Stop Motion Tutorial: Green Screen FX

    Here are some ideas on how to make use of a green screen (or in this case a green or blue poster board) to put your stop motion and clay animation characters into sets and locations that just don't quite fit onto your animation stage.
    This is NOT a software demo. I use After Effects, but I know many animators can afford that, and with so many options, I didn't attempt to get into all the steps for compositing green screen shots. So if it seems like I skim over the post production stage, that's why.
    Vamirina Disneyland clip: IMToys at www.youtube.co....
    Please see my other tutorials on how to animate toys, make an armature for a puppet, as well as other stop motion subjects.
    Software: Dragonframe. iStopmotion (Mac only) is a good frame-capturing app for the price. I understand MonkeyJam is a good free option for Windows (well, some users feel otherwise). If you have a favorite stop motion app, please tell us about it in the comments.
    Effects compositing in After Effects and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. I have not had the opportunity to try out free or inexpensive alternatives for Windows.
    Camera: I'm using a DSLR. But if you're not there yet, a good option is a phone or tablet with a quality camera and an app that can shoot single frame for 24-frames-per-second playback.
    Shopping:
    Green or blue poster board: Arts/craft store, Target, or $1 Store
    Clay (Van Aken, Sculpy III), armature wire: Arts/craft store like Hobby Lobby or amazon.com.
    Armature kit: stopmotionstore.com
    16-gauge aluminum armature wire (from an art store or Amazon, not the hardware store)
    Just about everything here can be found on Amazon if you don't have all these kinds of stores in your area. You can also get animation supplies from stopmotionstore.com.

      @@BatziBoah Someone once said it takes 10 years to master something. I couldn't agree more. It's also advised for new authors to write their first book, and throw it in the bin. It takes a lot of work to make something look this easy, and if it looks terrible just work harder and you'll get there :)

    Great video! Quick question though...the newest version of Final Cut for my Macbook is FCPX, and I'm wondering if it still has the green screen capability. (since I've never seen it on there) You can probably tell by my profile that I make AGSMs, and I'm planning on getting a green screen soon so I can make some huge projects I've come up with. I animate in the Stop Motion Studio Pro app on iPad, and then edit what I can't do in SMS to the footage in Final Cut. I'm just wondering where to get to the green screen settings in FC or if I'm going to need a whole other software. Thanks!

    What do I do if the thing is animating has both green and blue on it?

    • @MichaelParks
      @MichaelParks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's basically just something you have to avoid. If it has just a little, like blue eyes on a blue screen, I've fixed it in After Effects, by creating a duplicate layer with just eyes (everything else masked out) without the blue screen filter applied. But that can get to be a lot of work.

    bro, can u explain how to do a large scale figure green screen, like a highway car chase?

    • @MichaelParks
      @MichaelParks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you mean larger props and sets, it just means a larger greenscreen. I bought real greenscreen material that can cover a wall, and have even painted a wall (for freelance live action as well as stop motion). The trick with more complex setups is to make sure that the greenscreen is lit evenly and isn't getting shadows. The greenscreen gets its own lights, and you try to light the set without spilling additional light onto the screen.

    How do u get the green object in the green screen still that's been really annoying

    • @MichaelParks
      @MichaelParks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but if you are asking what to do when you put a green object in front of a green screen, that's when you switch it to a blue screen.

    Any chance you could shed light on sound design in your animations?

    • @MichaelParks
      @MichaelParks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's not really much to shine a light on. I edit in Premiere Pro, using royalty free music. Sound effects come from my old CD collection, sound effects sites, and youTube. Using such varied sources, I can't say I put a lot of thought into a consistent "design" for a video beyond the decision of just how cartoony the effects will be.
