I’m only about a month and a half into my pipe smoking career, kind of glad I got to miss the MIA of Muttnchop. Love your videos. They have helped me a lot. Merry Christmas to all!!! May your pipes stay full.
Merry Christmas Billy. I am over 75 years old now. I will not be cellaring any tobacco. I just hope I live long enough to smoke 💨 all the tobacco I have.
This is the channel that single-handedly influenced me to cellar pipe tobacco even before I got into pipe smoking. I now have over 100 different tobaccos that I’ve begun the cellaring process with. As an enjoyer of wine and whiskies I can appreciate the aging process and am excited to do direct comparisons in the future.
Just a thought...Have you ever thought of doing a video on pipes being designated for certain types of tobacco? As a new pipe smoker I hear a awful lot about ghosting which makes me think I should maybe designate certain pipes for certain types of tobacco to not have to worry about that. You could also talk about what type of pipe would be best to designate for those types of blends. I haven't really found anyone online that really covers this, let alone the way you probably could. Maybe this way a new pipe smoker would know the best way to start their collection of pipes and not have to worry about having potential bad experiences due to trying so many types of blends with one or two pipes and not even the right pipe for the job!
I started pipe smoking late in life. Two yrs ago at the age of 60. I cellar for another reason on top of improving the tobacco. I’m trying to build a cellar before I retire next year. Tobacco will only increase in price in the coming years. So I’m also doing it from an economic side. I’m off the a pretty good start. I have added 240 tins to my cellar this past year. Trying to have 400+ when I retire. Thank You Chris for another great video.
A wise decision; many countries are levying excessive taxes on tobacco as it is, and New Zealand in particular is attempting to ban it entirely via a perpetually increasing minimum age such that nobody born after a certain year can legally buy it.
Hi sir, greeting from Indonesia. I'm a re-establish smoker. I smoke in my younger years but then i quit because of work, lifestyle n family. Now i almost retired and have new setup in my daily life. Then I choose to smoke pipe instead of cigarette because it's more elegant and relaxing. I only smoke when i want to relax not in daily activity. For few months now, I been watching your videos and enjoy every pipe smoking knowledge from you. I hope your health well and if someday you went to Indonesia please try our tobacco. Cheers.
Started my pipe journey towards the end of last year, got me a 6$ cherry wood pipe and a bag of cheap cherry Cavendish. Went the aromatic route due to my early years going to grandads house and getting that cherry aroma! But I discovered your channel and I have learned so much more about all the small details and nuances. Thank you so much for doing what you do, just got my 1st Peterson and it is a world of difference! Look forward to your videos and continued success! Happy piping from your friend here in Texas!
I love how down to earth Muttnchop Piper, for example he is telling us if we want to try it, we should keep the Tobacco for 7-10 years. He said it as easy as it is 7-10 hrs. This was so funny 😂and he remind me of my grandfather. I love him and wish him all the best!. Also when he drank the juice, he is natural and has a BIG HEART ❤️ . I love everything here 👍👍👍
First of all, thank you for your service. Just ran across you on youtube a while back, I've been smoking a pipe for some 50 years now and enjoy it to this day. I'm 70 now and I still enjoy smoking a pipe. I was in the Navy by the way. A pipe has always been relaxing to me and it still is today. Love watching you on youtube, keep it up. The very best to you and your wife and kids>
Thank you my friend, and thank you for your service as well. You probably saw more action then I did. I wouldn't trade anything for the time I spent in the corps.
Very good presentation. I could tell by the duration of the time you spent on the cellared tobacco that it was definitely much better. Your videos are the reason I had the confidence to start on this journey. I enjoy your content and I'm glad to see you're having some current stuff. To you and all of yours a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And to all the TH-cam pipe-smoking Community as well.
Muttonchop!! I love you man. I've been looking forward to this next video. I'm smoking right now while watching a blend of all different types of tobaccos. It's my "best of the rest" blend, i guess you could say. I've literally just combined every type of unsmoked tobacco you can imagine into a large container that has been sitting on my shelf for years now. It's to the point where I can't even describe the smell or taste because there's so many different things going on in it. I will say it's good though. Instead of throwing away tobaccos you don't care for or that get old and dry, try putting them all in the same container. They will rehydrate as long as you also put some blends in there that are still moist.
