That troll speedrun level was a great designed level, it was kind of frustrating seeing you not understand how the level worked, still pretty fun though
@Enmity the Kindhearted Well if it means anything to you, I haven't had sleep tonight and yet noticed them pretty quickly. Fact is it wasn't pick-a-path. It's no more pick-a-path than a level with a clear condition is luck-of-the-draw.
I can't get over Dave not giving a like to the "200 likes" course when by his own admission, the only part bad about it was his own gameplay, but then gushing over the night castle course. 🤣
I think speed run trolls would be amazing since you would be focusing on speed instead of strategy. This would definitely extend the playtime of the level.
DGR: The only thing bad is there isn't a checkpoint before the boss fight Literally Nintendo: Puts a checkpoint midway through castle levels, not right before the boss

I never thought I'd click on a Mario Maker video and end up witnessing a colorful, bouncy crucifixion. I was stunned. ...and then I heard the phrase, "Hot ding-dongs never lie."

Pretty sure if you'd gone for the 50 between the Thwomps at the end of the second part of the last level (before the room before the boss fight) you would have found a checkpoint. That's why there's a second entry door to the boss room.
You got 2 really decent levels that were made not nearly as fun as they could have been by bad checkpoint placement. The first was the minigame level which needed a checkpoint like 3 rooms earlier. And the second was that last level which needed a checkpoint before the boss fight.
*Did Dave really not realise how themes can change the night effects yet?* Night-ground theme gives most enemies underwater physics, but some of them just have odd physics, and power-ups also have an odd behavior. The speed run troll felt like less of an eye roll than traditional troll levels… traditional levels feel like they just unfairly cram you through 1-2 block spaces on the same screen for too long, and it all comes down to whether you stood there or there at the sound of the on off block

I'm just saying that it's a very similar formula to troll levels, except instead of being more focused on taking your time to learn each troll or to figure it out in advance, it's mostly trying to encourage you to just move forward, as though it were just a speedrun level, instead of a troll level In my honest opinion the speedrun troll was a bit more of an eye roll than some of the good normal ones, a few of the trolls that stuck out to me as poorly made were the bonzai bill one, where there wasn't any sort of indicator to check downwards, and the ending- getting down there is easy and expected enough, but the note blocks that seemingly served no purpose wasn't all too interesting either, it's not like slowing down would have killed you, and jumping to try to avoid the note blocks would have just hit the kaizo blocks anyway and thus wouldn't have punished you either- admittedly I think that was prime real-estate for some way to send them back to the fire-flower cross death, but instead it just kinda felt like a hollow attempt at a troll with no punishments :p Yes, this kind of format has potential, and while there was plenty of trolls that would subvert your expectation of a speedrun level, there weren't all that many that subverted the expectations of a troll level, given the over usage of the rule of three, the relatively hollow trolls with no way to predict them other than going off of instinct, and the admittedly lack-luster hints given, that didn't just outright show the answer. I love this new troll speedrun😂😂😍😂😂
how do we send dave levels we made
Imagine if when you picked the speedrun tag for your level, you could enter a secret button combination to make it a troll speedrun
The speed run troll felt like less of an eye roll than traditional troll levels… traditional levels feel like they just unfairly cram you through 1-2 block spaces on the same screen for too long, and it all comes down to whether you stood there or there at the sound of the on off block
In good troll levels a lot of it can kinda be deducted by previous 'hints', for example if an indicator gets you killed, there's a good chance the next one will too, but the one after is safe- not because 'oh you chose wrong so you die', but more like they build a habit only to mess with your expectations, but this is a very common trope, one which this speedrun troll level certainly overused
But there's plenty of other trolls in some levels that use the player's tunnel vision to their advantage too, for example there might very clearly be a gap you can't get into with a mushroom, but you see a mushroom and so of course you wanna grab it, because damage boosting is a very powerful tool- and then you end up dying for it, because you didn't look ahead
Another way they can make it interesting is through twice-twice's, you see something happen, so you expect that to happen again, and then fall for it because the outcome changed-
Another unique way to make it interesting is to really mix up what people would expect in a troll level overall- it's all about subverting expectations, for example there was that one level that was designed as a link troll level, but it was actually just an auto-level right from the get-go, if Dave had AFK'd after starting it he would have won, but because it's a troll level you expect to have to put in a lot of the work to avoid stuff and win
The speedrun troll level uses a few of these tactics- for example right at the beginning with the munchers, ya gotta throw the pow block up at the last one, and only the last one- after it built a habit, and you expected to have to throw it forward based on previous knowledge of speedrun levels- but, it can be predicted you'd need to do something different at that last one, given how troll levels tend to repeat something for it to become a habit, then change the outcome, and with how perfectly one to one repetitive that beginning was, it just felt too obvious the last one would be different, making it, in my eyes, not as interesting
While I'm not saying anything like 'your opinion is wrong for only thinking the speedrun troll was a good troll!" I'm just saying that it's a very similar formula to troll levels, except instead of being more focused on taking your time to learn each troll or to figure it out in advance, it's mostly trying to encourage you to just move forward, as though it were just a speedrun level, instead of a troll level
In my honest opinion the speedrun troll was a bit more of an eye roll than some of the good normal ones, a few of the trolls that stuck out to me as poorly made were the bonzai bill one, where there wasn't any sort of indicator to check downwards, and the ending- getting down there is easy and expected enough, but the note blocks that seemingly served no purpose wasn't all too interesting either, it's not like slowing down would have killed you, and jumping to try to avoid the note blocks would have just hit the kaizo blocks anyway and thus wouldn't have punished you either- admittedly I think that was prime real-estate for some way to send them back to the fire-flower cross death, but instead it just kinda felt like a hollow attempt at a troll with no punishments :p
Yes, this kind of format has potential, and while there was plenty of trolls that would subvert your expectation of a speedrun level, there weren't all that many that subverted the expectations of a troll level, given the over usage of the rule of three, the relatively hollow trolls with no way to predict them other than going off of instinct, and the admittedly lack-luster hints given, that didn't just outright show the answer. Overall it feels more like a rather uninteresting troll level that was just layered on top of a so-so speedrun level
Alright anyway, with my two page essay completed- which admittedly I don't expect anyone to read- time to not comment again for another two months XD
Anyway, hope ya managed to read this all, again not bashing your opinion, just saying it felt more like a poorly made troll level than a speedrun level with trolls put into it in any kind of interesting way-
10:36 imagine if that was real life and dgr dies to a rock to the head and In heaven he says that would be funny except that he ded lmao
