I’m a musician and even though neither of us are traditional (visual) artists, I think it’s fair to use the title artist proudly! The art you make - don’t short change yourself, it is art - and the videos you create about your art are plenty enough art for you to count as an artist. Don’t even worry about having a message you want to send either, that will just come naturally from your work!
Artists don't always have their full mission/message figured out when they start, or even when they're done. I feel like most of the time, what their work means is discovered over time.
‘Am not an artist…because I don’t have a message…’ then goes into an explanation of his aesthetic BEEP BOP BOOP TRANSLATION thats your message! You my TH-cam fren are an ARTIST! Love you man!
"Are you an artist" is an interesting question, I think often the big artists who people know and draw inspiration from getting their 'message' from their audience rather than it always being what they put out there. You know what I see when I look at Trent's work? I see an inspired creator who does what he loves and loves what he does. I see ideas and combinations that could only come from him. I see the journeys and stories of very little item on his army. Most importantly however, I see creations, stories and ideas captured in a way that would stand the test of time. In 70 years when someone finds a weird looking floating dolphin model on a shelf, they're gonna wonder who came up with it and how not "hey that's not art it's just a dolphin toy mashed together"
You have a stronger message than you know!! I interpret the name of arcane ugly to represent you message, there is magic in the imperfections, they tell a story of the process and what went into the art that you make!! You can't sculpt without a hammer and chisel and getting ugly, I feel a lot of artists try to cover up that aspect of the final piece whilst you don't! A huge inspiration!!

As an art teacher I am so glad to hear you refer to yourself as an artist. Art is so much more than one thing, and as I always tell my students, if what you created was fun, taught you something or has meaning to you then it was a total success. Really enjoying your show!
Being an artist really just is being able to create something, anything and working in tandem with your imagination. That you definitely have down pat. I love watching what you create because you really do think outside the box. That's a strength, not a weakness. It means you have a broad minds eye. 😁
Hey Trent. Idk if you'll see this, but you inspired me to change the way that i look at the models that I make. I've been experimenting a lot with using different mediums and styles that I never would have done otherwise if I was just doing Warhammer or d&d models. So I just wanna say, thanks. Seeing your creative process has really helped me grow as a hobbyist and as an artist.
Art is an amazingly broad term and artist is similar. There is an entire genre of art called readymades, pieces of art that are just a piece, with minor modifications. A signed toilet, a bulk order of lollies. An entire genre of Poetry is dedicated towards the found word. Taking words and turning them into something else. Appropriation of other works to create something new and transformative is art. Its a very interesting and fantastic way to do art. Working with materials, changing them, painting them, working with what you have, it's all art and as it's creator, you are an artist.
I feel like you have your artistic voice already, but it cannot be "labeled" in common terms. You inspire and encourage. You share your bad-assed mo' fo' ideas freely with the world and gladly invite us to build on them. That is freakin' noble as shit!!!!! You create art, and you take us on the journey, which I'm profoundly grateful for. Thanks, mate. Cheers!
Making stuff within the confines of "for D&D or warhammer can be good for people because constraint and limitation breeds creativity. It can be hard to create something if there are no boundaries. Sometimes the challenge of being told "create something but it must remain ________" or "create something with ______ aesthetic" can be like a puzzle to solve. That being said, always take time to do whatever you want when the inspiration strikes. Also, you are one of my favorite artists ever. I bought your Night Sky poster and have been following since the beginning man. Keep it up.

Just a note on the whole "am I an artist" thing, you enjoy art and create pieces that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye whilst do it as a profession/hobby. By definition you're an artist. All this speech of having to have a meaning or goal often for other artists helps to direct their art/help them in the creation process and isn't how everyone operates. You've already found a way that works for you, all you gotta do is iterate and improve as an artist, not worry about your designation as one.
Artist here, you definitely count - you have a vibe and that’s one of the main aspects. Also you’re very creative- I come here when I’m feeling uninspired, just to see someone working and enjoying their craft :)
Oh man, finding your voice is so important. I too am on a constant search for this. I'm not sure if it can ever be found, but the intention to get there moves you closer to it whether or not it's noticeable on a daily basis or not. Just the fact that you're wrestling with these ideas means that you are indeed an artist, and a great one to boot! Your work is tres cool!
Not that one necessarily needs something to convey in order to be an artist but: While it can be argued that you indeed have a message you convey, I personally think that you certainly convey a feeling and/or attitude with your stuff. The reason I follow you as an artist is because of the feeling I get whenever I see something you made (be it videos, bashes or arcane ugly). You as an artist/person and the creations you do have something that lets people feel something.
Nothing is new under the sun, I think the ultimate attribute is taking things that already exists and putting a part of you in it to make something unique.
I think the message for an artist could simply just be the act of creation itself. That's what is so empowering about your work and videos, it inspires others to be creative too.