I started aging tobacco when I first started smoking a pipe back in 2010. Luckily I have many tins that have aged so I don't have to smoke fresh unless I want to. I was smoking a 2104 Christmas Cheer while watching your video and it is just awesome. Very mellow with no longue bite. Always like watching your videos; keep up the good work!
I appreciate all you do Mutton chop piper. I live in Louisiana and drove to go see a friend by Harrisburg Pennsylvania. I stopped by Boswells in chambersburg Pa. i wanted to say thanks for the recommendation. I bought a very nice boswell pipe and some of their tobacco. Pipe smokes great and they have good tobacco thank you and merry Christmas
Watching you thoughtfully smoke and describe what is going on with your taste buds is one of the most satisfying experiences of this week! I'll definitely keep cellaring my favorite blends. Does the difference in flavor due to cellaring vary depending on the type of blend or does it just blend and mellow the flavors in general regardless of the blend?
The gandalf of the YTPC, sage advice as always, for those just discovered this channel listen well and absorb👍. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Funny how even one of the sharpest, most peppery blends can totally mellow out and become smooth, almost creamy. Even after a considerably short cellar of 1 year can totally change a blend. I followed your advice of prior videos and set aside blends I didn't like for exactly one year, and totally changed them (also considering a change of my palet). Thanks for the great content and advice.
I completely follow you on the way of cellared to new tabacco. But one comment you should have cleansed your pallet with water 😉 the tabacco behave different with what we drink with it. Love your videos and you helped me a lot in my pipe journey, I learned a lot of you.
Phenomenal test! Cellaring is such an awesome piece of pipe smoking. Serves as a way to store tobacco and simultaneously allow it to mellow out/develop better characteristics. Cheers mutton chop! Another great one
Totally worth it. If you're not buying more than you can smoke, you're doing it wrong. Always buy more than I intend to smoke for the sole purpose of cellaring.
Have owned a Nording signature pipe for years, smoking it once or twice a year when I got together with college buddies, but never really enjoying or appreciating it. However, I recently decided to take it a bit more seriously. After employing your smoking techniques, I am here to report that it has improved my smoking enjoyment many times over. Cheers!
Chris you made my day just by uploading this video and showing us the difference of cellaring tobacco, also congrats on the new watch I have a silver one just like it!
Chris, I've always loved your videos. I'm glad you're back now. I have fond memories of learning to smoke my pipe and asking you questions, which you were always gracious enough to answer. And I'm glad to see the merch shop!. That's a great logo, it captures you well. Happy Piping my friend
Just purchased a tin of 4th generation 1931 erick peters blend. The tin was loaded in August of 2018. They cellared it for me! only problem is That I don't know what a fresh tin tastes like. Oh well. Happy piping!!!
I have followed your advice on cellaring and I am better for it. With the few people that still smoke a pipe, I find myself always looking for recommendations and techniques to try. Thank you for being relevant and inspirational. You make my enjoyment more fulfilling. Merry Christmas to you and your family and friends. Bless you my friend.
Thanks for confirming what I hoped would happen with my newly purchased tins. I started collecting a few extra tins each month and really looking forward to them aging nicely. Also hedge against current and future inflation and future taxes I’m sure will get added on. Now I have a legit excuse to build myself an even bigger cellar. Thanks for the advice in all your videos! I’ve been doing this all solo for about 2 years now, and no one else in my extended family smokes a pipe. So have really benefited from your sage advice and continue to enjoy pipe smoking more as time goes on. Merry Christmas!
I have a jar full of a blend called Hearth of Galway which is my pipe groups (Pipe Smokers of Ireland) group blend. I tried it as soon as i got it and it was a decent American/English blend good flavor and smooth kick of Cyprian and regular latakia rounded off with a Tennessee burley and sweetened with some black and regular cavendish. but after cellaring it for a month or two it mellowed out and became so much smoother. It had rounded out the latakia to meld with the burley and the cavendish had mellowed out losing its over sweetness and replacing it with a mild more gentle sweetness. so i agree. Definitely cellar your tobacco. Because as they say good thing come to those who wait.
