- A little tag I've put together for some friends who want to start a recreation barbershop quartet. Everybody likes Eb.
If you like my work, please head on over to my soundcloud where you can here a more diverse body of my compositions and arrangements!

Well… The day before this was written, I met someone, who went out of their way to give me some very kind and loving words. But it wasn't simply her words or the gift they came to me in that struck me, it was the look in her eye. There, I saw something that I… that I connected with deeply: a hunger to give love. She awoke something in me that I thought I'd lost. That, sir, was hope.
I had a hard time with whether or not I would answer this, but I think her gift demands it. Thanks, Scott. :)
This tag carries more weight in one minute than some artists have in their entire discography, and my goodness the context provides so much more depth to your wonderful harmonies. I hope you've found a person or place to love and be loved and you're still making amazing music!
ik it's been 10 years but could you post each part seperatelty? This would really help me
@@PixelPioneerScratchthere are versions with the music on yt
This is SO good. The dissonances are bitterly beautiful. That #4 chord at 0:28 - Incredible. Very Whitacre. Thank you for bringing some beauty to my day. I hope to hear a lot more of your stuff in the future.
MusicGuru12 I read this just as it passed by!
For me, it was the three chords after 0:40.
Watching this 8 years later, this is AMAZING!
9 years, still goin!
@@gabereitemeier4309 10 years, once it hits 11 someone keep the chain going
11 years!
Great tag :)
How can i like this multiple times, you are so awesome Stephan
I gotta make some space to return to quartet music in the near future. Once this semester is over I will likely have some space to do so.
Got a vocal trio + piano and guitar thing you might dig in the works tho. Probably won’t be able to give it serious attention till after semester also.
Wow. Thanks so much. No, there isn't as of yet. But as you (and so many others) have asked about it, I will actually begin working on that very thing in the next few weeks.
I will be sure to notify all of you when its done, and tell you where you can find it! ;)
Thanks so much for your kind words.
Great things going on here! I must have hit repeat 10 times!
Barbershoptags (DOT) com has a listing for this tag. There you will find a transcription from John Saylor (I've just rechecked it to be sure everything is correct). His transcription is note for note with what I wrote (though you may think otherwise at first glance when you see B Naturals instead of C flats [referring to the flat 6]). I will create a listing for Once Again, if you've interest in it.
Thanks for your interest in my music!
Oh YES this is tremendous, man. It's amazing seeing such a development in technique, writing, recording, singing, it's all there (and I'm truly wowed). Thanks, Stephan.
Stephan, thank you very much for replying back and answering my question. The transcription threw me off for a bit with the B natural when really it's Cb. Truly an amazing piece! I can' t wait to hear more of your compositions. Thanks again!
This gave me chills.
so much music in this, bravo
thanks very much for all your help. I love your work :)
That would be great. I was missing the tenor move on "dream" because the tie wasn't there and I was looking the bari part for some reason. Awesome.
Beautiful tag!
Genius!
Wow! This really awesome! I have listen to this tag over 10 times already. I liked it so much that I did chord analysis on it. Just a quick check, what is the 2nd to last chord of the tag? I got an interesting secondary dominant chord: IV 11 First Inversion / vi. I also notice that it was the same chord for "Rest" and "Break".
Stephen this arrangement is absolutely stunning. I was wondering if I would be able to maybe buy the arrangement from you to bring to a contest we are competing at in February.
Hi Hayden. :) I wish I could message you more privately about this, but for whatever reason youtube won't let me do that. But, I suppose it's a question many have asked and I've never answered.
A couple years after writing this tag, I did create a complete work for it. However, I've never released it-- for personal reasons. The event it refers to is a deeply meaningful turning point in my life, and it has taken me years to understand what it was I was grappling with and what it was I encountered.
To clarify, this thing started off for me as a love song, but has become something much more important-- a reaching for hope.
It's been long enough now, and I think I will soon make public the full work. But as of the moment, I don't have anything I can give you. Be patient and keep your eyes open. :)
Stephan, hope school is winding down for you. Wanted to know if there's a song to go with this tag? Or is it just as it is on its own? Please let me know, as I"m interested in singing it. At any rate, beautiful work.
Stephan, don't worry about this question until after school is out, but is there a song to go with this tag? Or is it just as it is on its own? At any rate, beautiful work.
@SJCarlsonMusic I just wanted to ask, I know you've got a ridiculous top range (I saw the It Is Well With My Soul tag you did with Rhett Roberts) but I'm curious, can you naturally hit that low Eb at the end of this tag? If so, you're my idol man.
It's on the website barbershop tags.com :)
Still good
I need the music for this :)
wow. How do I go about getting the sheet music for this?
Any chance you can re-voice this for women???
It must be possible!! Please???
Thanks for your comments! Sir, that Eb is not legitimate. My usable range is, approximately, G2 (G at bottom of Bass staff) to A5 (A just above treble staff). As a composer, sometimes I find it helpful to produce sung versions of my compositions to better demonstrate the composition through the human voice, and when it demands it, I will sing as closely as I can manage (while still remaining true to the quality of my voice) and alter it. Those Ab's though, are real! :)
One last thing, haha. I know there has been much debate here on youtube about whether or not such practices are acceptable in the world of vocal music or production, and some claim that it defiles the integrity of accapella music. I am a composer and professional musician, as well as a student. These tags are just good fun to me (though I do my best to share quality work!). If someone thinks I'm "cutting corners" in these videos, then they needn't watch them. Thanks again for your kind words!
