses, minks, eagles, spiders, bats, and the legendary MOMO! We also got an unexpected surprise from Mother Nature! The Ozark National Scenic Riverways are an amazing treasure. It is no surprise this is such a cherished kayak camping destination. It has everything!

    Had some crazy overnight/next morning flash flood situations myself on the Courtios and Meramac in the past, worst being back in 1995. Not even sure why we still made a run that morning. Lost canoes under downed trees, rocks, etc…one of the bad flood years in Missouri. Those Ozark hills rivers can shoot up fast after some rain for sure, but glad you got out on the Current for a couple days anyhow. Definitely a beautiful river and region to experience!

    Great set of camping videos. I love your combination of narration, background music, action, as well as scenery shots in your editing. I appreciate you pointing out the necessity to always remain aware of your surroundings on and off the water. In addition, your decision to hike to safety and forgo the rest of the trip depicts the necessity to adapt to the situations. Keep up the great videos. My wife and I love your flat water and camping videos most.

    I've been on the Current river with 2 days of on/off downpours, and it didn't rise nearly that much, only like a foot or two. Still looks like you guys had an awesome adventure. I would definitely recommend the Eleven Point River, it is little slower in spots than the Current, but it does have one notable rapid that usually has a standing wave.

      @@RiverKingsKayak I recommend Greer to Riverton on the Eleven Point in MO. It's similar to the Current but the river is much wider. • @Chompchompyerded

    I'm lookin' at that, and knowing that river as I do, I'm like, "Really? You want to camp there? I don't think that's the best idea, but we'll see how it works out for ya." Don't camp just above the water. Don't camp the first high ground. Camp the second high ground. That's what the American Indians who lived in that area did, and people who want to stay dry through the night do the same thing. Guess I'll start the video up again and see what happens, but I don't have a good feeling about it. If it starts raining hard upstream, you're in for a flash flood. Even if it doesn't start raining hard, that river's coming up, and you might end up getting washed out. Back to the video, and we'll see.

    Great video Pete. And way to go sticking to safety first. I’ve been on a trip with people where half of us chose safety and a few chose to venture out (against my advice) on a swollen creek that turned into a flashed river. They ended up having to be rescued by the Fire Department with a swift boat and making the local news where we were. Putting not only their lives at risk but the Fire Dept too. So once again, good choice brother 👍🏻

    When you weigh the pros and cons of hammock camping vs.tent camping I know that a lot of backpackers like hammock camping because of tent pole and sleeping pad weight. I guess heat cold be an issue too when winter camping so you would have added sleeping bag weight. But with kayaking the extra weight is negligible so when you figure in the pros of being able to pitch a tent anywhere, better wind and rain protection, more privacy, and not having spiders, snakes, and Bears on you in your sleep! I think I'll go with a tent. Lol. Not to mention I love taking a nap in a hammock bit if I slept all night in one I doubt I would be able to walk the next day, let alone sit in a kayak for hours. Lol. So this is half a question and half me trying unsuccessfully to be a comedian but is there really an advantage I'm not considering. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I try to use your experiences when I'm planning mine. You also have a good sense of humor so they are not only informative but entertaining and so I really appreciate it. Heres to many safe adventures in the future. Thanks again.

    My husband and I recently discovered your channel and it has became out evening "show" that we watch together. The areas you are in are unlike any we have been kayaking in and they are just breathtakingly beautiful. Your videos are expertly done and we love the balance of nature, music and of course your soothing voice. Bravo! We love River Kings! Question? You're the only channel I've ever watched without commercials? How do you do it? Not complaining of course just wondering ❤️

I figured nobody else wants to see it either. I do have them pre-roll and post-roll, but I won't stand to have them mess up the flow of the video!!!! Thanks for noticing!!

    You can float the Current River in July and August when all the other rivers are too low. You will enjoy the cool spring-fed water when the temps are in the 90s. Rainfall-runoff is captured by the watershed's sinkholes and losing streams that feed the springs. So instead of causing sediment-laden floods, the captured runoff recharges the spring systems to provide the river with clear cool water that flows steadily through stable streambanks of extraordinarily lush and diverse vegetation. So come back to the Current River in the middle of summer when you dream of paddling through a paradise of beautiful spring-fed swimming holes.

    Reminiscing about your grandfather brought tears to my eyes. My mother's dad, "Big Will", as he was often called, was a Merchant Marine in WWII. He didn't speak much of the war, but since he lived on the shores of Lake Erie, he had lots of fish tales to tell. Many a days were also spent paddling our canoe down the Allegheny River in Warren, PA at their hunting camp. He loved to sing and had a beautiful baritone voice; I can still hear him. The Current sure was spun up....glad y'all played it safe! Live to tell stories and go back and revisit when Mother Nature is more cooperating. Cheers!

    I was born, raised, and love near Branson, MO. Welcome to the Ozarks! We contend with those storms every year and invariably someone does something irresponsible and gets themselves in a bad situation. You showed wisdom and good judgment in keeping your whole party safe and soind. Bravo! The Ozarks are truly beautiful but can turn on a dime. I've lived on a couple of streams here all my life and have left and come back 5 times. I really enjoyed this video. Well shot and world class narration. The call to escape was a real expert decision! A rising river happened to me in Korea. I was in Civil Affairs and we traveled a lot. We visited a school district out in the foothills up a valley crossing a ‘stream’ to get there, then visited a porcelain factory & village after crossing a smaller creek. It was raining lightly and the creek was 4-6” deep with guide rocks for the 60 yard crossing. Upstream a thunderstorm dumped and the creek filled to 20” fast, so crossing back the guide rocks were gone and there was 6” of water inside the floor pan at the creek crossing. The jeep dropped into a hole and stalled, so the Lieutenant had to wade to find the track. The steam ahead turned into ragging river and our Korean administrator (ex Infantry Major) knew an old tank trail across the mountains and we backtracked to it, then escaped over mountains on the trail barely able to keep the tires on the edge of the steep track. Go Army! This was 1969 during the time the USN Pueblo was captured by the N Koreans. 🪖🎖

    You are in my backyard here. I float this river. Just bought a prijon like yours and trying to decide if I need a rudder. How much did you feel the rudder benefited you on the Current River?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      right on Wes! I would heavily recommend the rudder with the Yukon. It tracks about as straight as the flight of a butterfly without it. That is what gives it its ability in whitewater though. With the rudder, you will be straight as an arrow. I used the rudder on the Current nearly the entire time.