Really enjoying your channel. I’m 3 weeks into pipe smoking and so enjoy the breath method I’ve learned from you. Love this type of video. Thank you Muttnchop!
Thanks for that info. I watched a couple of other cellaring videos you did as I've just started to realize the value in this procedure.I found out by accident about this although I had heard about cellaring for years in various blogs and other discussions. I received a couple of 1 ounce jars of Brigham's Mark Twain a few years back as a gift and didn't like it - bland and non descript. I threw it in the cupboard thinking I'd eventually toss it. This summer I found it and decided to give it another try and wow was I surprised. In two years and however long it had been since manufacture it had matured to a very nice aromatic. Merry Christmas to you!!
Glad your back missed you while you were gone. Because of you you I have enjoyed my pipe smoking so much more. Thank you for all the great advice and little tricks. You really are a wonderful person! God bless you!
Happy holidays my friend. Wishing you and your family the dearest of holidays. The lesson I have taken away from this video, is that we humans have to make a point of aging like these blends. A sweet end to a wonderful story.
👋 -- New pipe smoker here... my only question is: - Should you cellar ONLY sealed tins / packages of tobacco? What about opening a tin --> moving it to a mason jar? Is this going to net the same results as a tin that's never been cracked?!?
I have a few tins that are set aside from 2018 of various blends. Just waiting on them. Always enjoyable to see your videos. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season.
Thanks for the videos. A couple questions, first how was dryness/ wetness between the two. And second how different was the smoking at the end of bowl, last third portion let's say? Thank you again.
I just cracked a tin of Plum Pudding from 2020 in honor of Joe’s passing. Just in the 2 yrs I can see and taste the difference between a fresh tin and an cellared tin. It definitely improves the flavor. Not that fresh is bad. But I can’t wait til 2029 when I crack open my oldest tin.
I agree, cellaring is definitely worth it. Blends that I don't smoke all that often it's nice to have some cellared when you get the urge to tuck into it.
2 questions Mr. Muttonchop. 1. Define cellaring. Do I need a true cellar? Or can I just shelve them in my home? 2. For opened tins, can I vacuum seal tobacco? In food grade bags? Or jar and lid only?
@@waynerobinson764 Hi Wayne! I've seen where people do use different methods, vacuum seal, etc., but the majority (not all) of success reported seems to be those that 'cellar' by keeping the unopened tin(s), or for tins with the seals broken/opened or bulk tobacco not purchased in a sealed tin, in a mason jar with mason jar lid. 'Cellaring' can be as simple as keeping whatever you wish to age on a shelf, cabinet, or in a box in your closet, where temperature is reasonable and direct light avoided. Basement or root cellar not needed, and possibly not desirable if moisture or temperature is a risk. My apologies if barging in...just thought I might help is Chris (Muttonchop) is otherwise busy. Happy piping, good Sir!
Merry Christmas to you and the family. It's very interesting to see just how much the 'core' flavors/tenets (i.e., the breadiness vs. fruit tastes) changed over time. I'm really looking forward to cracking a tin of my favorites in 5 and 10 years.
Not really. Latakia peaks and then slowly loses its flavor. Like a cigar you need to smoke it at its peak. They definitely mellow out but if you like the Latakia flavor probably 3-5 years is perfect.
Good to see you making videos again. Thanks for all the info you put out there. I'm fairly new to pipe smoking but so far enjoying it very much. I only have 2 pipes for now but love them both. One a church warden a very cool smoking meerschaum from sms pipes. The other also a meerschaum full bent dublin from sms pipes. I've thoroughly enjoyed the blends you have shown from english to aromatics. You do an excellent job describing them taste smell ect. I'd like to see you do a few more videos with some quality meerschaum pipes in the future. I believe a quality meer can make a great novice pipe for numerous reasons. That's what I started with blew the cob pipes I tried out of the water for me imho. I may have to look into a nice quality briar pipe in the future. My goal was to avoiding having to purchase a 7 day sets resting pipes etc. I also love watching the meer pipes color overall. Anyways I'm rambling keep up the good work look forward to your next video and some more of that mountain 🎶. Who knows maybe one day we could pick a few tunes together. I'm sure I could follow on the guitar or fiddle.
