The difference between the reaction to Jaws and the possible reaction to Hungry is the fact that sharks dont deserve the reputayion they have as bloodthirsty murderfish, hippos absolutely would deserve the title of Horrifying Fat Murder Horses.
I always thought that hippos were cute funny jolly animals based on the few times I saw them on tv as a little kid. This was back in the day when there were only like 1 channel that ever showed nature stuff and certainly nothing scary like we've seen for the past 30 years on multiple channels and online. When I was little and first saw footage of them swimming and shitting underwater, it changed my perspective a little bit but after seeing clips of them killing alligators and chasing boats and brutally fighting each other and biting each other's tails off, yeah I'd say Horrifying Fat Murder Horses is accurate. Maybe closer to a bull.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been a horror movie about a blood thirsty hippo before seeing as despite their lazy and harmless appearance they are actually more likely to kill you than a shark
Because if you tried to make a musical theme for hippos like John Williams made for a shark, it wouldn't work because harmonicas, kazoos and tubas aren't inherently scary instruments.
or what about flip it's on its head, and have a horror movie where the monsters come out durring DAY instead night, i guess none wants to do this becuase would have to atualy make it horrific instead of relying on the primal fear of the dark.
I was 10 when Jaws came out in 1975 and I can attest that there was a shitload of shark books and magazines and National Enquirer-type papers for a couple of years after that, and sharks were indeed portrayed as bloodthirsty beasts. I read a lot of them at the mall bookstores. Jaws made me scared of oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers, puddles, baths, and swimming pools. I'm okay now except I still won't go in the ocean past my knees after seeing a shark in Kaanapaali while body surfing back in 1998.

"maybe it will do for hippos, what jaws did for sharks" You mean result in a huge increase in the number of sharks culled out of fear, despite them on killing about 5 people a year, while we kill over 60 million sharks per year. Love that for hippos.
No, people did not start hunting down sharks to kill because Jaws made people afraid of them. There was no huge increase tied to the release of Jaws. The issue Jaws poses for shark conservation is that it makes it more difficult for advocates to convince people sharks are worth protecting when the primary depictions of them are exaggerated and monstrous. Jaws made more people hyper-aware of how dangerous a shark can potentially be, reducing their inherent sympathy towards them as animals, in turn reducing the support that efforts to protect shark populations receive. Somehow this complex sociological issue just became "Jaws made people hate sharks so now people kill sharks more" in people's minds, but that is not the issue.
@@JayStrang1 The movie led to the prevalence of shark-fishing tournaments, especially in California. A commercial fishery that along with bycatch in a gillnet fishery, almost completely wiped out the population of white sharks along the west coast of North America. To be entirely honest, I was hoping Scary Movie 6 was written and directed by this pair.