Of course you are an artist !!! I love seeing you create stuff from nowhere, seeing the process of transformation. The different parts that should not be able to fit together but in the end create something awesome that could not NOT fit together (if you understand what I'm trying to say). Awesome video as always.
Lovely Video! I have always loved you work because you just unapologetically do what makes you happy, even if its out of the norm or super difficult or just odd, It is such an inspiration. You are whole heartily an artist! I love coming to your videos and just getting to watch you make stuff, it always feel like talking to a friend who just wants to vibe and show you the cool stuff there making c: Also friken awesome stuff, love the giant sea(?) monster and the Cthulhu is hilarious XD
I love how you approach your craft, and that you are constantly thinking and changing. I feel like I've been in stasis since I started posting on socials, like I can't post anything that doesn't fit in the tiny box of things that got noticed. I draw, but I also sculpt, mini paint, terrain build and create random things. I feel like I have trouble sharing anything but my drawings because those are the most digestible to the public, they got the most 'likes' Its a suffocating way to create as an artist of many mediums. I appreciate you sharing your stream of conscience, it makes me feel bolder, like I should just create and share because its what I like doing and for no other reason. Seriously has been a struggle for me this past year, thanks for your art!
I love all the colours and soft mellow music in your videos. Your videos are really calming, make my day and make me want to do something. Thank you for amazing videos and blogs!
To me, and thtas want i love about your content, is that you really want People to join in on being creative. In their own way. Like with the monsterbash, or your video for free terrain. You encourage People to go for it. So yeah really cool!
The bootleg Cthulhu is a great parallel to some of Chris Ware's early work. His book Monograph is amazing and I found a huge amout of inspiration in my creative outlets because of it. Well done dude.
Even if you have't found your voice yet seeing you working with the materials tells the viewers a few things. It tells us that one doesn't need "art supplies" in order to make something. It tells us that if we want to try kitbash or drawing that we should just go for it, there are no wrong styles or ideas just ideas waiting to be put into reality. And of course hearing you explain your thought process and ideas it tells us that, again, just go for it even if the results aren't going to be what we expected. Sometime that can be a good thing and spark the imagination even more. Please don't think that you need to find your voice just let it come to you, you're doing great! I've said this before but i'll say it again, thank you for giving me the push to make my own tabletop rpg, your first video on Arcane Ugly was the push i needed for that and i've learned quite a bit since then, even if i never get to play it i still have fun trying to figure out the balance and mechanics of it. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon if the mindset is there.
Making things just to make things is the best. Love those kind of videos. That's what drew me to your channel honestly. The simple, relaxed videos of you making weird kitbashes
Some very interesting stuff there. And now some advice : )B One way of understanding creative, is to look at the opposite, destructive, which causes chaos; and the opposite of chaos is order and design which is the result of intelligence. The last step of that process I'll leave that to you to figure out. Lovely seeing you both today.
Just yesterday I made a couple of tree from copper wire and it was so much fun. I'm realizing as I get into art more just how much I love to make stuff. Especially in 3 dimensions.
Love the kitbashed Cthulhu. If there has been anything that influenced my horror art more it was HP Lovecraft and Cthulhu in general. The first time I was ever introduced to the Big C was an old Real Ghostbusters episode. Been in love ever since.
Others have touched on this already but I thought I would let you know what "message" I get from your videos. You do what you want to or feel inspired to, you don't seem to force yourself to do things for anybody other than yourself, you have fun with it. And in the process of all that, you learn new skills and you grow as an artist and a person. I actually find you to be one of the biggest inspirations to this side of my life. I always find myself thinking about the time value of things that I'm doing (a side effect of having jobs that required constant attention to how much time things take), but your videos remind me that I don't always need to be productive in a traditional sense, my time doesn't have to have value to anybody else as long as I get something from it. Anyway, this ended up being longer than I intended and maybe what I am alone in this take away but all of it is really just to say I appreciate the videos and keep up the good work, just keep doing the things you enjoy and I'll probably keep watching forever, even if you decide to take up ballet instead or something.
When you think about it, all creative work is taking inspiration from things out in the world, and using them as a language to convey our own thoughts and feelings. There's no truly "original" work. Only varying levels of kit-bash. We don't always know what we're conveying. But it does say something. I think one of the functions of creating art is to act as a mirror we can hang up to see ourselves.
My dude, I say this every time you post a video. I'm here to watch you being you and your creative magic. It is a constant source of inspiration and always gives me the sense that if I just do something and get my hands dirty, I can actually make something. You make crazy things look approachable and achievable. You make it look like even if I do something not perfect, that it can still be great. As someone who puts things off because I can't do them perfectly, it means so much to that your approach makes me feel that. So thank you, and if you still don't feel you have a voice (you totally do and it's awesome), please consider that while you decide what you want your voice to be.
