Everyone learns differently. If you don't like a method then dont use it. Learn the way that is the most fun for you. Having fun is very important here. Because as any hobby having motivation may be a challange.

Thank you, I feel that your advice is not only useful for learning Japanese, but also for other languages. I really like what you say about practicing without pressure. Sometimes I find myself reflecting on when I will start to speak and understand everything, but I have realized that it is better for me to study without pressuring myself, as I become more aware and ultimately learn more, and I feel better, avoiding falling into the trap of all or nothing thinking. I maintain my practices consistently, even if I have a bad day and only study for a short time. I will take into account the other things.
To be honest I’ve been in the side of trying to learn in a hurry with a lot of pressure due certain life events, and although I manage to achieve my objective it never feels right and I always ended up dealing with some type of burnout. So this time with Japanese I will try to enjoy as much the journey and just keep going even if I only have time for small steps :)
I'm almost a year into my journey, and I'll have to echo the sentiment of easing yourself into the groove of things with a low new words per day count. You absolutely do not want to overwhelm yourself early on, that's how you end up thinking of it as a chore and eventually quitting. Slowly increase the new words count as you start to feel comfortable with Anki, you really shouldn't think of it as a race.
The part about rewatching things you already loved in a different language with Japanese audio and subs is also great advice if you ask me, that's exactly what i did starting out. I can't emphasize enough how much less stressful it is compared to watching something new to you, you don't need to understand every single conversation because you already have a gist of the events taking place and won't feel lost watching it. It served as training wheels for me and now I'm more than comfortable picking up anime I know nothing about, so long as it's not THAT difficult. Do expect an episode to take up to an hour if you're looking up every unknown word for 100% comprehension though, it's usually a 40-45 minutes deal for me.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries in English) airing this season is the only one I've given up on so far, in large part thanks to borrowed Chinese vocabulary.
Anyhow I've ranted long enough, if you've read this far feel free to ask anything you might have in mind.

There's people who are born with a very special kind of brain. People who can look at the world with a problem solving type of gaze and they see everything as a puzzle that can be easily analyzed and solved. I see this in people like Mr. beast, the dude from Diary of a CEO and Chris Williamson. I think you are exactly like them. I'm amazed at how you tackle huge challenges that most people write off as just dreams and you simply break them into steps and obliterate them. I've seen you do this before and I'm sure you'll not only learn Japanese and become fluent but also probably Korean right after XD it makes sense. I am very lucky to have met you and I'm sure this channel will blow up eventually.

Great video! I've been learning Japanese for a year and a half, and I have also used Busuu. I think it's really useful. The bite sized lessons and all the repetition drill in the grammar points. For kanji it's a bit weak, but for that I have a lifetime subscription to Wanikani. I thought about RTK, but learning meanings without the readings seems futile to me. I am on level 22, taking it slow, enjoying the ride.
I am also slogging through Genki II. Right now I'm on chapter 19; only 4 more to go. As textbooks go it's good, but it's a chore. I can't wait to finish it and move onto "real" Japanese content.

bruh my brain somehow automatically remembers kanji pretty much after 4-5 repetitve learnings and I don't need any RTK or such stuff, seems like my life is on easy mode ;)

It’s worth pointing out that choosing the wrong tool is very subjective….and also if a tool ends up “not working”, it doesn’t mean it was a waste of time….you will always learn something from each tools…even if you feel it’s not working.
Also, while writing may not be a “necessary thing”, I personally think it works better than mnemonics. Of course, YMMV, but for me, just writing kanji thousands of times is what got me to learn them…now most of the common ones just come naturally while reading…of course, I can no longer write it since I stopped practicing it…but I don’t regret my approach
I used to stress anki a lot…..50 new words daily, 500 word review daily,….it does work….but if I get a do over I would not have stressed it so much..input is what matters. Anki is just an optional tool. It helps, but it is not a requirement. If you are using anki, I do recommend against using a prebuilt deck…even if you know no words….Just start reading something and add your own words to anki (this is what I did from the very beginning and it worked wonders)
I recommend input first, then output…this is because you can’t really output if you are not familiar with the language…and you get familiarity with input…..I started with video games….then moved over to visual novels and anime..then JDramas and light novels…now I just do whatever I want with japanese
Also, I was never the type of person to “watch something I already have watched for the sake of learning”…all content I consumed (reading or listening) was 100% new….what really helped me was anki with that….I also only ever consumed content I liked….I tried graded reading as suggested in this video and ironically the first book I tried was Japanese Short Stories for Beginners….honestly it bored me because it wasn’t content I picked myself….ever from that moment I picked my own content every time…..its more challenging, but definitely rewarding
Hey! Thanks for that. You mentioned that if you were to do things over again, you wouldn't stress anki so much and focus more on input. What would you do as an alternative to anki or a graded/comprehensible input-type approach?
@@maefouad That all depends on the individual. I personally tried various graded reading material. I tried LingQ, Satori Reader, various types of graded reading books…I could not finish any of them…I felt I was forcing myself to even look at them. The input approach I followed I wouldn’t change even if starting over. And I would still do anki, just not nearly as much. Although I still consider it not required, I would prefer to do it. If you don’t want to do it at all, just read content you enjoy and forget about it…but try to stick to content by the same author or that talks about the same kinds of things (same genre, same kind of story, etc). This way you learn through natural repetition.
Not sure if I mentioned it in the original post but I used to do ~500 daily reviews and add 50+ new cards daily. So instead I would just do no more than 50-75 review and maybe like 5-10 new words based on frequency…these new words would just be words I come across, not from any pre-made deck. Once I reach 10 new words I would just do a hard stop on anki….but keep reading/listening in that same day simply because being familiar with the language is what really matters.
As far as content I recommend, like I said, that depends on the individual. I only found myself pushing through and finishing content I actually enjoyed…This ranged from games, anime, manga, JDrama, Light Novels and Visual Novels…I picked my own path forward in terms of content…I started with text heavy games…played 3 games of increasing difficulty