I'm a novice pipe smoker. Should I dedicate certain pipes to certain tobaccos? For example, to use aromatics in one pipe and non aromatics in another. Whats is everyones opinion?
I 100% agree with your findings. That is why I have about 4 to 6 tobaccos that I call my must have and I buy them in bulk. Better better better as they age.
Ahhh yes, loved the actual smoking experience you did. Guess tobacco ages like fine wine. Great video, so glad to have you back doing videos. How did you get so many subscribers? I've been doing TH-cam pipe community videos for about a year, and have 474 subscribers wich I am extremely thankful for, but would love to learn how to improve my videos more and obtain more subs. Maby just time I guess.
Would it not be better to cellar in a Mason jar? So you could pull a bowl out maybe every year or so and try it, to see when it hits its peak? Even keep a log on how's its doing.
I may have to buy some tins and stash them away somewhere so I not tempted to open them. I age my cigars for a year or two, but I don't think it makes a huge difference.
Pipestud sells unopened aged tins of tobacco that people have consigned to him. He does it every Saturday at 10am/cst but you gotta get to his website right when he uploads them because everything goes within a couple minutes.
Totally worth it in my opinion. In fact I just cracked open a tin of G.L. Pease Jack Knife Plug last night in a video. It was such a good smoke. Mellowed out the Kentucky and really smoothed out and married the flavors! I was going to give it three years but it was swelled up nicely so I cracked it open. 👍👍
This is a bit off topic, but I have a question. I'm new to the pipe world. Just bought my first pipe the other day. Went with a MM cob. My question is - Do you find the need to tamp during the smoking process other than at the beginning? Thanks again, so happy to see you doing more videos. ❤
Yes, it is one of the fundamentals of smoking a pipe. Tobacco burns like an upside-down fire in a fireplace. In a fireplace the embers are underneath the fuel in this case wood, smoking a pipe the fuel in this case the tobacco is on the bottom and the embers are on top. In order to keep the tobacco burning you must keep the ember close to the tobacco. As you smoke your pipe the tobacco burns and grows ash, as it grows the ember gets smaller, so in order to keep the ember close you must tamp the ash down on top of the unburnt tobacco. If you are just starting out. I suggest you watch my videos, I cover every topic you may have questions on including this question
I have a question for Mr.Muttonchops: What are your thoughts about the notion of mistreatment of the tobacco farmers in the more undeveloped countries? I would really like to smoke a pipe, but i am very ambivalent since alot of the tobacco industry is so unfair to the farmers. Is their a brand out there that only sells tobacco made in the US or EU? Thanks for this lovely channel.
He purchased all of it at once! So by the end of the year it will be a year “cellared” I guess. But to answer your question, no! It allows us all to smoke along
Great episode!!! Always wonderful listening to experience and wisdom from you. Thank you for all you gives us. I hope to some day be half as a great teacher. Merry Christmas and Yuletide Blessings.
Greetings Mr. Muttonchop and happy new year. My question is this. When you cellar tobacco does it actually have to be in the cellar or is any cool dry location acceptable?
"Until I pass away."
You, sir, are simply not allowed!
I’m only about a month and a half into my pipe smoking career, kind of glad I got to miss the MIA of Muttnchop. Love your videos. They have helped me a lot. Merry Christmas to all!!! May your pipes stay full.

Pipe Smoking is a fun hobby. Happy Holidays.
He's a great guy Billy. We all definitely missed him while he was MIA. Happy Christmas, and happy piping!
Same and agreed.
I really miss your old background of your pipe and tobacco collection.
Me too.. There was Something homely about it.

I read about New Zealand. Wonder what they will legislate against next?