Trent, you are one of the best artists i know. All the artists in the world always look up to someone better then them, often not realizing theyre already far beyond what they saw as amazing and unachievable at the begining of their journey. Like yes u r just using other peoples work for kitbashing, but if someone put one of your kitbashes in front of me even without knowing u made it, id def say yep that is Trent and i think that is what makes u an artist and it def makes that piece YOUR art. P.S.: Also ur my favourite youtuber as well as your videos are so different from everybodys else, its just so calming, and cozy, idk
Just dropping a comment to say that of course you're an artist! No matter what your source materials are (which you've built tones of custom models) or why you decide to build something (including if you just want to) you are being creative and your creativity is great! You build things for the pure passion of doing it and that's the best reason to be an artist. Keep up making sick ass shit!
Kitbashing is just like a game buying assters to fill out their world. The individual parts might not be 100% yours. But when you use them to finish or fill out your vision. Then it helps you make your Idea and that Idea is yours
You are absolutely an artist. Kit bashing is (in my unimportant opinion) 3D collage, and there are so many great artists that use collage to express themselves.
As an artist taking things made by other people and creating new things out of them is how we make things that progress creativity. Musicians remixing songs and genres. Painters transcribing the works of older paintings, digital artists collaging photos to create fantasy environments. You could build a house out of lego bricks and build something ok or you could use actual bricks and with the time you save be able to invest the house with more of your creativity.
I am very grateful to see this at a time when my career creates so much conflict with my need to create minis and the love I have for it. It is really comforting to find this message at a time when even my economy does not allow me much more than starting from waste to create. Now I am determined to launch my creations, when I do I would like you to be one of the first to see them and give an opinion. Thank you again and continue giving strength to that voice that you already have and it goes so far Good vibes from Colombia
I see a lot of people here trying to find your justification for being an artist but I have always felt like artists are the only persons who can confidently answer the question "Why did you do/make it?" with "I donno, but it's cool, isn't it?" and the only honest answer to that one is "Yes".
Woah, i just found your channel through the monster mash I saw on Jazzas channel and damn i love this. And I'd love some to just decorate my room with. I love the idea of how they are like little eastereggs to be found in my livingroom and the mandrakes would look so cool inbetween my actual plants :o
your mandrake botany kit idea would be cool with a UV lamp, getting avatar/skyrims blackreach vibes of photoluminescent plants if you used fluorescent paints on something, could make for something in an underground setting
Literally one of the most inspirational videos I've seen in years. You should have an online store / section of, where you sell these figures. Put the prices up and I guarantee they will sell. $80/$100 a piece + Thank you so much for this video and I'm really glad I found your channel.
Feeling like you need to have a message as an artists is probably normal but honestly... "I feel like I need to have a reason to make a thing, so balls to it I'm going to make a thing without a good reason" is a pretty good message all things considered.
just to affirm the idea of using and reinterpreting other people's ideas in the form of kitbashing, that sort of thing is very common in art, fine art is movement and change and building upon the work of the past, music too, changing and pushing out and finding things to explore in music, storytelling is the one I'm most familiar with, there are plenty of retellings of old stories that change and adapt them, and it doesn't make them less unique
i make video games and the concept of making a game out of other “parts” is a huuuuge part of game development. after all, lots of ideas have been tried. its all about finding those unique combinations, having them interact in interesting ways, bringing together the things you enjoy into one shape that is unique to you, and wearing those influences like a badge of honor. i think where a lot of games fail is that they dont have an identity, its more just recycled content that eventually becomes a formula. i think where your work shines is that theres a huge sense of identity, i could never mistake your work for someone elses and that not only makes you an artist, but a successful one
Your message? Since your first videos it's been obvious for me (and what drew me to your content)- freeing yourself of any misconceptions and unnecessary boundaries in the process of creating "stuff". Even in such a small artistic venture like following your steps in creating a ruined terrain (and using your great templates) I found a breath of creative freedom and real joy in my uncontrolled "happy accidents". For me your art is skillful and well thought out but most of all it's fun!
I think I understand what you mean. You want to make what you want, but want it to have value. I don't think having a piece mean something specific is a bad thing. Sometimes constraints can spawn even greater creativity. Limitations force you to think outside the box. But remember, even if a piece has no limitations or deep meaning, if it's something you wanted to create, it still holds the value of your mental peace and happiness.
In terms of “morals” I think there’s something to say about taking inspiration both physically and mentally of other pieces of art and creating something new/unique/different. There’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from things you love. For example, I love Tolkien and want to write my own book one day inspired by his style of writing.
I don't think it's actually possible to not take inspiration from other things. Consciously or not. And it doesn't matter, as long as you're making something, unless you are trying to replicate something else exactly, that's your own thing.