None of which I had played before. Then I moved to 2.5 visual novels (I only read 2 completely and dropped the third one). Don’t remember their names as I wasn’t too into visual novels….I was just trying out the genre. Then I read 3 light novels in the following order

ゴブンスレイ (goblin slayer)
Once I reached visual novels, I just started to pick whatever caught my eye. Everything I read was new to me. I started listening to whatever I wanted (primarily anime and JDramas) when I started Light novels. Before that point, I was only reading. Then after these 3 light novels, I just started reading whatever I wanted to read. Of course, you would need a ton of patience if you are still studying kanji and grammar to ensure you understand. Just be sure to pace yourself accordingly….I started reading manga and just playing whatever game I wanted after I finish the third light novel. my first three games were Ghost Wire Tokyo, Halo Infinite Campaign and Tales of Arise (this was a really hard game to get through at my level at this time.
All this to just say, my recommendation is to simply read and listen to whatever you want to..whatever calls your attention, regardless of difficulty…..at least from my experience, reading or listening to something you are not interested in will never end well. Of course, if you end up picking something too hard for your level you will need a great deal of patience to get through it…..I should know as pretty much everything I picked was always miles above my level…but I still enjoyed it :)
I will recommend language reactor for netflix so you can start watching content through there….I would also recommend disabling dual subs as Japanese and English are way too different…and if you are a beginner in Japanese, I would recommend you have Auto Pause turned on so you can dissect every sentence and look at the english translation if you really need to.
I realized you asked for content I would recommend and instead I just told you what I did, but the answer to your question is not that easy as I’m personally against graded reading/listening type of content because of what I already mentioned…Also, keep in mind you don’t have to understand 100% of everything you read and listen to call that comprehensible input…I learned that a bit too late in the process….Good luck :)

Immersion should come first and foremost in the language learning.
For example I have been studying Swedish by translating song lyrics
Song lyrics are usually very easy to understand and translate and also easy to find on the internet. I listen to the song while reading the lyrics. I learn pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, all at the same time. It is fun, easy, addictive and extremely efficient. I use Google Translate and online dictionaries. I haven't bought any books and don't attend schools.
I only study one hour every day. I never study more than an hour because I have other things to do and Swedish for me is just a hobby.
But I never get bored, one hour of study flies by in an instant, I always want to study more.
I have been studying every single day for 3 years now.
I can translate more than 8 songs in an hour.
I never use any apps like Anki or Duolingo.
Out of curiosity, how advanced would you say you are in Swedish after doing this?

My goal is to really be fluent like a native speaker, and be able to understand any kind of media like books, music, TV, etc.
So I am not there yet.
But I have already started reading other things besides song lyrics, like internet articles, including wikipedia articles.
There are many TH-cam videos promising fluency in 6 months or less, but these videos are talking about "baby language", a very simple language, with very simple grammar and simple vocabulary, that allows you to have a simple conversation with native speakers.
I believe I already can do that, but that is not my goal.
@@hcm9999 Yeah, I was interested if you could understand some basic media at least. I just started learning Japanese and while fluency is not really a target (at least not in the foreseeable future), I'd like to be able to understand some songs, read mangas and books that are not overly complex.

Very load heavy. italki is probably the best, the rest are not as efficient, except the listening part.. But again, if it works, that's good i suppose. This seems to b0 the schedule of e someone trying to ace the proficiency exams . Japanese doesnt really have that many phonemes, and the grammar is borderline non-existent so it's a relatively easy language to learn by ear.
