Jessie Reyez tells us why Yessie is her most vulnerable album yet

- Jessie Reyez has had a meteoric rise over the last few years. She went from playing bars in Toronto to writing songs for artists like Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris to having a triple platinum single, touring with Billie Eilish and gaining millions of fans all over the world. Things were moving really fast for her, so when the pandemic happened she was able to take a step back and process some things she had been putting off. That led her to make her new album, Yessie. Reyez sat down with Tom Power to tell us how slowing things down allowed her to be truly open in a way she wasn’t before.

We don’t need a translation from the interviewer after EVERY little thing she says. Like she’s so eloquent and well spoken. We understand my dude. I know it’s a way of him showing “I’m listening and I understand “. But just let her express herself. She’s like an eagle floating in the air. She’s got this. She knows when to use the current to float and when to strike down.
she has grown and blossomed so much since her last album. I'm happy for her and very excited for what her future holds because this is just the beginning for her.
"I always love in a tidal wave way, that always left me dry. And the recovery from that was scary too cuz the recovery was like Everest, yanno? ... And I think that part of my growth is realizing that, as opposed to approaching love as a 'Holy fuck here is another Everest again.' and scared, and projecting anything that I have gone through in the past. Well I come back to the now and I'm like well listen, if it happens, and if it goes left and if the tidal wave comes and if you go dry, it's fine. Because the water is abundant regardless. And you'll be okay."

Note to this interviewer: we perfectly understand what Jessie's saying, we don't need a translator. And you kept doing this whole 'let me break this down for the audience'. Totally unnecessary. And frankly condescending. Jessie, I love your interviews, and how you bring us into your songwriting process, and open up your artistic world to us.

I just really love the way you can genuinely see her soul peering through what she's speaking. She feels what she is saying, you can see it. It makes me feeeeeel to listen to her.
I loved this interview so much. I remember when Jessie gave her Discord fam little snippets of each song on the album and had us vote for them before FRAUD was released. It felt so cool to be trusted to help her with whatever it was that she needed (she didn't say what the vote was for) as her fans.