Sneaky lil bestiary entry at the end there for all your Arcane Ugly followers

Nothing is new under the sun, I think the ultimate attribute is taking things that already exists and putting a part of you in it to make something unique.
I think the message for an artist could simply just be the act of creation itself. That's what is so empowering about your work and videos, it inspires others to be creative too.
Of course you are an artist !!!
I love seeing you create stuff from nowhere, seeing the process of transformation. The different parts that should not be able to fit together but in the end create something awesome that could not NOT fit together (if you understand what I'm trying to say).
Awesome video as always.
maaan your editing skills are flawless bro.
also really love all of your your projects, never stop creating art if it makes you happy!
Your message? To enjoy what you do. It brings a smile to my face when you smile/laugh at what just created with your hands.
Bliss. You’re a fantastic motivational inspirational artist. Thanks for sharing a window into your mind.
Oh my gawd kitty helpin!
Your content is an endless source of inspiration of whats possible. Amazing stuff as always
I 💜 🐈⬛
My most favorite channel ever, I'm excited to see what else your gonna make!
Getting the texture off the back of that toy crocodile is inspired mate.
I hope this makes sense, idk what im doing any more
Just dropping a comment to say that of course you're an artist!
You could build a house out of lego bricks and build something ok or you could use actual bricks and with the time you save be able to invest the house with more of your creativity.
i seriously like your work and how you come across as a person. :) definitely an artist btw. keep up the cool work!
To me an artist is a person that makes something because they want to. Guess what?? You did that!
you ARE an artist and one of my favourites!
Thank you again and continue giving strength to that voice that you already have and it goes so far
Good vibes from Colombia
I see a lot of people here trying to find your justification for being an artist but I have always felt like artists are the only persons who can confidently answer the question "Why did you do/make it?" with "I donno, but it's cool, isn't it?" and the only honest answer to that one is "Yes".
as a random guy on the internet thank you for your videos. they got me to build a table for 40k and build things i never would have.
You’re like currently one of my favourite artist right now. If that helps with justifying it.
Deeply relatable thought process. Love it
Woah, i just found your channel through the monster mash I saw on Jazzas channel and damn i love this. And I'd love some to just decorate my room with. I love the idea of how they are like little eastereggs to be found in my livingroom and the mandrakes would look so cool inbetween my actual plants :o
yes. this. I love these flow of thoughts episodes of yours best. The fish monster is Ace-Pants.
I don't know why, but your videos make me feel cozy
your mandrake botany kit idea would be cool with a UV lamp, getting avatar/skyrims blackreach vibes of photoluminescent plants if you used fluorescent paints on something, could make for something in an underground setting
I'm pretty sure you're an artist. I really liked the mandrakes.
Literally one of the most inspirational videos I've seen in years.
You should have an online store / section of, where you sell these figures. Put the prices up and I guarantee they will sell. $80/$100 a piece +
Thank you so much for this video and I'm really glad I found your channel.
Feeling like you need to have a message as an artists is probably normal but honestly... "I feel like I need to have a reason to make a thing, so balls to it I'm going to make a thing without a good reason" is a pretty good message all things considered.
All art that anyone makes generally has a message even if it's unintended.
just to affirm the idea of using and reinterpreting other people's ideas in the form of kitbashing, that sort of thing is very common in art, fine art is movement and change and building upon the work of the past, music too, changing and pushing out and finding things to explore in music, storytelling is the one I'm most familiar with, there are plenty of retellings of old stories that change and adapt them, and it doesn't make them less unique
sick from work, was really happy to see you upload on my “day off”. keep rockin in the free world man, love your stuff.
great vid mr cast, loved it and watching you at work in your studio
Shit man I just started in the custom art toy thing and you're one of my biggest inspirations for kitbashing
You've kind of become an artistic inspiration for me. Keep up the good work
i make video games and the concept of making a game out of other “parts” is a huuuuge part of game development. after all, lots of ideas have been tried. its all about finding those unique combinations, having them interact in interesting ways, bringing together the things you enjoy into one shape that is unique to you, and wearing those influences like a badge of honor. i think where a lot of games fail is that they dont have an identity, its more just recycled content that eventually becomes a formula. i think where your work shines is that theres a huge sense of identity, i could never mistake your work for someone elses and that not only makes you an artist, but a successful one
You need to start giving yourself more credit. You're an artist and you should be really proud of what you've done and what you continue to do.
For me your art is skillful and well thought out but most of all it's fun!
black kitten new addition to the family? Where do they come from?!
FINALLY!!!!!!! Some good ol miscast
Kitbash and chill. I love it
My guy do what you want, it's all entertaining to me. Especially when I got food with me.
Sorry but I'm just here for Fae now 😻
"I don't know if I deserve to be an artist... I guess I need to try to find my voice." - sounds like something an artist would say