I know it's 10 years later, but good music is good music, and this is good music.
Brandon, good to see a theory-oriented guy! I consider that chord a ii65 (tones, according to scale, in order being 4 b6 1 2). This first inversion ii7 chord gives the illusion of a plagal effect, providing the necessary tension/release needed for a cadence (as the dominant to tonic effect is worn out so much in barbershop, considering the plethora of 7 chords). While this isn't BBS per se, I do appreciate the urgency of the plagal effect.
Yes, but "rest" is a broader spatial structure!
What a Beautiful resolve. Goosebump time.
Discovered this video years and years ago and I still come back to it on the regular. Thanks Mr Carlson!
wow sooo beautiful, great lead voice!
Hi, just truly getting in to barbershop, is there a full version of the song or is this just a tag? I keep seeing little tags all over the place but I was under the impression that tags are the final part of a piece and I can’t find any of the full pieces to these tags.
this is a beautiful arrangement and performance! you should arrange some full songs.
Also, in those situations I mentioned, I do my best to produce a sound that is still true to the quality of the human voice in general. :) No, I'm not a mutant with that kind of range, and I will never be so arrogant as to claim I am.
SJ, I just discovered your channel. Love your stuff... very expressive. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah it'a atill incredible!! Would you be up fo sharing your music?! I would love to try and do this with my guys?!
You're very welcome for - in fact, entitled to - the praise.
Looking forward to it!
Stephen,
Could you tell us the story behind the lyrics to this tag?
Is the sheet music for this available anywhere?
You must do both. I am only 22, friend, so don't be discouraged. I also found myself in a similar position, but I worked through it and both are very reliable to me now. The key is finding the balance between the two, and helping the two to marry and become one.
what an amazing singing voice :O
i also like how everything other than the lead is muffled and makes it sound super chill
Omg its groovydominoes, hello!
I would definitely suggest either using a pop filter or hipass on the mic. Love the arrangement!
Oh god this is sooooo beautiful. Cannot express it in words how deep into my soul that one goes.
So amazing, my heart breaks too
This is so amazing...
Would it be at all possible for me to get the sheet music from you for my a Capella group? Everyone would love it. This is beautiful. I melted hahah
Full version?
I find that singing in my chest voice tends to have negative effects on my falsetto, which I am quite proud of. But I'm losing more and more top notes. I can still sing an A6 just about, but this time a year and a half a go I was still comfortably singing top C's! I'm not sure whether to continue working on my chest voice, or just stick to falsetto. (I'm a 21 year old male)
Exquisite
Where can I get the sheet music (correct to what you are singing) for this tag and also for the "Once Again" tag. Would like to teach this to some of my chorus members.
stunning
awesome tag! i agree with what someone else posted...could use a little more bass. great job though :)
Saw this on the front page after Dan left a comment. Very, very well done. I absolutely love these chords.
holy crap... you just reached that low bass Eb D:
btw what software did you use to do this?
thanks :) how do you sustain those top A flats like that?! And also sing that low Eb?!
Wow. Thank YOU, Josh.
The secret to epic multi-tracks: Turtle Beach Headsets. You go Glen Coco.
Wow! That was awesome! Can't wait to hear the next one!
man i'd love to hear a full arrangement of this.
Thanks for sharing your talent. Awesome.
Dude this is amazing! So so good.
me too. I'm glad i watched this.
OVERTONESSSS
Frickin' GORGEOUS!
SJCarlsonMusic I just wanted to ask, I know you've got a ridiculous top range (I saw the It Is Well With My Soul tag you did with Rhett Roberts) but I'm curious, can you naturally hit that low Eb at the end of this tag? If so, you're my idol man.
I'm sorry my friend, but those bass notes are definitely fake. lol. I have, pretty consistently, a low A and thats about it. I do my best to get as close as humanly possible and adjust the remaining space, to preserve the humanity of the sound as much as possible.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
SJCarlsonMusic Thats funny I do the same thing, faking low notes :D only my technical abilities are very scarce and you have air like FOREVER thats unbelievable! I love your music so much, when I am not able to sleep, I listen to "sleep my love" O:) Pretty self-centered but...so what :D Thank you for the inspiraton and peace.
By the way, this tag is stunning.
Love it!
i know its 11 year late...but can we get some sheet music for this beauty
Late last year, I completed a commission for an expansion of this tag into a full piece of music! However you’ll have to wait to get your hands on it, as the quartet requested an exclusivity hold on it until they can perform it. so… hang in there!
@@SJCarlsonMusic ok awesome
@@SJCarlsonMusic do u know when they are going to preform
@@spanishjaco8493 From what I understand of our last communication, it may very well be toward the latter half of this year at the earliest. So you may be waiting a while. However I have a couple other things I hope to make available a bit sooner than that, so keep your eyes open for a couple new things in the front half of the year!
@@SJCarlsonMusic awesome i’ll be keeping a look out
i adore your cover of this tag so much, the pure emotion in your voice is so beautiful!
Thanks Sophie! I’m actually the one who wrote it, believe it or not. Sitting in my kitchen junior year. It’s got a special place in my memory.
@@SJCarlsonMusic I came back to say that I just realised that hahah! I'm amazed!! It's such a beautiful beautiful tag :)
