This is an older unit with the moving mirror and laser diode. Modern units use a small camera and then analyze the captured image in software. They don't have the mechanical moving components anymore, just an LED light to illuminate the barcode. The camera units (called imagers) can also scan the 2D barcodes like QR codes, these older laser units cannot scan those.

I would fix these small coil wires with a drop of hot glue to make it more mechanical stable. Such devices will be dropped often.

I used to repair scanning equipment (Zebra) for my employer. Many of the issues with decoders happened from abuse. Dropping was a common cause of failure.
