    I am here because I asked youtube about growing as much in my 10' x 10' x 10' height. I am in the process of building a small greenhouse and the goal is to grow as much inside as possible and still have a couple chairs inside to enjoy the space. I have one thing that I will be doing to grow as much as possible. I ordered what they call, Mr. Stacky. These are garden pots that stack up. Five pots in all. So if you can imagine pots on some concrete blocks and 8' tall. Planting cucumbers that come down, fence if needed. This way I am using the entire area. Same with tomatoes, most likly cherry tomatoes vines. Doing this will use much of my space. I have three smaller 5 pots for strawberries and 3 sets of 5 pots for other veggies. Any how I have not done this in the process of building the greenhouse using Superstrut. Building a greenhouse that will last for a lifetime. I had a much larger greenhouse but the heating was to costly. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

    So Grateful for the video. I have exactly that much space to plant and I’d like to get as much vegetables as I can in this space.

    Very cool use of space. Looking forward to see how much this produces. Often wondered how little space is needed to feed two people, yet to see that.

    Actually I’m living this experiment myself! I have a small space like your 10x and am doing a raised bed garden for the first time. Actually it’s my first garden ever. So I can’t wait to see how your small garden developes!

    I have Swiss Chard and Kale in my garden. Also, add some flowers to the garden to bring in the bees. In between my Tomatoes I have marigold and basil and lettuce. So the tomatoes will keep the lettuce shaded during the summer. I have a small yard garden similar to that and it works beautifully.

    Definitely grow your plants closer together than you are used to.

    I agree with lettuce and green beans. You could take advantage of your wire fencing and grow pole beans up it. I’d try strawberries in the top of your buckets...do you think that could work? And maybe a dwarf blueberry bush in a corner?

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, maybe I could build a raised shelf in the corner for a small bucket for the blueberry. I thought of beans, but maybe they would have to be behind the tomatoes?

    • @williamscarla01
      @williamscarla01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I agree. Pole beans would be great to train along the north side, with strawberries in the buckets. I'm interested to see how much space the watermelon will take up, but those can also be trained up the mesh.
      Lettuce, beets, kale and chard could be tucked in the shaded areas, and radishes tuck in nicely for a quick harvest. Basil, cilantro and dill would also work great in sunny spots or raised pots. Exciting! Good luck and happy gardening. What a lovely little plot.

    The only thing I would suggest is to make sure your tallest plants are on the north side of the garden and the shorter ones are on the south side so that all plants get adequate sun. Also, rotate new crops in as others reach maturity and can be removed.

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I live in Southern Oregon so the sun is directly overhead in the summer. I do have a challenge with removing the tomatoes because they take all summer to mature. I could just stick with shorter determinaties. That's an option

      @@Growyourheirlooms I was thinking the same thing. For me, I would just rotate your design 180 degrees.

    I watch Patrick at OYR (One Yard Revolution) for lots of great ideas. He has been pruning suckers off indeterminate tomatoes to a single stem (1 per square foot) and planting 2-3 runner beans at the base. They all seem to get along and produce alot. Have fun with the series and look forward to your updates.

    I am interested to see how this goes. I am currently working out of two 5x10 raised beds. I live in the city with a small backyard that I do not own so I am doing what I can. I've been harvesting english peas for days and I look for my potatoes to be done in the next couple weeks. I've also got onions, carrots, zucchini, green beans, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a variety of herbs around the yard. When I harvest the potatoes I am going to try to grow pumpkins for the first time in that spot. May be a little late going in but we'll see.

    Where we are living now we have 0.16 acres .... including the house! So 10 x 10 isn't too far fetched. I have about a dozen buckets ( 3 to 5 gallon) that I have tomatoes and peppers in and 4 raised beds ... 3' x 5' each ... for growing vegetables. I tried an upside down planter once ... takes a lot of water, I think.

      I bet you're right on the water. I guess I'll find out. All of the dwarfs are in 5 gallon buckets and so far so good

    To plant outside I only got around 10m of window ledges so I sympathize with this idea.
    I like planting spices and herbs. Those are usually things that I don't need that much of, so a couple plants already cover most of what I need of them. This very much depends on how you use them though. I currently have basil, thyme, sage, rosemary, peppers, mint, garlic, corriander, chervil, chives, dill and watercress. I expanded heavily this year and will have to see what does well. Also they are all potted.

    About the size of our garden! 2 - 4'x8' beds and 1- 4'x'4 bed. We don't have a fence around it. We put a 4'x8' sheet of hog wire on one side of each big bed. the first bed I planted pickling cucumbers to go up the hog wire (they havent shown up yet...trying to be patient!), there' s a space then turnips, space, beets, space, carrots. The second box has corn (probably for the raccoons if we don't get a fence!) and my husbands varietys of radishes each has a row and the last space by the hog wire has white squash growing up it. The 4x4 box is 4 tomato plants. All other things are growing in pots or in with flowers in our tiny yard; peppers, jalapenos, parsley (for medicinal use), sugar baby watermelons, cantaloupe, spinach and zucchini. Thanks for the video, its pretty amazing what you can grow in a small space!

      Forgot a few items....bunching onion in an old washtub, spinach, and trying potato's in a galvanized steel garbage can (you're suppose to end up with almost a hundred pounds, guess we'll see!) oh and peas! Also planted 2 apple trees each in a big pot and will be doing the same with 2 peach trees. They are in our little yard though.

    I would plant at least one vining cucumber, maybe in one of the hanging pails, and train it along the fence. Try a small fruit variety such as the lemon cucumber. If you grow tomatoes and onions, you must have cucumbers!

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do have some vining seedlings. Maybe hanging between the existing tomatoes. Just wonder if they can handle trailing without the fence and down dangle. might be worth a try, thanks

      I was going to suggest the same thing. Things that have short growing times can be planted with something with longer growing times. The short growing time crops can be harvested early and leave room for the longer growing time crops to grow out and up.
