    "Honest Mechanic"?
    Good luck trying to find one. Most of them are crooked AF.

    for me, the real odometer of the car is the condition of the seats.

      Although it can depend on the girth of the previous owner- I once looked at buying a car from Robby Coltrane (Hagrid in Harry Potter) The rest of the car was nice, but the seat looked like a million miles :)

    CarFax is one of the best ways. Look at the mileage as it goes up and reconcile with what you see on the odometer.

      Analog can be changed, but it leaves behind clues like marred screws, numbers not lining up, or instrument clusters being removed. Not like digital where all you need is a scanner that leaves no trace.

    You need to mention broken odometers. When you test drive a car, see if the odometer changes. If the Carfax report has the same milage, the odometer is broken and you can make a guess when it broke. Some vehicles are prone to this failure and the sales people do not check for it. The car becomes an auction car at that point and you can negotiate appropriately since you would be their only buyer.

    I want one of those hackers clock kickers.
    We used to kick clocks on the old mechanical odometers at used car lots all the time...back in the 70s and 80s

    Coach, I spent over 50 years in the auto repair mostly as an owner the last time I used my tools was 1978, so I am not familiar with how the electronics work for this. The old analog speedometers were rolled back all the time and you know who the main culprits were. Once the mileage was changed it was fairly easy for us to tell by looking. The numbers sometimes would not align up perfect or the dash screws had signs of use. The vehicle would be brought to our shop and others for maintenance or simple repair, our invoices were handwritten and no history readily available. Patrick makes it sound like every vehicle history CARFAX has and I don't believe that is the case, only the ones serviced at dealers or a CARFAX affiliate shop. They called me I assume because we were ASE Blue Seal and couldn't understand why I wouldn't be a part of CARFAX, I have two shops and it was free, I assume it was worth nothing for a shop. They couldn't get my info unless they could access our computers. I would caution shop owners to consider this carefully before signing up and I would encourage Patrick not to use "every car" when talking this up. This was a good video.

    Can you use a scan tool that plugs into the OBD port to get the true mileage? I heard of this before and I want to confirm yes or no.

    • @Jaylikescar
      @Jaylikescar หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes depends on the car if the ecm stores the mileage or just in the cluster however both can be manipulated. Just look for service history or have a mechanic look at it. We can tell the health of engine transmission and suspension to tell if the milage is approximate.

    • @cousinjohncarstuff4568
      @cousinjohncarstuff4568 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. If the person is lazy like this guy, the actual mileage can be retrieved from whichever module stores the info. Check around, there may be a shop with the right tool to verify the mileage.

    Simple solution: make it so you need a license to buy one similar to what is done for locksmith tools. No one else really needs to be able to just buy one from Amazon or anywhere else.

    So the woman who sold her husband's 911 Porsche for a dollar after she caught him cheating wasn't a good deal for the guy that bought it?😊
