At 29 min you did a detection roll with the enemy sub, applying a -3 modifier for being range 5 on the other side of the Thermal Layer, and I believe you missed the -2 for your sub NM, and another for the slow area. I’m thinking the die roll should be -6.
I will have to check... it is hard to keep track of everything while filming and narrating. If i did, then it was an error and I shouldn't have fired the torpedoes.
@@GrumpyOldMan63 Yes at 50:31 you shoot two guided torpedoes at range 3, and I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't by Cameron message. May be because the sectors look like they are smaller on the flank?. In any case with all the possible mistakes you could have made, I am finding these videos very useful. First in order to have a general overview of the gameplay and second to keep an eye on possible errors I can do myself. I am waiting for the carrier expansion gameplay too!

Dean, I am still a little confused about how the helicopters work in the sub expansion. You showed how they launch by rolling a die. I also understand that if they detect, they then attack. What happens after that confuses me. Do they continue to attempt to detect and attack turn after turn? If their ship is sunk, do they leave the board? Or do they only get one attack after detection and then leave the board? Thanks. Tom
Tom, if launched, the enemy helicopters only attempt to detect once that battle turn. If a helicopter detects the SSN, then it only attacks once that battle turn. It returns to the launching ship after the detection/attack attempts.
Hi Dean, thanks for these videos. After seeing the video I have some questions you may answer: -Does command and control apply in the case where the Udaloy detected you on the first turn? Could the other Udaloy and the Slava have rolled for it? -Do the helicopters have any range limitation? can they attack you from a ship at range 5 or 6? -The sub sensor performance card is only used when trying to detect enemy subs or the enemy sub is trying to detect you. It is not used when you are trying to detect an enemy surface ship even if you are under the layer. Am I right? Thanks in advance.
So great question about command and control. Yes, I should have done a command and control check if one ship had detected my sub. The helicopters don't have a range limit. Don't use range numbers for ship detections.
The ordnance the helicopter would use for an attack has a range limit. So if you are firing a missile from a helicopter to a ship, count the number of range/azimuth cells between them and make sure you aren't over the missile attack range. Only subs in the same cell as the helicopter dropping torpedoes can be attacked. So the attack range with torpedoes is 0.
Since you had 80so points to begin, could you have spent four each to promote your sub and commander to skilled instead of average? (Just like the base game)
@@alphanerdgames9417 Yes, the patrol campaign is just one sub and commander going out on multiple patrols. The normal Sub campaigns allow you to choose which sub and commander to take. Having two subs and commanders is advantageous because stress will accumulate if the same sub is going out every time.

Great job! I have such fond memories of Microprose! What great games on our old C64s.

At +50mins you fired two torpedoes at the enemy sub in range band 3. Was the range of those torps 2?

@@CameronBlackwood No problem... the whole point of the video is to be instructional, so asking questions where I may have made a mistake is fine.

Great question. I did actually have some SO points left over, and I could have spent them on increasing the skill level.
Thanks
With the Ucranian war this video turned very interesting..
On other campaigns there are 4 starting skill sets. Is it expected that you take 2 subs?
You can only take 1 sub at a time on a mission against a target. But you can have 2 subs and choose which one to take.
@@GrumpyOldMan63 ok this is very different than the patrol campaign.
