I think it's beautiful how one of their earliest songs has a chorus that says "she's not just another face" and the last song they ever released on an album has a chorus that says "I'm not just another face." It seems like over the years he grew to find his own worth. I fucking love modern baseball.
Modern baseball got me through a really dark place in my life. I started listening to them in 2013 after my grandfather passed away from cancer. I would just feel like I had no one who understood what I was going through and that I was alone even though I had people who cared for me. I was suicidal but hid it well. I feel like my dad knew something was up bc he’d hear me listening to my emo music and ask me if I was ok and then always tell me he wouldn’t know what would happen if he lost me. Those moments and the lyrics of Jake and Brendan helped me get through it. I still have bad days, weeks and months, but I put on some pop punk and emo indie and remember I’m not alone.
bro, I'm glad you made it out of that dark time. I went through exactly the same as you in in 2017. I remember getting the news and driving to the hospital playing 'Everyday' out loud with tears streaming down my face. Mobo and Holy Ghost saved me and I'll never forget it
I looooove real friends but i do get what you mean i dont think theyre trying to make sadness an aesthetic but more like mainstream people found their music when rap was making sad an aesthetic and the mainstream people where like “woah this is so cool this is what actual sad people listen to” and then kinda just used real friends to look cool. Its kinda the same thing that happened to Pink Floyd, people think theyre cool for listening to music like ours so they buy shirts and listen to the most popular songs they have. Yes most of real friends songs are sad and stuff but i feel like its more to help people who are going through things. To give people someone to relate to, to have someone express their thoughts when we cant, and to teach us how to cope. Tho most of their songs are sad they do also sing ab forgetting, moving on, accepting you for you.
just another face is definitely my favorite and go to song on this album I felt so alone and depress when this album come out and I remember hearing the singles and I knew this album was gonna be different from their past two albums in a great way then listening to the whole album I couldn't stop crying after the first song then at the end, Just Another Face hits hard and I felt so connected to the song
I think their first two albums are great, but I think Holy Ghost represents their first start-to-finish masterpiece. The maturity and brevity shown on the album make it one of my favourites
this album dropped at a really important time of my life: I was a senior in high school and recovering from a really scary depressive episode and growing up. the lyrics and songwriting really hit me hard. I never really paid attention to how the album art had mormons, I grew up mormon lol. this album saved my life, not even kidding.
Thank you so much for making this series. I’ve cried so much watching it because I just love this band so incredibly much and I’m so happy to find someone on my favorite platform to make content paying homage to their legacy. Please don’t ever stop. ❤️
The first tour they did for this album was amazing! Modern Baseball and Joyce Manor with Thin Lips. One of the best shows and best tours I have ever gone to!
@@NateTheMateForever same, dawg and real annie definitely need to be released, also are you gonna do a video on their whole discography like you're doing for mobo or just safe and also no fear?

Thank you so much for this, Nate. Holy Ghost is that album that’s been with me when no one else has. It’s something I can listen to whenever and it always helps. This video meant a lot and I’m excited to see what’s to come.
Thank you so much for making these videos, they help people like me understand even more of my favourite band. When the singles and album came out, id just listen to them on repeat for days. I watched the documentary two times in a row from the second it came out.
I remember being at that show from the first clip, it was at the Vintage Vinyl record store in NJ, and little did I know that was the last time I would ever be able to see them play
These videos have been awesome. I love Mobo and listening to your analysis of each album just made me love the songs even more; getting an insight into each song, hearing its backstory and other things I never knew. Keep up the great work
Phenomenal record. Over time, I've grown to view Holy Ghost as their second best record. Second of course to the completely unfuckwithable You're Gonna Miss It All.
I know where that place is in Utah. It’s right next to a Guitar Center and a JoAnn’s. It’s in a place called Taylorsville. Unfortunately that seagull book and the shopko next to it shut down..
@@NateTheMateForever congrats on the growth my dude you hella deserve it. I also really like that you're branching out, if you ever feel like branching out even more you should totally do it all it can do is open you up to a wider audience, also I feel like a non-music related Nate video would also be pretty interesting.
Man, I know one of the things that helped them write this album. Listened to a bit of The Weakerthans. If you're going to draw influence from a band, that's a good one to draw from. This is a great album. Can't believe it took me this long to find it. I guess that's what happens when you get old lol.
I think Modern Baseball will come back someday down the road. Not any time the next few years, but their reunion will be like any other band that took a significant hiatus.
Applecider I dont mind into what if... is one of my favorite modern baseball moments. I saw them for the last time on my 21st birthday, they played apple cider but not right into what if and I was pretty salty tbh

first off, thank you so much. and could you expand on what you mean a bit? totally open to that, and always looking to push myself out of my comfort zone. looking forward to hearing back
Hey, this is kinda related to Mobo but can you do a similar series on Sorority Noise? Cam and Brenden were/are friends and Brenden was even featured on their sophomore album “Joy Departed” Thanks Man. Love the content!!
Glen Nevling I actually plan on it! I love SN so much man, very few bands accurately portray what it feels like to be depressed/anxious. I believe Bren is featured on “Corrigan” and Jake is featured on “Art School Wannabe” The part where he says “here’s the thing, I’m doin fine” that’s Jake haha

id like to here you’re take on this, but I believe that he wrote Hiding after Brendan. the lines “my straight line shooter” and “amass the coins to displace debt to you” make me think this way. Brendan was in a place that jake absolutely didn’t understand, stealing funds from the band to fuel his addiction, really really low. Listening to the drop, it sounds like a conversation between him and Brendan more than anything, calling about his future, wanting to repair everything. “With floral sutures” are you hiding or have I abandoned you? let me LEARN HERE, I AM IN PURSUIT OF ALL I CAN UNDO. idk man, i think its really about him.