Great work - in Australia if we wanted to have that sort of cellar we'd need to sell the house - and sell 2 of the kids!
Dang. 240 tins is a fortune
@@jordanbeyer7607
Yes, it does add up. But what will the prices be in 10 years? Or if we can still buy tobacco at all.

Well, I know what I'm trying next time I place an order. Very interesting information, enjoyed watching the results.
Have you had the opportunity to smoke “Queen City?” It’s a blend Straus Tobacconist carries in downtown Cincinnati. If so, what are your thoughts?
I agree, cellaring is definitely worth it. Blends that I don't smoke all that often it's nice to have some cellared when you get the urge to tuck into it.
Thank you so much! Question: Do you find a difference between cellaring in original unopened sealed tin vs. placing in a sealed mason jar?
I find they are both about the same, as long as you put the tobacco in the jar and keep it there for 7 to 10 years.
Great question!
@@DocTheElder what about keeping your tobacco in a refrigerator
Excellent vid Chris. Thanks a lot. Have a great week.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 to you and your family.
Hey, you are still alive, you kinda snuck back on youtube under my radar. Thanks for video.
M.Chop - The thinking mans pipe smoker.
Great work thanks.
Merry Christmas to you and the family. It's very interesting to see just how much the 'core' flavors/tenets (i.e., the breadiness vs. fruit tastes) changed over time. I'm really looking forward to cracking a tin of my favorites in 5 and 10 years.
Love the pipes you choose
Master Yoda you are! Glad you are back Sir!
I know Virginias are good to cellar. But what about English blends? Do they improve after 5, 10, 15 years? Thanks for everyone's help.
It really is incredible that a tobacco that was cellar will even loose its harshness after a few years .
Merry Christmas Mutton Chop 😉
Another outstanding video. Thank you so much for what you do for the pipe fellowship.
Great to see these videos from a top guy
I'm a novice pipe smoker. Should I dedicate certain pipes to certain tobaccos? For example, to use aromatics in one pipe and non aromatics in another. Whats is everyones opinion?
Merry Christmas to you and your family mutton chop
Merry x-mass and a happy new year 😊
Thanks for your help in my pipe hobby truly appreciate your video and views please Carey on with the expert advice
(You did cleanse with orange pop)
Is it common that the bottom of the bowl is the best smoke? It always seems to be the case with me.
A personal question: when and why did you grow those splendorous sideburns? Thank you for your video and have a Merry Christmas.
I don’t smoke, but your videos are relaxing to watch. Thank you very much!
I may have to buy some tins and stash them away somewhere so I not tempted to open them. I age my cigars for a year or two, but I don't think it makes a huge difference.
The Great MuttnChop has spoken.
Does opening cellared jars every half year or so make a difference in the aging process? Some have recommended this
Is there a website where we could buy cellered tobacco? That would be awesome to try some, without waiting a decade in cellering my own.
Pipestud sells unopened aged tins of tobacco that people have consigned to him. He does it every Saturday at 10am/cst but you gotta get to his website right when he uploads them because everything goes within a couple minutes.
I have a local B&M pipe/cigar store sometimes they get consignment tins, or even have some bulk jars that they've aged.
Just subscribed to ya. 👌
What does it mean when I don't taste anything but smoke? Am I smoking it wrong?
A comforting voice returns...
Thank you
I have a question for Mr.Muttonchops: What are your thoughts about the notion of mistreatment of the tobacco farmers in the more undeveloped countries? I would really like to smoke a pipe, but i am very ambivalent since alot of the tobacco industry is so unfair to the farmers. Is their a brand out there that only sells tobacco made in the US or EU?
Thanks for this lovely channel.
for the blend club will you be smoking cellared tobaccos are you buying new to test
He purchased all of it at once! So by the end of the year it will be a year “cellared” I guess. But to answer your question, no! It allows us all to smoke along
Question, What are the environmental conditions for "cellaring"? Can it be kept other places than cellar? Temp? Humidity?
Put the jars in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight, I have mine in photo boxes stacked in a closet where the temp is around 68 to 72 degrees.
